Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘ठ’
“ठुमक ठुमक चले चाल आँख में काजल की डोरी”

With humble beginnings as a child ‘extra’, way back in 1951, the story of Jagdeep’s career is an interesting discourse. He made his debut appearance as an extra child actor in BR Chopra’s ‘Afsaana’ (1951). His comic propensities became visible in another small role as a child actor in Bimal Roy’s ‘Do Beegha Zameen’. Then on to more noticeable child roles – ‘Laila Majnu’ (1953), the younger Kaif, playing the child version of Shammi Kapoor; ‘Footpath’ (1953), a young street smart pickpocket; the role of Elaichi in Guru Dutt’s ‘Aar Paar’ (1954); the child clown in ‘Munna’ (1954); the young Kishore Kumar in ‘Dhobi Doctor’ (1954); and ‘Railway Platform’ (1955), ‘Mr & Mrs 55’ (1955), ‘Kismet Ke Khel’ (1956), ‘Dhaake Ki Malmal’ (1956), and more. Then comes 1957 and two important films – ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’. Still the child actor, but gaining recognition with every role. The child actors’ team in ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’ was recognized and awarded by Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru.

By this time, the child has grown, and making a transition into adult roles – ‘Bhabhi’ (1957), ‘Barkha’ (1959), ‘Baap Bete’ (1959), ‘Bindiya’ (1960) – all family dramas from the studios in Madras, in which he played significant roles. During the first decade of adult performances, he is trying to make his mark as a hero, but apparently not getting much traction with the viewing public. In 1963, he is the hero opposite to Azra in the film ‘Band Master’, and opposite to Vijaya Chaudhry in ‘Raja’. In 1964, he is the male lead opposite to Ameeta in ‘Punarmilan’, and as the second lead (to Pradeep Kumar) opposite to Mumtaz, in ‘Baaghi’. In ‘Punarmilan’, the music of C Arjun and the iconic songs – “Paas Baitho Tabiyat Behal Jaayegi” and “In Pyaar Ki Raahon Mein, Tera Hi Sahaara Hai”, became popular with the public, but did not do much to raise his stature as a hero. In 1965, he appeared as the male lead opposite to Chitra in ‘Noor Mahal’, and the second lead (to Sheikh Mukhtar) in ‘Faisla’. In 1966, he again played the shadow male lead (shadow to Sheikh Mukhtar again) in ‘Sarhadi Lutera’. In 1965, also came ‘Laadla’, another family drama from AVM Studios, Madras, in which he again had a significant role in the family affairs.

As the 1960s progressed, he continued to move into side roles in films like ‘Aasra’, ‘Afsaana’, ‘Do Dilon Ki Dastaan’, all in 1966, and ‘Aakhri Khat’ and ‘Naunihaal’ in 1967. By the time, the decade of 1960s was coming to a close, he had made a transition into a full time comedian, with films like ‘Teen Bahuraanian’ (1968), ‘Brahmchari’ (1968), Roop Rupaiya’ (1968), ‘Jeene Ki Raah’ (1969) and ‘Darpan’ (1970) etc.  Beyond that, it is all comedy, with the high point coming in 1975 with the memorable role of Soorma Bhopali, the wood merchant, in the timeless icon – ‘Sholay’ (1975).

This song is from another 1975 film – ‘Dhoti Lota Aur Chowpatty’ – a film produced and directed by Mohan Choti. The special thing about this film is that all the main significant roles are played by the junior artists like V Gopal, Kehsto Mukherji, Nazir Husain, Brahmchari, Birbal, Shobha Khote, Johnny Whisky, Tuntun, Mirza Musharraf, Leela Misra etc. And the stars of that era, like Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Premnath, Bindu etc. make small guest appearances.

Music for this film is from the baton of Shyamji Ghanshyamji (reminder that this is the name of a single person and not a duo of music directors), and the lyrics are written by Hasrat Jaipuri, Kulwant Jaani and Gulshan Baawra. This song is penned by Gulshan Baawra. On screen, the song is performed by Jagdeep and Laxmi Chhaaya, with a host of other actors visible in the clip. Apparently, this is a song being filmed, within the film.

This post has become completely about Jagdeep, the actor, although it is meant to be the next episode in the series on Rafi Sb. What started off this thread – as I picked this song for this episode, I was reminded about the iconic “Paas Baitho Tabiyat Behal Jaayegi” from ‘Punarmilan’ (1964). Two songs which are a decade apart – same singer and same on screen performer. But different times and different circumstances. That in itself is a story to be told.

Song – Thumak Thumak Chale Chaal (Dhoti Lota Aur Chowpaati) (1975) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Gulshan Baawra, MD – Shyamji Ghanshyamji

thumak thumak chale chaal
aankh mein kaajal ki dori
thumak thumak chale chaal
aankh mein kaajal ki dori
gora badan
patli kamar

हो हो होsss
ओ ओ ओsss

ओ ओ ओsss
ओ ओ
ओ ओsssss
