When this blog was started on 19 july 2008, I had no idea what was in store for the blog in future. My own assessment was that I would discuss 2500 songs and that would be that because all songs worth covering would have been covered by then.
The blog reached the 2500th song on 29 may 2010. Curiously, I did not mention anywhere in that writeup that I had reached the end of the road with that song. 🙂
Then I met Raja a few months later in Nagpur. During our discussions, I mentioned that I had some 4000 songs with me and I thought that 6000 songs or thereabouts was the upper limit for the blog. 🙂
We duly passed the landmarks of 4000 as well as 6000. Instead of coming to the dead end, the 600th post writeup mentioned that the best was yet to come and that the 10,000th mark did not appear very far.
And today, even 10,000th mark has been left far behind.
And now a days, we do interesting things like covering all songs of movies and also introducing more and more songs to the blog. By now, 835 movies have all their songs covered (amounting to a whopping 6269 songs). 3523 movies are represented in the blog by now.
How do we know that all the songs of a movie have been covered ? And how do we look for “new” songs to be introduced in the blog almost on a regular basis ? And how we do we come up with statistics related to various artists ? How are we sure these days that this blog will go on and on for many years while we were not that sure when this blog was in its earlier days ?
THe answer to all this is-availability of Hindi Film Geet Kosh- HFGK in short. HFGK has five volumes (one for each decade) and they have details of ALL the Hindi movies and their songs from 1931 till 1980.
HFGK is the brainchild of Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraz (DOB 18 november 2016). He was a Hindi movie music lover like millions others. At that time, it was difficult to find information on most subjects, including HFM. He found that details of songs of movies were difficult to come by. So he began to collect information about all the movies and songs contained in these movies. It was a Herculean task (a Bhageerath prayatn in Hindi). He clocked millions of kilometers on those days, met and interacted with lots and lots of music lovers as well as with people involved in creating and dissemination of HFM. The result of his hard work culminated in the form of the five volumes of HFGK. Volume III (1951 to 1960) was the first volume to be published and other four volumes subsequently saw the light of the day.
It goes without saying that this blog and also many other music related blogs , forums, facebook groups etc would not be what they are today. Speaking of ths blog, we refer to HFGK on a daily basis. YIPPYing so many movies was made possible because of HFGK. Bringging lots and lots of unheard of songs from unheard of movies was made possible because we had access to HFGK where we could find mention of tese obscure movies and songs.
We are now into the era of internet and sharing of information is now much faster and easier than what it was a few decades ago when Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraz compiled HFGK.
We music lovers can never thank Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraz enough for bringing so much musical joy and enlightenment in our lives.
It is today (18 november 2016) that Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraz celebrates his 65th birth anniversary. We in this blog extend a very happy birth anniversary to Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraz. We hope for many many happy returns of the day and hope that he will have a long and happy and healthy life ahead and will celebrate many more birth anniversaries.
I wanted to post an obsure song from an obsure movie on this occasion. That can be done easily now adays, thanks to HFGK and YT. I have HFGK (gifted to me by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh and Sudhir Ji on the occasion of the blog clocking 10000 songs in july 2014) and I have copied the list of each and every movie from each and every year from 1931 to 1980 in an excel file. Referring to it, I decided to look for a song from a most unusual name. I chose “Black and White” (1946). Yes, there is a movie like this. HFGK tells us that this movie was directed by S M Raza for victory pictures, Bombay. The movie had John Kawas, Kusum Kumari, Baburao, ranibala, Nazira, Ali, Anita, Vacha etc in it. There were more than six songs in it though mukhdas of only six are known.
When I searched for songs of this movie, I came across an interesting song. This is undoubtedly a rare song by any standard. It is sung by a singer called Mr Ali. I have no idea who he could be. The movie has one actor called Ali. So it could be the case of that person singing for himself in this song.
Shewan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by K Narayan Rao.
Only the audio of this song is avaialable. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song. I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics as applicable.
With this light hearted song, “Black and White”(1946) makes its debut in the blog.

The singer is Mir Ali who also acted in the film. Probably he sang for himself.
