Today’s song is a Manna Dey NFS.

We have just completed 2 years without the Ace Singer, Manna Dey. He left us on 24-10-2013. He was probably the last of the Golden Age male singers, who started singing in the 40s. I called him an Ace singer and most readers would agree with it too, but Manna Dey never got rated as the No 1, or 2 or 3 or even 4th singer. Every A grade composer agreed that he was a great singer, but no one would call him to sing a song, on a regular basis. Though Manna Dey sang for almost every composer of his times, he was neither a favourite of any Music Director, nor did any top actor insist for him as a playback singer of his choice. So, strangely, while recognition was there, results were not matching !

He started his career as an assistant to Khemchand Prakash ( after assisting K C Dey- his uncle). He also worked under Anil Biswas and S D Burman. One day Vijay Bhatt, the owner of Prakash Pictures, heard his song and strongly recommended his name to Shankar Rao Vyas for songs in the film ‘Ramrajya-1943’. Manna Dey sang three songs for the film and they became popular. But he got stuck singing only for Religious and Mythological films. From 1943 to 1950, he sang 50 songs in 28 Religious films.

Those days S D Burman was composing a song for K C Dey for his film Mashal-50. When the song was ready, K C Dey had gone back to Calcutta and was not likely to come back. K C Dey,however asked SDBurman to give that song to Manna Dey and assured that full justice to the song will be done by him. Most reluctantly, S D Burman called Manna Dey for rehearsal. When Dada heard him sing that song, he was more than pleased. The song “Upar gagan vishal”” took Manna Dey’s fame to the skies. It also made Manna Dey settle for becoming a playback singer instead of a composer, which he was trying till then.

In the initial stage, he sang mainly for Anil Biswas, Shankarrao Vyas, Shyamsunder, Khemchand Prakash, Bulo c Rani and S D Burman. Because of his Bhajans and classical singing, he was branded as a Bhajan singer. Later he sang comedy songs for Agha, Mehmood etc. In those days, difficult songs rejected by Rafi, Kishore, Talat and Mukesh used to finally come to him. This was because he was adept in singing sanskritised lyrics, difficult ragas and songs in high pitch. He had a solid voice. Unfortunately, in those days leading female singers like Raajkumari, Zohrabai, Khurshid,Amirbai, Meena Kapoor,Shamshad begum, Noorjehan and Suraiya used to refuse to sing duets with him, fearing that their voice would not be heard with his solid voice. however Lata and Asha never never any problems with him.

Some of the classical based songs of Manna Dey are under the music direction of Anil Biswas(Hamdard), Salil Chaudhari(Pariwar), C Ramchandra(Navrang), Roshan(Dil hi to hai), Sajjad Hussain(Rustom Sohrab), S D Burman(Baat ek raat ki), R D Burman(Padosan), Kalyanji-Anandji(Zanjeer) and Dattaram(Parvarish).

Composers remembered Manna Dey’s name for Qawwalis. After just three songs with Manna Dey in 10 years, Naushad called him for Palki (Main idhar jaun ya udhar jaun), S D Burman in Chhupa Rustom and Roshan in many films like Barsat ki Raat, Tajmahal, Babar, Dil hi to hai etc.

Funniest but sad part was Manna Dey’s voice did not suit any Top actor, however for character actors it would be perfect, like Omprakash in Budha Mil Gaya or Anwar Hussain in Baharon ke sapne or W M Khan in Kabuliwala etc.

Manna Dey was terribly upset while singing for the famous Padosan song. He questioned R D Burman, what did Kishore know about Classical singing and why should he get defeated by him. It is said that Manna Dey gave quite a lot of trouble while recording this song.

The only Composer who did justice to him and his capability was the Shankar-Jaikishen pair. They used Manna Dey, next to Mukesh, for Raj Kapoor and succeeded. Under their baton, Manna Dey sang many popular evergreen songs in films like Seema, Chori Chori, Shri 420 etc. Manna Dey sang Bhajans, Love songs, Romantic Songs, Folk songs, Sad songs, Classicaal songs etc with Shankar Jaikishan. This team successfully used his voice for Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Rehman, Sunil Dutt, Balraj Sahni, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Bharat Bhushan etc. Manna Dey faced resistance from many producers for taking him, but strong composers like Shankar Jaikishan (chori chori and Ujala) stood up in his support and Manna Dey always gratefully acknowledged this support.

