Genius of Jaidev
=============

The twelfth gem in the series of ‘Genius of Jaidev’ is from a 1978 film ‘Tumhare Liye, based on the tale of lost love, sacrifice and reincarnation. Produced by Raj Tilak and directed by Basu Chaterjee, it had lyrics by Naqsh Layalpuri and music by Jaidev. The star cast included Ashok Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha, Neelam Mehra, Indrani Mukherjee, Anita Guha, Brahm Bharadwaj, Suresh Chatwal, A K Hangal, Dinesh Hingoo, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ratnamala, Zarina Wahab, Om Shivpuri etc. In spite of the mighty cast of that time, the film flopped at the box office and the excellent music of Jaidev went mostly unnoticed except of a Lata’s song ‘Tumhe dekhati hun to lagta hai’. Two songs from the film are already covered and discussed on this Blog.

This third song for the Blog is sung by Usha Mangeshkar, where she sounds as accomplished and sweet as Lataji herself. I, personally believe that this must be the best song she ever sang in her entire singing career. This is one more example of Jaidev utilizing lesser known singers whenever possible and get wonderful result. The song is picturised on Neelam Mehra and a ‘Sanyasi’ Sanjeev Kumar. The suggestive sexiness of the lyrics from the pen of Naqsh Layalpuri is worth listening to little attentively. The Indian classical instruments used in the song bare Jaidev’s unique trademark and is very sweet to the ears of music lovers. Please enjoy both the lyrics and music.

piya tore daras bina
more taras taras gaye naina aa
piya tore daras bina

mere sapnon ka piya

bane dulhan kabhi na koi raina aa
piya tore daras bina
more taras taras gaye naina
piya tore daras bina

Welcome Bharartbhai after a longish period. Thanks for the Usha beauty.

Usha was famous for her song in Inkaar-77 “Tu mungdaa…main gud ki dalli” by MD Rajesh Roshan and then next year her this song got attention. Like Bharatbhai has said, Jaidev recognized her potentiality and used her talent to prove her versatility. Another example is “Apne suron mein mere suron ko basa lo….” of Dil Ki Raahen-73 where Madan Mohan paired her with Manna Dey.

Enjoyed listening to both the songs after a long time. MD Mans Mukherjee’s had gone off my radar. He was Shaan’s father. Thanks for the recollection.
