It was 1958. A singing contest was organized in Bombay, sponsored by Murphy radios. The judges of the contest were the ‘दिग्गज‘ music directors of that era – Naushad, Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Vasant Desai and Madan Mohan. With a battery of such illustrious composers sitting in the jury, just be able to participate and perform in their presence, would have been a privilege. And for sure, the best talented aspirants had applied to be part of this contest. The singer that this impressive selection panel honored to be the best singer was a young man, originally from Amritsar, but settled in Bombay since childhood. The interesting thing about this young man was that he had been earlier rejected in auditions by All India Radio and Young India Ltd. (the gramophone records company). Along with being honored as the winner the verdict of this panel, Mahendra Kapoor got an opportunity immediately to sing for some of the music directors on the judge’s panel.

Remembering Mahendra Kapoor on the anniversary of his passing away (27th September).

The follow up was quick. Naushad gave him the prime song of the film ‘Sohni Mahiwaal’ (1958) – “Chaand Chhupa Aur Taare Doobe, Raat Gazab Ki Aayi”. The way Naushad Sb has designed the melody of this song, the crescendo is incrementally rising, just like the waters of the river Chenab in flood that Sohni is to cross, with the help of just an earthen pot. And Mahendra Kapoor delivered, an amazing performance – clean and clear singing at a pitch and octaves that not many singers would dare to attempt. Immediately following this came ‘Navrang’ (1959) and C Ramchandra got Mahendra to soften his pitch and croon out the lovely and delicate “Shyaamal Shyaamal Baran, Komal Komal Charan”, and then topped it with another soft number “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi”.

In the same year came ‘Dhool Ka Phool’, and Mahendra Kapoor delivered a marvelous rendering in the duets “Tere Pyaar Ka Aasra Chaahta Hoon”, and “Dhadhakne Lagey Dil Ke Taaron Ki Duniya” . Enough to establish him in the frontline of playback singing in Hindi films, these performance in 1958 and 1959 got him more than 50 films in which he sang before the 1950s ended.

The immense range of his voice has not been matched. One can say that his voice probably did not carry the delicacy and the elasticity of Rafi Sb or Manna Dey. But then it is difficult to imagine now another singer who could have sung “Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle Ugle Heere Moti”(‘Upkar’ 1967). His association with Ravi Sb and the films from BR Chopra’s production house, is well known. And not unexpectedly, there is still a number of gems that are hiding in the obscurity of B/C grade films that one has rarely heard of. In a career of almost five decades, his contribution to Hindi cinema is his playback voice in over 1500 songs.

The song I present today is from one such obscure film from 1967 – ‘Hamaare Gham Se Mat Khelo’. Mahendra Kapoor is in the blessed company of Jaidev. The lyrics are from the pen of Asraar – a name that I am not very familiar with. This lyricist is making a debut appearance on the blog today. The film was a B/C grade stunt film, produced and directed by Kunwar Shankar Singh Tomar, who incidentally, was also the hero in this film. Rest of the star cast includes Bharati, Sajjan, Muraad, Maruti, Tarun Bose, Mukri, Bela Bose, Nazir Hussain, Niranjan Sharma and others.

An emphatic rendering that one can expect from this voice. An obscure, but a very listen-able song, another memory from the radio days. Listen and enjoy.

Mahendra Kapoor once said that during the recording of NAVRANG’s Aadha Hai Chandrama with Ashaji, he was quite nervous. When the recording was over and they sat down to hear, they were horrified that only Ashaji’s lines were heard and Mahendra’s portion were off. Yani aadha gaana was recorded! Mahendraji became even more nervous. Then they discovered the flaw — a wire from Mahendra Kapoor’s mike was loose and hence his voice was not recorded. And then he sang with gusto, his nervousness gone, the result was a classic song!
Another thing. Mahendra Kapoor sang only one (one-third, actually) song for R K Films, Har dil jo pyaar karegaa (SANGAM), And Raj Kapoor was very appreciative of Shankar’s selection!

How come the recordist with the earphones in the glass cabin allowed the song to complete without MK.They should have called CUT. Bharatbhai can throw more light(or is it sound) on this rigmarole
