Fabulous Foot Tappers – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The write up on this music director by AK ji (see here) opens with the lead in comment, that “. . . his music towers over his films”.  I am whole heartedly in agreement with this comment.  As he goes on to say that just “. . . one song of his – “Paas Baitho Tabiyat Bahal Jaayegi” (‘Punarmilan’, 1964) sung by Rafi Sb is enough to give him immortality.”  And then one reviews the list of films with him as the music director – ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’ (1961), ‘Punar Milan’ (1964), ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ (1965), ‘Chale Hain Sasural’ (1966), ‘Suhsila’ (1966) aka ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ (1977), and then of course the iconic ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (1975) – the film that gave its run for the money, in a stiff competition to the big time grosser of the same year (viz. ‘Sholay’), and still continues to be on the list top grossing films of all time.  About two decades of active work in the industry, with just sixteen films listed against his name.  But then, as AK ji says, it is just one song that confers immortality on him.

Remembering music director C Arjun on the anniversary of his passing away today (30 April).

A brief bio-sketch taken from Ak ji’s article.

Originally a Sindhi, he was born on September 1, 1933.  After partition his family settled in Baroda. He inherited his musical talent from his father who was a singer. He became assistant to another Sindhi music director Bulo C Rani. He started his career with composing for a Sindhi film Abana. His first Hindi film was Road no 303 (1960). Off and on he got films under nondescript banners with B/C grade cast. That he created memorable music nevertheless did not do much to change his fortunes. His teaming with the lyricist Jaan Nisar Akhtar would rank at par with the best of Sahir Ludhianvi’s composed by SD Burman or Roshan. He also composed a number of non film songs. He died at a relatively young age of 59 of heart attack he suffered at a recording studio. (Biographical information based on Pankaj Raag’s ‘Dhunon Ki Yatra’).

And now coming to the introduction of this new series.  I can almost see some of you raising your eyebrows probably in disapproval.  This guy, he simply keeps on starting newer series, and does not care to close his earlier series. 🙂  Well you see, the problem is that as I continue to sort and arrange my collection, I continue to see so many patterns and connections that ideas for new series continue to jam my mind.  I restrain myself from doing too many at the same time, but then it seems improper to hold back also. And then, with all other things happening, including the milestone and anniversary posts, things start getting spaced out.  But fear not, I have a track of all the work in progress and all the series will be concluded within good time. 😉

About this specific series title – there is a good number of very excellent foot tapping and entertaining dance numbers that we are all familiar with.  But there is still a number of them waiting outside the blog’s door, waiting for an entrance.  The numbers that I have listed for this series are really great favorites.  On listening, I am sure you will agree.  These numbers are such that you hear them once, and then you will want to hear them again and again.

This composition is by C Arjun.  The film is from 1961 – “Main Aur Mera Bhai”.  The film’s leading actors are Ajit and Ameeta, and the rest of the star cast includes Mehmood, Nadira, Lalita Pawar, Mukri, Helen, Leela Mishra, Niranjan Sharma, Tuntun, Samson, Maqbool, Jagdish Raj, Raj Diwan, and Nazeer Hussain.  Produced under the banner of Mahesh Pcitures, it is directed by Dharam Kumar.  Six songs of this film are all written by Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, with music by C Arjun.  And gosh what a collection of wonderful, albeit forgotten songs – “Ho Gori Zulm Kare Zulf Ka Bikhar Jaana”, “Main Abhi Gair Hoon Mujhko Abhi Apna Na Kaho”, “Aaye Ho To Jaane Ka Bahaana Na Milega” and more.  These three listed songs are already showcased here.  This is the fourth song to be posted.  And I believe the other two will also follow in short order – “Bheeghi Bheeghi Hawaa Shokh Dhaara”, a duet in the voices of Manna Dey and Asha Bhosle, and the philosophical song in the voice of Rafi Sb – “Insaan Kitne Yug Beete Yun Hi Rahaa Nadaan”.

The diamond amongst them is the song being presented today.  I am sure you will wonder, how come this song is not better known.  Why does it not appear in the selections of peppy numbers of Asha Bhosle.  The sound tells that this is most likely a song performed in a club or a restaurant bar, and with Helen’s name appearing in the casting, my intuition says that she is the one who has performed this dance song on screen.  I request other readers and friends to please add more information about this song and also about the film.

PS Here is the synopsis of the film, as had been posted by our dear Arun ji, in one of the earlier songs of this film.

MAIN AUR MERA BHAI (1961) is a murder mystery involving look alike twin brothers. The film produced under the banner of Mahesh Pictures, Bombay, is directed by Dharam Kumar. Dharam Kumar is a known name as a director of B grade films. He has directed about 12 films, some of which are ‘Road No. 303’ (1960), ‘Captain Sheroo’ (1963), ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ (1965) etc.

Lala Jagat Narayan, (Nazir Hussain) is a High Court judge, who has twin sons, Ramesh and Rajesh (double role played by Ajit). Only their mother can tell them apart. Both boys, when young fall in love with the same lady Asha (Ameeta) daughter of a retired officer Mishra ji (Niranjan Sharma). Asha gets engaged to Ramesh, who is a straight person. Rajesh, who is the notorious one, gets dejected and falls into bad company and bad ways. Shabnam (Nadira) befriends him and influences him to become a smuggler of gold. He becomes very rich, but is finally caught by the police and is sent to jail. On hearing this news, his father dies of shock.

Even after release from jail, Rajesh does not mend his ways. There is a fight between the brothers and when the mother (Leela Mishra) tries to intervene and mediate, she falls and loses her eyesight. Rajesh murders a rich businessman from Delhi and Ramesh, who is incidentally in the same hotel for a meeting, is arrested by the police and taken to court. Taking advantage of this situation, Rajesh comes home as Ramesh, and even Asha does not suspect him. Subsequently Rajesh also murders Shabnam.

The police have a continuing doubt about the true identity of the culprit. In the meantime, Asha is taking care of her mother-in-law and getting her treated for her eye problem. With treatment and Asha’s care, the mother regains her eyesight. Once this happens, she correctly identifies Rajesh who is masquerading as Ramesh. Rajesh is arrested. The mother testifies in the court against Rajesh and he is finally convicted. Ramesh and Asha are reunited.

A racy and a peppy number, that I am sure you will treasure.  Listen and enjoy.

👌Hey it is indeed a nice and foot tapping number. I am sure even asha bhonsle wud ve forgotten that there is this number in her portfolio😀
But sudhirji I think u missed on the colour coding for the chorus.
And I agree that this has only to b a Helen dance

Dear Sudhir ji,
Thanks a lot for this very peppy number.
Undoubtedly, C. Arjun did not get his just dues from the film industry for the excellent music he continued to set throughout his life.
Speaking for myself, I associate his name with the wonderful music composition in “Sushila”, especially, the two numbers – ‘Gham Ki Andheri Raat Mein’, which is a rare duet combination of Rafi-Talat and the unparalelled ‘Bemurawwat Bewafa Begaan-ai-dil Aap Hain’ soulfully rendered by Mubarak Begum.