Manna Dey sang more that 3500 songs in 16 languages. he sang 1408 Hindi Film Songs and 129 Hindi NFS. Today’s song is -according to the uploader- written by Chandrashekhar Pandey and the Music Director is V.Balsara. However, the official site of Manna Dey describes the Lyricist as Pulok Bandopadhyaya and Music Director as Noyan Muzumdar. The year of the song is shown as 1953.

My guess is that this must be an original Bangla Geet, recorded in 1953 and later it might have been revived in 1978 by V.Balsara,y getting Hindi Lyrics by Chandrashekhar Pandey. Whatever is the reality, the fact is that it is a wonderful song. This tune was used by N Dutta for the film ‘Light House’-58 in the song “Kis jagah jaayen” by Asha Bhonsle. Enjoy this wonderful NFS by the Ace Singer Manna Dey.

In my view, Manna Dey’s voice is better suited on Raj Kapoor than the voice of Mukesh. Probably those days, film distributors and the producers of the films in turn preferred Mukesh over Manna Dey.

I have 78 RPM record of this song (No. N.88091) and confirm that the lyricist of this song is Chandrashekhar Pandey. The flip side of this record has ‘Nazaaron mein ho tum’ also sung by Manna Dey. I have heard this song quite often on Vividh Bharati in the 60s. So I feel that the record must have been issued sometime early 1960s and not in 1978.

In Chori Chori SJ had to do lot of convincing to AVM Bros for taking Manna Dey before they gave in. The results are there are for everybody.

The famous Le Le Dard Paraaya, Kar De Dur Gham Ka Saaya was by Chandrashekhar Pandey, Hemant Kumar Madan Mohan in Chhote Babu (1957)

V Balsara
Qurbani (1952)
Talaash (1952)
Madmast (1953)
Chaar Dost (1956)
Pyar (1969)
Wohi Ladki (1967)
Jai Baba Baidyanath (1979)

Arun Ji,
Nice write up ( as always, from you) on my favourite Manna Dey.
Arguably, I would place him on par with Mohd Rafi, but certainly above all other contemporaries of his time. I had the privilege of meeting him few times while I lived in Juhu scheme,,Mumbai. not far from his house. He often expressed his gratitude to Shankar Jaikishan, (while talking to me and my friend.)
( in a lighter vein) Manna dey had every reason to be unhappy at the prospects of getting defeated by Kishore Kumar ( in chatura nar..), especially after he defeated Pt Bhimsen Joshi ( in ketaki Gulab phool)!!
He won his only(?) filmfare award for SJ song ( Ay bhai zara Dekhke chalo), though when SJ played out the song initially, he felt it was a prose.!! He would have certainly liked to win it for a more profound song. ( like poocho na kaise, Kaun Aya mere mana ke dware., Sur na saje, bhay Bhanjana…).

Thanks

As usual Arunji at his best. Contrary to what people feel, I have a different view. Manna Dey did sing so many songs, isn’t it? For songs with a classical base, he was the only choice. So commenting that KK and Rafi were more popular than Dey is balder dash. Manna Dey had his own space where he got opportunities to sing. Otherwise how he could have sung so many songs? His autobiography is available on Internet, happened to read it. As Raj Kapoor was closer to Mukesh, the latter became Raj Kapoor’s official voice. He hated singing with KK. KK was a crazy singer & Manna was more a serious character. That he did not get awards for his best songs is not a great deal. These awards were bought. The best award is that his songs are popular till now – after so many years. Manna Dey and Mahendra Kapoor were talented singers who sang many songs though they were not as prolific as KK or Rafi. While Dey could sing Rafi’s and KK’s songs, can KK sing Dey’s songs?
