Missing Films of 1960s – 23
– – – – – – – – – – – – –

In our effort to bring on the films of 1960s as yet missing from the blog, today with enter the year 1963. This is as per the list of pending films sent by Khyati Ben. ‘Been Ka Jaadu’ is alphabetically the first film of 1963 that is still waiting representation here. To recap the status, I am giving below the list of films from 1961 and 1962, for which we are as yet unable to trace any songs.

The list for 1961 is

  1. Chhatrapati Shivaji
  2. Flight To Assam
  3. Howrah Express
  4. Mahavat
  5. Mera Suhag
  6. Tanhai
  7. Teen Ustad

The list for 1962 is

  1. Aalha Udal
  2. Balidan
  3. Bijli Chamke Jamuna Paar
  4. Deccan Queen
  5. Durga Pooja
  6. Fakiron Ki Basti
  7. Hamen Bhi Jeene Do
  8. Hamen Khelne Do
  9. Hawa Mahal
  10. Jai Ho Mohabbat Ki
  11. Madam Zapatta
  12. Meri Behan
  13. Mohabbat Zindabad
  14. Nadira
  15. Raaj Nandini
  16. Rang Raliyan

In between, during my searches, a collector friend had promised to send me some songs of ‘Madam Zapatta’. But then later he informed me that he had mixed up this film with ‘Madam Zorro’, another film that was released in the same year (and whose songs are available).

From a total of 197 films released in 1961-62 (as per the Geet Kosh listings), the songs of 23 films listed above are as yet untraceable. I request all readers and friends to kindly let us know if there is any information relating to the availability of the above listed films or their songs. The production banners of some of these films are based in Madras, and at least one in Calcutta. And for a handful of films, even the Geet Kosh simply has just the film title listed, with absolutely no further information available as yet.

‘Been Ka Jaadu’ is a costume drama, produced by S.A. Films, Bombay and is directed by N Rajesh. The star cast is listed in the Geet Kosh as Mahipal, Helen, Ulhas, Kammo, Tiwari and Mohan Choti.  The six listed songs are all written by BD Misra and the music is composed by SN Tripathi. The singing voice of this lilting melody is that of Suman Kalyanpur. Given the star cast, my mind wants to say that this song would have been performed on screen by Helen. But without any video available, it still amounts to just a guess. Once again, requesting other friends and readers who may have seen this film, to please add more information about the picturization of this song.

It is very interesting to note that the starting tune of the antaraas very closely resembles the music of the mukhda of the song “Meri Preet Mera Pyaa, Boley Aaj Baar Baar” from the 1958 film ‘Teerath Yatra’, for which the music was composed by the music director duo of Suresh-Talwar.

The song is a real treat, especially for the fans of Suman Kalyanpur, I am sure. A very lilting and attractive melody that I heard for the first time today myself, and instantly fell in love with it. The rendition by Suman ji is a wonderful delight to hear. Listen to this rare find, and enjoy.

Song – Mere Paanv Ki Paayaliya Kaahe Ko Jhanke (Been Ka Jaadu) (1963) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – BD Misra, MD – SN Tripathi

Lyrics

mere paanv ki paayalia kaahe ko jhanke
bhed khole mann ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke

mera roop aur singaar
jaise jhoomti bahaar
mera roop aur singaar
jaise jhoomti bahaar
meri kajraari akhiyon mein
naache hai pyaar
meri kajraari akhiyon mein
naache hai pyaar
dekho naache hai pyaar
mere nainon ki kamaan chale tan tan ke
bhed khole mann ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
mere paanv ki paayalia kaahe ko jhanke
bhed khole mann ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke

main hoon rang ki phuhaar
main hi preet ki kataar
main hoon rang ki phuhaar
main hi preet ki kataar
mere dono hi roop raja
bade mazedaar
mere dono hi roop raja
bade mazedaar
haaye bade mazedaar
bolo latt ghunghraali ye na been ban ke
bhed khole mann ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
mere paanv ki paayalia kaahe ko jhanke
bhed khole mann ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
zara samjho ishaare meri chitwan ke
