VINTAGE NAUSHAD……Song No. – 8
————————————-

This is a song from film Station master-42. It was a Prakash pictures,Bombay presentation, jointly produced by Vijay and Shankar Bhatt. Director was Chimanlal Luhar or C M Luhar, about whom I have recently written on 6-1-2015, while writing on a song from Darshan-41. In this film, for 12 songs there were 4 lyricists, namely Pt. Indra ( 4 songs ),P L Santoshi( 5 songs ), Chaturvedi ( 1 ) and B R Sharma (2 ). The cast included Jagdish Sethi,Prem Adeeb, Ratnamala, Jeewan, Umakant,Kaushalya, Ameerbai,Pratima Devi etc. Story and screenplay was by Santoshi.

Today’s song is a Rail song, with Rhythm and a background music of train sounds. Train/Rail songs are quite popular in Hindi films. One of the most famous and memorable Rail songs is from film ‘Jawab’-1942-Duniya ye duniya toofaan mail-sung by Kanan Devi. Offhand, I do remember few more Rail songs like, C Ramchandra-Lata song-Dil ka ye engine seetiyaan maare -Ustad Pedro-59, Another C Ramchandra-Lata song,Jawaani ki rail chali jaaye re -Shehnai-47. Then there is Aao bachchon tumhe dikhaayen jhanki Hindustan ki-Jagriti-54 and some other songs like from film Aashirwad (Ashok kumar) ( rail gaadi rail gaadi ) and film Kitaab ( Dhanno ki aankhon mein raat ka surma ) etc. Our readers too can add to this list.

Indian film industry has always been alive to the happenings in the country and reflects the national problems and important events in our films. 1942 was an year when the II World War was on its peak and it had caused a severe food shortage in the world. Italy had made a silent film ‘Greed’ on this issue. Based on it, Mehboob Khan made a film , Roti’ in India. Mehboob was a socialist and a Nehruvian to the core and so his films like, Mother India or Son Of India were made on socialistic principles. In 1942,Ramchandra Thakur also directed one such film,’Gareeb’.

Lots of activities had taken place in 1942 in the film Industry. A young group of people split from Bombay Talkies and established their own ‘Filmistan ‘ studio.V. Shantaram left ,Prabhat’ with some trusted followers and started his own ‘Rajkamal kalamandir’. Mehboob left Desai(Sagar/National) camp and started his own’Mehboob’ studio. Abdul Rashid Kardar also started his own ‘Kardar productions’. Homi Wadia broke up from his brother in Wadia Movietone and started ‘Basant Pictures’. Calcutta’s New Theatres started showing signs of disintegration and Debki Bose, P C Barua etc left new Theatres. Debaki Bose made Apna Ghar’ in Bombay. K L Saigal left new Theatres to do films in Bombay . He did Ranjit’s Bhakta Surdas’ and ‘ Bhanwra’. He ofcourse went back to Calcutta to do a few more films, before coming back to Bombay for Shahjehan and Parwana. He did not/could not go back to Calcutta, as he died after Parwana-47.

From Lahore Dalsukh Pancholi repeated his magic with ‘ Khandaan’-42. This time it was Noorjehan who shook the industry with her songs under Ghulam Haider. Films like Bhakt Kabir,Bhakta Surdas, and Bharat Milap kept the Mythology/religious films in limelight. new Theatres, Prabhat,Bombay Talkies etc all brought out excellent films in 1942. Barring Bhakta Surdas,Roti and Khandan, there was not much competition to Naushad’s Station Master-42 in music. Its music became quite popular and the film celebrated Silver Jubilee. Naushad tasted success for the first time in his career in 1942 and two of his three films released this year celebrated Silver Jubilees.

The story of film Station Master was earlier given by me in 2012 and hence I am not repeating it here. The 12 songs of the film were all quite likeable and some of them, like today’s song, were very melodious. 7 songs from this movie have already been posted here in the past. This will be the 8th song of this film. It is sung by Rajkumari, Prem Adeeb and chorus (including Suraiyya’s voice). Let us enjoy this cute rail song from “Station Master”(1942).

Nice rail song! Used as I am to P L Santoshi-C Ramchandra, I found Santoshi-Naushad combination interesting. Any more songs by the two?
