Today’s song is from the film Do Roti-57. It is sung by Shanker Dasgupta and Suman kalyanpur ( I think she was still Suman Hemady then), under the baton of composer Roshan.

It was a production of Ismail Films, Bombay. The producer and the director of this film was Ismail Memon. Ismail Memon started his career with Mehboob in 1944 and soon he became his assistant director for the film Humayun-45. Mehboob was specially partial to Ismail and Ismail considered him his Mentor. As a matter of gratitude Ismail even named one of his sons as Mehboob. In the very next year Ismail directed Humjoli-46, along with another struggler Lukmann Ahmed ( he migrated to Pakistan and later returned to India within an year ). Ismail’s first independent film as a Director was Annadata-52. He wrote his own film stories, screenplay and dialogues too.

He produced, wrote stories and screenplay for his next few films like Jawab-55, Do Roti-57, Chandan ka palna and produced the film Naukar with Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri. During the completion of the film Naukar-79, Ismail died. He had married actor Mehmood’s sister Shano, even when he had a wife and a son already. His son from Shano-Naushad later married Neena Dutt, a Pop singer and the daughter of Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt. After Ismail died, Shano married director Jyoti Swaroop.

Film Do Roti-57 had music by Roshan and the film had 8 songs in it. Today’s song will be the 6th song from the movie to be discussed here. This is a Theme song of the movie. While the dance and song goes on the screen Titles also roll by on the screen. The film had Nirupa Roy and Balraj Sahni in the lead. Though Balraj Sahni was in the films since 1946 and had become famous due to his stellar performance of Shambhu Mahato in film, ‘ Do Bigha Zameen’-53, still Nirupa Roy was a bigger star than him. Whenever they both worked in a film together as a lead pair, Nirupa Roy’s name stood above his name in the credits of the film.

After Do Bigha Zameen, producer wanted this pair to depict poor but principled peasants or middle class couple in every film. Thus, they acted in 12 films together. However, Nirupa Roy worked with Ashok kumar in 21 films from Bhai Bhai-56 to Dana pani 89, a span of 33 years.

Balraj Sahni ( Shyam) is an upright honest person, belonging to middle class, who believes that earning one’s daily bread by honest means is much better than earning Lakhs though dishonest means. His sister’s (Manju) husband Laxmidas (Kanhaiyalal) does not agree. He feels that nothing is more important than earning money by hook or by crook. His greediness causes disharmony in the entire family and there are disputes, misunderstandings and misfortunes galore. Shyam tries to give right advise to his brother in law but to no avail. Finally a stage comes when Laxmidas, due to his greed, gets entangled in illegal and criminal activities and is arrested. Then he realises that what Shyam was saying was right !

For few years, in the mid fifties, Hindi film producers were swept away by the Nehruvian socialism. In their enthusiasm of portraying socialism, wrong messages like, ” Earning money is immoral”, or ” all rich are corrupt’, or even ” money makes the man dishonest” were propogated to the youths of India. Thankfully there were musical comedies and mystery films in that period too to provide necessary entertainment in the films. Films like Baarish, Paying Guest, Tumsa nahi dekha, Dil deke dekho, or Mr. X and Apradhi kaun etc helped to erase this misleading socialist propoganda. Even otherwise the public memory is short !

Today’s song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Shankar Dasgupta. Many times his name is misspelt as Shankerdas Gupta, making him appear like a man from U.P. whereas in reality he had his roots firmly in Bengal. Shankar Dasgupta was born in Bengal in 1927. He started learning classical music. His mother encouraged hi. He also learnt playing Violin.

Seeing his interest and expertise in singing, Anil Biswas gave him a break in Film ‘ Milan’-46. It was a Bilingual of Bangla film ‘ Nauka Doobi’., also made by Bombay Talkies. Dilip Kumar did the Hero’s role in Hindi and Pahaqdi Sanyal did it in Bangla version.Shankar Dasgupta’s first ever film song- Upar hai badariya kaari- itself became a Hit and popular . He continued singing 63 songs from 39 films. Some of his films were, Anjan-4,Didi-48, Girls school and Jeet-49, Aahuti and Jaan pehchan-50, Do raha and Ijjat-52 etc etc. A son with Suraiya in film Jeet-49- Chaahe kitni kathin dagar ho- was also a memorable song. His last song came up in film-Chalti ka naam Zindagi-82. He also gave music to 3 films, namely Sheeshe ki deewar-54, Sadma-54, and Hotel-56.

After retirement in 1968, he went abroad, but visited India on and off. In one such visit, while he was coming from Delhi to Bombay on 23-1-1992,he tried to alight when the train slowed down at Matunga Railway Station, he fell and was crushed under the wheels. This was the second case of a music director getting crushing to his death- the first being Vasant Desai in a Lift in 1975.

Today’s song is a very melodious song. You can see Balraj Sahni with a Mustache in this dance and song number….Enjoy.
