Waqt ki Deewar (1981) starred today’s birthday girl Sulakshana Pandit and birthday boy Sanjeev Kumar as the romantic pair. The other pair being Jeetendra with Neetu Singh (yesterday’s birthday gal). The supporting cast included Pran-Kadar Khan- Amjad Khan-Satyen Kappu-Preeti Ganguly-Paintal etc. {What a support system} The movie was directed by Ravi Tandon; T C Dewan was the producer, Laxmi Pyare were the music directors and Anjaan the lyricist. The movie was a typical run-of-the mill LOST AND FOUND drama where the heroes Munna and Vikram get separated after their mother’s death. One of them becomes a conman the other is looked after by Pran and becomes a police inspector (how original). Through the movie their paths keep crossing but they are unaware of each other’s identity till the last half an hour of the movie. Poor chaps!! But the movie makes us sit through close to two and half hours by which time Pran dies in making the two understand that they are brothers, the brothers find their father (Kader Khan) and their love interests. All izz well in the end.

Today’s song is a party song sung at the wedding of Paintal to Preeti Ganguly where our lead actors are the friends of the bride and the groom respectively. In the middle of the song they start fantasizing about their own wedding. 🙂 Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle sing the song.

Sulakshana Pandit our today’s birthday girl born in a musical family is the niece of Pt. Jasraj, sister of music director duo Jatin-Lalit and actress singer Vijayta Pandit. She had a fairly successful career in Bollywood and has acted with almost all the top actors of the 70s and 80s. she has also some very popular songs to her name, songs that have stood the test of time. Viz: “Beqaraar dil tu gaaye ja”; “Bandhi re kahe preet piya ke sang anjaane mein” and lots more. Today she turns 58.

And what does one say about our birthday boy? Noted actor who has won many major award including two national awards. Extremely talented. Very good at comedy. As well as emotional roles. Born in Mumbai to a Gujarati Hindu family, started acting as a stage actor. Made his film debut in 1960s. In the beginning he has had the likes of Dilip Kumar as his co actor. Am at a loss as to decide which of his movies I loved the most— Angoor; Sholay; Trishul; Seeta Aur Geeta (my god one is lost among the choices). He would have been 77 today.

Lyrics

(lots of goan words in the start)

Man chaahi ladki
Man chaahi ladki
Man chaahi ladki
kahin koi mil jaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
man chaaha ladka
man chaaha ladka
man chaaha ladka
kahin koi mil jaaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai

man chaahi ladki
man chaaha ladka
man chaahi ladki
kahin koi mil jaaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai

dekhi hai
maine bhi dekhi hai
khwaabon khyaalon mein koi pari si ee
aanchal mein
chehra chupaaye wo
tasweer jaise ho sharm o haya ki
haye kasam se lut gaya main to
mit gaya main to
pehli nazar mein
kahin koi mil jaaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai

lalalalala
lalalalaala
lalalalaala
lalalalalala

maine bhi ik din toh dekha thha
koi anaadi sa budhu diwaana aa aa
maine bhi ik din toh dekha tha
koi anaadi sa budhu deewaana
jaadu tha
kya uski aankhon mein
haan uski baaton mein maine na jaana
haaye kasam se lut gayi main bhi
mit gayi main bhi
pahli najar mein
kahin koi mil jaaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai

raaton ki
bechain baahon mein
chupchaap
jalta hai
ye dil deewaana aa aa
diwaani shama bhi jalti hai
ye raaz jaane na
pagal parwaana aa

haye kasam se dil me hai jo
aayegi woh
kab mere ghar me
kahin koi mil jaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
man chaahi ladki
manchaha ladka
manchaahi ladki kahin koi mil jaaye
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai
apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai

apna bhi is saal
shaadi ka iraada hai

In fact in real life they wanted to marry magar shaadi nahi hui. Same with Hema etc. No father would give their daughter to a boozard.
Sanjeev Kumar(Haribhai Jethalal Jariwala) was a Disawal Hindu NOT Jain(wikipedia is wrong). This was confirmed by Harishbhai Raghuvanshi who is going to reconfirm later in the day. Further he said he was born in Mumbai and not in Surat as is the popular belief.

Harishbhai confirms that Sanjeev Kumar is Kanabi(pronounced as kannabi) Patel, a Hindu. He has checked with couple of friends including Krishnakant the character actor of yore who is in his nineties short of hearing. Thanks Harishbhai for the right info.
