Wow, vintage Rafi, if ever it were.
As I was browsing for the song from 1975, I bumped into this very old friend, whom I had not met for a long time. But oh, what a lovely remembrance this one. A wonderful gem of a song, that is lost in obscurity, even though the film is comparatively not very old.

SHATRANJ KE KHILAADI(1977) was Satyajit Ray’s first Hindi feature film which he directed with multi star cast from India and abroad. The film was based on a short story by the same name written by Munshi Premchand which I had read during my school days. I watched this film once again and I must say that I enjoyed the movie much more than I had seen it about 3 decades back. The film was produced by Suresh Jindal under the banner of Devki Chitra. The main actors in the film were Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Shabana Azmi, Farida Jalal, Victor Bannerji, Richard Attenborough, Tom Alter, Barry John, Farooque Shaikh, David Abraham, Veena etc. Amitaab Bachchan was the narrator of the film.

Honest and reliable domestic help is a novelty and blessing in our times for someone like me who has interest in everything but household chores. As a young girl, I was for a time conscientious about house keeping. I was always rearranging the furniture and trying to change the decor and look of the house, with the limited scope for doing such things and no monetary expenditure. This fad lasted for a few years till I started working. Even now I sometimes feel an urge to change things in the house, to create new spaces within the limits of the small, spacious flat, which is normal and happens to every one.

Mathura ka peda, Mysore pak, Agra ka petha, Dharwad peda, Gokak karadant, Lonawala chikki etc. are famous sweets associated with certain towns and cities.
The city of Belgaum too is known for a very famous sweet called kunda. Its origin according to most sources dates back to about 64 years ago when a Rajasthani by name Gajanan Mithaiwale belonging to a Purohit family once over boiled milk which turned into a dark brown paste. Not willing to waste and throw it, (read “marwadi”) he experimented by mixing it with “khoa” which is essentially a milk paste used in most sweets and sugar to dilute. The resulting product was a sweet dish which tasted different and was quite delicious. Not knowing what to name his new discovery, he uttered “kunda”. Since then this product is being prepared by most of the sweet making families for commercial sale.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 7

This is turning out to be a very endearing and a very wonderful revisit to the songs that used to be ‘by heart’ in the school days and radio listening days. I have somewhere the notebooks stashed away, in which I and my sister used to pencil in these songs. Even Atul ji has acknowledged it. In a personal response in email, he mentioned that these are the songs that he had written in his notebook, next to cricket scores of important test matches. 🙂 These songs from the 1970s, generally introduced to our nascent minds and memories over the radio, are some of the dearest treasures ensconced in our hearts. In most cases, the familiarity was just with the song, without any details of films and other credits. That information would come later. First, it was simply the song that made its way inside and has simply been there since.
