The system of borrowed voice (i.e., playback singing) for actors started sometime in 1934 and playback singing was firmly in place in the Hindi film industry by the end of 1940. However, in the 40s, there were some prominent actor-singers Like K L Saigal, Noor Jahan, Suraiya, Shanta Apte, Kanan Devi etc. who continued to sing for themselves. Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Talat Mehmood, Sulkashana Pandit etc who started as playback singers also sang for themselves whenever they acted in some films. GM Durrani who started his filmy career as an actor in the 30s switched over to playback singing and he became one of the most sought after male playback singer in 1940s. All these actor-singers/singer-actors had good voices and therefore one would normally expect them to sing for themselves while acting in films. However, there are cases where a few of such artists had to borrow voices of other playback singers.

The first name that comes to my mind is that of Kishore Kumar. He had the distinction of borrowing voices of the maximum playback singers – Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, S D Batish, Amanat Ali and even Asha Bhosle. I find that there were 17 songs in which Kishore Kumar lip synced in the voices of other playback singer as per our blog. The reasons could be that the story situations and the genre of the songs demanded the borrowed voices. Also, he may have refused to record the songs in his own voice due to some issues with producers/directors/music directors which made the music directors to rely on voices of other playback singers for him.

G M Durrani, one of the most successful playback singers of the 40s, had to face stiff competition from Mohammed Rafi in the 50s and thereafter. Interestingly, Mohammed Rafi regarded him as his idol in playback singing. How did Durrani take it when he had to lip sync in the voice of Mohammed Rafi for the song unke khayaal aaye to aate chale gaye in ‘Laal Patthar’ (1971), is anybody’s guess. The reason could be that the distributor probably wanted a popular playback singer while Durrani, by that time, was a spent force. One can vouch for that fact that Durrani’s voice in 1971 was as good as in the 40s and 50s if one goes by the way he sang a song ‘neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare’ for the TV programme ‘Mortal Men Immortal Melodies in 1982.

Then, there is a case of actor-singer Sulakshana Pandit. Despite her good voice, she had to lip sync in Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle’s voices. For example, in a song ‘man chaahi ladki kahin koi mil jaaye’ from the film ‘Waqt Ki Deewar’ (1981), Asha Bhosle sang for her. Considering the situation for the picturisation of the song, probably, it was music director’s call to use Asha Bhosle’s voice. But what about mujhe pyaar mein khat kisi ne likha hai from ‘Hera Pheri’ (1976). I can not visualise the reason as to why Sulakshana Pandit could not have sung this song on herself. There may be some more such instances for Sulakshana Pandit in her actng career.

It was a surprise for me, when I came to know just a few days back that Amirbai Karnataki, the Kannada Kokila as she was known in Karnataka, had faced a situation when she was required to lip sync in Sudha Malhotra’s voice for the song ‘kahaan nahi Ram hai’ from the film PAWAN PUTRA HANUMAN (1957). The song is written by Saraswati Kumar Deepak and is set to music by Chitragupta. Apart from Amirbai Karnataki, the other actor in the role of Hanuman is S N Tripathi. Incidentally, Chitragupta assisted S N Tripathi before he got independent assignment as music director in 1946.

I have no idea why music director Chitragupta did not use Amirbai Karnataki’s voice for this song when she had sung quite a few songs of this genre in the past. This is not to undermine the voice of Sudha Malhotra who has rendered this song beautifully.

wo chaahe to path bhoole ko

Sadanand ji,

The system of Playback singing was started from the song in film
Dhoopchhaon -35,by MDs R C Boral and Pankaj Mullik, in Calcutta.

The first Playback in Bombay was in film “Mahageet”-37, in which Anil Biswas sang for his Mentor Hiren Bose acting as a Fakir in the film.

Although there were claims for Playback from earlier films, they were not as per the definition of Playback, namely ” Pre-recorded musical soundtrack mimed to by an actor ”

Arun ji,
Thanks for pointing out the mistake and for additional information. I was under the impression that ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ was released in 1934.

Can I please be educated about those 17 songs wherein Kishore Kumar has lip synced for other singers including Asha Bhosle.
