Today’s song for discussion is a special song from film Saaqi-1952. It is sung by Shamshad Begum, under the baton of Music Director C.Ramchandra.

This song is special because it is a very rare song. The song was not available anywhere on You Tube or other sites on Internet. I did not / could not find this song even on Dr. Surjit Singh ji’s site – which is a treasure house of many old and obscure songs. Even otherwise, in absence of a search vehicle on this site, it is extremely difficult to find a desired song in this ocean of songs. It really requires a Herculean effort.

The only way out was to find out if any collector of songs or records has this song and then I decided to contact my collector friend shri Deepak ji Chowdhari from Paratwada. No wonder, I got this song from Deepak ji. He has been kind to me many times in the past also.

I first met Deepak ji on the 20th of December 2015, when he visited my house in Mumbai. Earlier for few months, we were in contact of each others through mails and phone. Deepak ji is a very genial, humble, good natured and helpful person who has absolutely no airs and is quite unassuming. Though he hails from a very rich aristocratic family from a small place like Paratwada ( a twin city of Achalpur Railway station) in Amravati district, he is very friendly and modest. He was earlier in Pharma Distribution business, but now he is a full time collector of Hindi film songs etc. As per information given by him, he seems to be having an amazing collection of over 6000 records of 78 RPM, over 1500 LPs/EPs/Tapes, more than 1300 old films, over 500 books in English, Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati, in addition to over 5000 photographs of actors, films etc plus many other filmy sundries, memorabilia etc etc. I was also stunned with Deepak ji’s knowledge of songs.

These days, due to my writings, I have come in contact with quite a few collectors. Some of them have become my friends also. I have met some of them at my house. Some collectors specialise in particular categories, like for example Shri Suman Chaurasia ji from M.P., specialises in Lata Mangeshkar songs and runs a Museum for this. I know one collector who specialises in Noorjehan songs-Indian and as well Pakistani.

Some collectors like shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji are so large hearted that he has opened up his collection for all lovers of Hindi film music. Dr. Surjit Singh ji’s site is a place where many collectors have generously contributed rare and old songs that are freely accessible to music lovers all over the world. However, there are few…luckily very few…collectors who are very secretive and possessive about their collection and do not give access to it to anyone else at any cost. I shudder with the thought as to what will happen to their collections after them !

Today’s song is composed by C.Ramchandra. I never hide the fact that I am a great fan of C Ramchandra’s music. At the same time, I am not a blind fan. During the peak period of his career from 1949 to 1958 he and Lata spun music magic. However one should not forget ( I do not ) that the same was the peak period of Shanker- Jaikishen also and Shankar Jaikishan did more songs of Lata in more number of films than C Ramchandra. In this period, C.Ramchandra benefited by his association with Lata, while Lata benefited by her association with Shankar Jaikishan that enabled her to solidify her No. 1 position!

C Ramchandra used Lata in a total of 298 songs ( 196 solos) in 63 films; whereas Shankar Jaikishan used Lata in a total of 453 songs (313 solos) from 124 films.

One aspect of C Ramchnadra’s music that I like most is that he used to sing songs himself in many films. From 1946 onwards most of his songs sung by himself became very popular. Though he sang mainly in his own films, he has sung for a few other composers also. He sang for Anil Biswas in Jwar Bhata-44, Veena-48 and Girls school-49, for Chick Chocolate in Naadaan-51, for Vasant Pawar in Mahatma-53, for S D Burman in Eight Days-46 and Chalis Baba ek chor-54, for Meer Saheb in Laal Haveli-44, for Ramakant in Babuji-50, for Husnlal Bhagatram in Apni Chhaya-50, for Roshan in Baaraati-54, for Hemant Kumar in Samrat-54and Lagan-55, for Usha Khanna inFaisla-65, and for Laxmikant-Pyarelal in Chhaila Babu-67.

In the film Saqi-52 – which had 9 songs – he had used 6 singers, viz. Lata, Talat, Rafi,Chitalkar, Geeta nad Shamshad Begum. This was quite surprising considering that C Ramchandra, by 1952 was completely under the influence of Lata and majority of his songs were in her voice. As such Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum rarely sang for him once Lata came on the scene and probably this film was last where Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begam sang for C Ramchandra.

The song itself is very melodious and it has a catchy tune. I feel you too will like it. With this song, “Saaqi”(1952) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
