Today’s song for discussion is from a film which is actually…according to some people…”out of Syllabus” for me. The film is Andaz Apna Apna – 1994 and the lovely duet is sung by Vicky Mehta and Behroze Chatterjee.

Those readers who have branded me or know me as a writer on old films from the 1930s to the 1960s, will be shocked to find me opting for a song from a comparatively “Taboo” period of the 1990s. Perhaps not many people know that earlier also I have discussed songs from films of the 1970s, like Parinay-74, or from the 1980s like Mr. India-87 or Tarzan and the Cobra-87, or from the 1990s like House No. 13 – 93, or of the 2000s ike Zubeida-2001, or even the 2010s like Love in Bombay-2013.

I am not allergic to music after the 70s. As I always say “Not all the music after 70 is bad as much as Not all the music before 70 is good.” Only thing is that after 1970 Melody became a scarce commodity- for various reasons, but mainly due to excessive number of films being produced. Here I feel that quantity was at the cost of quality. Earlier one would not find bad songs easily, nowadays good songs are not found easily.

Now what is good and what is bad ? One may say that the tastes and styles have changed. The only test of Good or Bad, in my humble opinion, would be the Memorability of the song. Today’s songs reflect today’s philosophy of “use and throw”. Servicing and Repairing are outdated terms now ! Take a song like “choli ke peechhe”( Khalnayak-1993), for example. Such songs are popular for 3 to 6 months and they are then forgotten, because newer songs come. Today how many people hum this song ? Do you hear it on Radio or see it on TV ? Does anyone sway with that song anymore now ?. On the other hand songs like ” Aayega aanewala “or “awaaz de kahaan hai tu ” can still bring the same thrill and enjoyment even now. The haunting tunes linger on for an infinite time. This is the real test of a good song…everlasting timeless Melody ! That is why, in any Musical stage show, the farmayish is always for old songs. These are my personal views but you may agree with them.

Film Andaz apna apna-94 is one of my favourite movies from the new crop. Not only me, but this film has been rated as one of the best comedy films of recent times by many experts and critics. Some of them have called it “A Classic Comedy” film too. Everything about this film was good. The story, acting, Direction, Dialogues, Cinematography, Music and Songs- Lock, Stock and barrel !

Some critics have compared this film’s success with “Albela-51”. Like Albela, this film too had a poor opening, but later on it almost became a Cult film. Like Albela, “Andaz apna apna” also runs full house even now after more than 20 years. In Albela, it was the Music and in Andaz apna apna, it is the dialogues, which enliven it.

The film was produced by Vinay Sinha, who wanted to make a film with Amir Khan. Vinay aproached Rajkumar Santoshi, who had just finished Ghayal-90 and Damini-93 and he wanted to make a comedy film now. Both discussed and decided to make a film on two warring friends…like Tom and Jerry. Santoshi roped in Salman Khan. Both Amir Khan and Salman Khan were big stars by then, but they were good friends too and throughot the film both enjoyed working with each other. Relatively new stars like Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor were roped in as the female leads. Paresh Rawal was brought in with a double role. Rajkumar Santoshi and his team of writers started writing the story, dialogues and the screenplay.

The film was completed in about 2 years’ time and it passed the Censors in 1993. The film was released on 11-4-1994. The response of audience was unfortunately not as expected. Later on Santoshi confessed that the film was marketed and distributed very badly. No one knew the film was even coming. Secondly, other Blockbusters like Hum aap ke hai kaun and 1942- A love story were also released durin the same period. The film barely made a profit of 5 crores. After some time the film was redone with some reshooting and deletion two songs and Censored again on 31-8-1994.

Though initially a poor starter, in subsequent years it has achieved a Cult Status and it was No.1 in VCD sales for one full year. Wherever it ran for the second time, it created records and the film’s dialogues became very popular. Critics like Raja Sen, Aditi Mittal and Khalid Mohammed declared the film a Classic Comedy. The film became so popular that films on its story were made in Tamil (Ullathai Allitha-96), Telugu ( Veede Vadandi Babu-97 ) and Kannada (Galate Aliyandru-2000 ). There was an animated 3-D film named Andaz naya Naya, a remake, but it was abandoned midway.

