“Jurmaana”(1979) was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee, Vinod Mehra, Farida Jalal, Shreeram Lagoo, Keshto Mukherjee, Yunus Parvez, Asrani, A K Hangal, Asit Sen, Moolchand, Minaxi, Rahul Dev, Raj Verma etc in it.

Hrishikesh Mukherji was known for making light hearted heart warming movies, but this movie was too slow and too heavy for my taste. The movie had boy meeting girl and the girl’s father taking exception and starts to mentally torture not only his daughter but movie watchers like me as well. Dr Shreeram Laagoo, playing Raakhee’s father spoiled all the fun of watching this movie for me. To this day, whenever I think of this movie, I am reminded to Dr Shreeram Laagoo’s face, and not with any great fondness either.

The songs of this movie were great but I was unable to like them for the above mentioned reason. It is only now that I have grudgingly started to enjoy the songs of this movie.

Most songs were sung by Lata and picturised on Raakhi as is expected in a melancholic movie like this. Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is another song from “Jurmaana”(1979). This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised as a get together song. From the picturisation, it is seen that Shreeram Laagoo and Raakhi are visited by Vinod Mehra and his father A K Hangal (another facepalm inducing actor of that era)- to look at the Ladki- if I remember correctly. And as it happens in Hindi movies under these circumstances, she is asked to sing a song.

In the song that she sings, full of similes containing words like baag, kali, maali, phoolwaala, which refer to household, herself, her father, and her lover respectively. The four minutes song apparently gets its message across and Dr Shreeraam Laagoo begins to see the errors of his ways. 🙂

And needless to mention that the song is also being listened to by Amitabh Bachchan, from a distance of some 50 metres, and apparently without any loss of signal either. 🙂

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

Song-Chhoti si ek kali khili thhi baag mein(Jurmaana)(1979) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

chhoti si ek kali khili thhi ee
chhoti si ek kali khili thhi ee
ek din baag mein
jyot jali thhi charaagon mein
phir kya hua koyi jaane na
jaane na
chhoti si ek kali khili thhi
ek din baag mein
jyot jali thhi charaagon mein
phir kya hua koyi jaane na
jaane na

use maali ne bade pyaar se paala
mast pawan ke jhoole mein daala
use maali ne bade pyaar se paala
mast pawan ke jhoole mein daala aa
aage kahoon
keh na sakoon
chup rahoon
reh na sakoon
phir kya hua koyi jaane na
jaane na
chhoti si ek kali khili thhi baag mein

aaya baag mein ek phool waala
jaane usne kya jaadu daala aa
aaya baag mein ek phool waala
jaane usne kya jaadu daala aa
phoolwaale ki jholi mein
toot ke gir padi kali
phir kya hua koyi jaane na
jaane na
chhoti si ek kali khili thhi baag mein

baag chhod ke
kehta thha koyi
maali ki yaad mein aen
kali bada royi re
baag chhod ke
kehta thha koyi
maali ki yaad mein aen
kali bada royi
kachcha dhaaga toot gaya
phoolwaala chhoot gaya
phir kya hua
koyi jaane na
jaane na
jaane na
jaane na

A.K.Hangal plays the role of Mama ji of Asrani, in whose house Rakhee takes shelter, after she was thrown out of her house by Sri ram lagoo.Amitabh(playing somewhat play boy/casanova type of role) plays betting game with his sober friend Vinod Mehra(man of virtues), that Amitabh bring this gharelu type of Rakhee to his bedroom and succeeds in his challenge by cheating/smooth talking to Rakhee.
But Sri ram lagoo(rakhee`s father)is baat ko lekar, apne beti se bahut gussa hote hain,
Rakhee leaves father`s huse and takes shelter at Asrani`s house (munh bole bhai of Rakhee) and pursues her singing career with a different name) In between Sri ram lagoo looses hi eyesight.

And Amitabh apne kiye par pachhtaane lagte hain aur Raakhi se maafi maangne Rakhee ko dhoondh nikaalte hain.but Rakhee unnse milna nahin chaahthi hai.

Aur Amitabh Sri ram lagoo ke treatment ko vinod Mehra ke through karwaate hain aur iss baat ka dhyaan rakhthe hain ke Sri ram lagoo aur rakhee ko iss baat ka pataa na chale ke ye sab Amitabh karwaa rahe hain.

Ye gaanaa movie ke climax ke thode pehle ka gaanaa hai, jo Sri raam lagoo sunthe hain, bina is baat ko jaanthe huye ke gaanewaali unnki hi beti hai.Rakhee bhi nahi jaanthi ke jo ghar mein unnke pita hai, woh ghar Amitabh ka hai aur ye bhi nahin jaanthi ke Rakhee ke gaane ko Amitabh paas hi rehke sunn rahe hain.

An interesting part is that in this movie Amitabh plays a grey shade character and at last he gets Rakhee`s hand, eventhough Vinod does have a soft corner for Raakhee

and in another Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie Bemisaal(1982)
(which got same starcast->Amitabh,Rakhee,Vinod Mehra/Rahul Dev Burman)
Vinod Mehra plays a corrupt doctor`s role(Amitabh saves Vinod by taking the vinod`s illegal operation charges on himself and goes behind bars) and he plays the role of Rakhee`s husband & Amitabh`s role got soft corner for Rakhee in Bemisaal
