Most music lovers have heard thousands of songs. Many of these songs may have memories associated with them. These memories could be of different types and they differ from person to person for the same song.

One memory associated with the songs could be the day when we listened to a song for the first time and the situation when we heard that song.

I recall that I heard the song “Mere saamne waali khidki mein ek chaand ka tukda rehta hai” (Padosan) for the first time in one evening in late 1960s on radio. I was not even aware of the singer, but I loved the song and I began to sway on it. My Mama (mother’s brother) who had switched on the radio commented that Atul had loved Kishore Kumar’s voice. That is how I came to know that the name of the singer was Kishore Kumar. And I became a fan of Kishore Kumar then and there itself.

There may not be too many songs where I recollection about the date and time of their first listening is this vivid though. “Saaranga teri yaad mein” (Saaranga) is one song that I recall listening for the first time during the summers of 1974 in the evening on Vividh Bharati, Ranchi station. “Chaand si mehbooba ho meri kab maise aisa socha thha” is a song that I heard for the first time in a “Vishesh Jaimala” programme presented by Sunil Gavaskar in 1975, dedicating this song to his newly wedded wife Marshneil. He also played another song ‘itni jaldi kya hai saajan gori ke ghar jaane ki” (another song heard by me for the first time) commenting that this is a song that is bound to make Kallicharan stand up and dance. Kallicharan was a leading West Indian batsman of Indian origin at that time who had visited India with the West Indies team in 1974-75.

I recall that I heard “tasveer banaata hoon tasweer nahin banti” for the first time during the same era. That is the first time when I became aware of the singer (Talat Mehmood), the lyricist (Khumar Barabankwi), Music director (Naashaad) as well as the movie (Baradari).

I may have heard thousands of songs for the first time subsequently. In fact, I have heard thousands of songs for the first time since this blog was begun. And I continue to discover “new” songs on a regular basis.

I came across this lovely song from “Madam XYZ”(1959) just now at about 7 PM today (29 march 2016). It reminded me of the time four decades ago when I had heard the “Saaranga”(1961) title song for the first time. I had heard that song on “Vividh Bahrati”, whereas I discovered this song from “Madam XYZ”(1959) on YT.

I find that evenings are the best time to listen to a song for the first time, when you have just come back home from office and you are in a mood to unwind. One’s mind is most receptive to music at that time and may be that is why people (at least I) may have heard (and liked) many songs for the first time in the evenings. Though I must admit that listening to such songs on radio four decades ago was an experience that cannot be matched.

So here is this lovely song from “Madam XYZ”(1959). This song is sung by Lata. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

“Madam XYZ” (1959) was a Neo Lite Films production. It was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The movie had Bhagwan, Suresh, Shakila, Nalini Chonker, Shammi, Sudesh, Purnima, Kumar, Manju, David Abraham, Pran etc in it.

Only the audio of this song is available. going by the cast, it appears that the song was picturised on Shakila. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai (Madam XYZ)(1959) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics

kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani
kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani
milte hi ye nigaahen
main to hone lagi deewaani
kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani

tu hi bata dil se mere
kaisi sada ye aayi
tu hi bata dil se mere
kaisi sada ye aayi
sapne mere armaan mere
lene lage angdaai
kabhi jhumoon main
kabhi gaaun main
huyi apne se bhi begaani
kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani
kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani

jalne lage man mein diye
dekhin niraali raahen
jalne lage man mein diye
dekhin niraali raahen
jaane kahaan raahen nayi
mujhko piya le jaayen
kaisa jaadu hai
kaisi masti hai
ho na jaaye koi naadaani
kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani
milte hi ye nigaahen
main to hone lagi deewaani
kuchh meri nazar madhosh hai
kuchh teri nazar mastaani

Typically Chitragupt; lilting and lovely.

This film was enjoyed by me, when it was released at Swastik Cinema of Mumbai. I don’t remember it now much but Shakila, Nalini Chonkar & Poornima played the roles of 3 Madams, namely X, Y & Z. Suresh, Sudesh were 3 heroes. I don’t remember 3rd hero. It was second film of Sudesh. I think ‘Paak Daaman’ was his first. Suresh was much senior to him, but this was the first film, I saw of him! later followed by ‘Satta Bazaar’.
Where can I see this film again?