Rajkumar Santoshi wants to make a remake of this film by taking new actors. He is extremely happy about the film’s success in ldurin the last 20 years. He calls it a “laugh Riot”.

The film is making a Debut on the Blog with this song. The cast of the film was crowded with Amir khan, Salman khan, Raveena Tandon, Karishma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor etc. Juhi Chawla and Govinda made Guest Appearances. There were many comedians additionally like Harish patel, Viju Khote, Mehmood,Jagdeep, Deven Verma etc. The lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuri and Music Director was Tushar Bhatia. The story of the film was-

Amar (Amir Khan) and Prem (Salman Khan) are two daydreamers with a common aim: getting rich by marrying a rich heiress, Raveena Bajaj (Raveena Tandon), daughter of Ram Gopal Bajaj (Paresh Rawal). The guys run into each other on a bus and soon realise that they have a common goal. The trio fail at various attempts to woo the lady.

Finally, they decide to get themselves admitted in her house. Amar pretends to be a guy who has lost his memory after getting hit by Raveena, while Prem pretends to be a doctor and on the other side Raj gets the job as Raveena’s caretaker. The boys don’t know that Raveena’s secretary Karishma (Karisma Kapoor) is the real Raveena and Raveena’s actual name is Karishma. Raveena switched her identity because she wanted to find a boy who will love her, not her money.

Nobody is aware that Ram Gopal has a twin brother called Shyam Gopal Bajaj aka Teja. Teja is a criminal who has taken lots of money from Crime Master Gogo (Shakti Kapoor). Teja hopes to land the riches himself by kidnapping his brother and posing as Ram. He has also planted his cronies Robert (Viju Khote) and Bhalla (Shehzad Khan) in the household.

Ram arrives in India & Teja plans to steal Ram’s money converted in diamonds. Here, Ram sees through the real nature of Amar, Prem and Raj thus declining Raveena’s marriage to either of them. The duo plan to fake a kidnapping where they will heroically “rescue” Ram. Unknown to them, Teja has planned to kidnap Ram as well.

Teja succeeds in having Ram kidnapped. The boys go to rescue Ram, but Teja makes them believe that he is Ram and finally enters Ram’s household. Initially, nobody suspects a thing, but the girls soon smell a rat. The boys have discovered real identities of the girls. Prem has fallen for real Raveena while Amar has fallen for real Karishma while Raj falls for Shruti.

The girls tell their suspicions to the boys. The boys tail Teja and soon find out the truth. Here, Ram tricks Teja and escapes the prison. However, the boys mistake him for Teja, resulting in Ram being imprisoned again – with Amar, Raj & Prem. However, Amar, Raj & Prem succeed in convincing Robert & Bhalla that Ram is actually Teja.

The boys, along with Robert & Bhalla, stop Teja. However, Ram is kidnapped along with Raveena & Karishma. The climax takes place in Gogo’s lair, where the boys try to control the situation along with Ram. In a comic standoff, the real motive of each villain is revealed. However, due to the smartness of the boys, police raid Gogo’s lair, thus rounding up all the criminals. Ram finally decides to have the girls married to Amar, Raj & Prem.

Today’s song is composed by Tushar Bhatia-one composer from the New crop, who shows streak of old charm, while working for new films. The video of this song featurs Amir Khan, Raveena Tandon, Salman Khan and friends. When you see the filming of the song and listen to the song, you will certainly feel like you are watching a song from Joy Mukherjee or Shammi Kapoor film of the 1960s. The tune is very melodious and both Amir khan and Raveena Tandon look absolutely smashing and stunning in this song. All this makes this song one of my favourites from the “Newer” films. I just love this song and I am pretty sure that you too will love it…… ( thanks to wiki, for some information.)
