Hullo atulites

I just realised that today (24 november 2016) is the birthday of another 70s/80s actor, producer director. Yes I am talking of the man who made the common man or the boy-next-door feel like a hero- Amol Palekar. I can’t believe he turns 73 today. it seems like yesterday that we saw him in Chitchor, Rajnigandha and Choti Si Baat. It seems like only recently that we saw him searching for a house with Zarina Wahaab and singing “Do deewane shahar main”, or desparately trying to convince his mom about Tina Munim being the right girl for him to get Married to (Baaton Baaton Mein). Then one fine day we saw him as a villian in Vinod Chpora’s ” Khamosh”. With his clean image one would have never guessed that he was the serial killer in that movie. In between all this we also saw him playing a husband to Parveen Babi (Rang Birangi) where he is tutored by Deven Verma about how to bring back the romance in his married life.

In the list of his movies we find that most of his characters are of we might find in our midst on a day-to-day basis but there are a few films where he has been different from his image – the list has “Aanchal”, “Agar”, “Bhumika”, “Khamosh”, “Ramnagari”, “Aks”, and “Teesra Kaun”.

He has been active in the avant-garde theatre in India. He has been active in Marathi and Hindi theatre as an actor, director and producer since 1967. he started his own theatre group in 1972. But his contribution to modern Indian theatre often gets overshadowed by his popularity as a lead actor in Hindi films. He has also directed a few movies in marathi and hindi as also some TV serials.

Today on the occasion of his birthday I thought of a song by Yesudas -who has lent his voice for many songs of Amol Palekar. It is from the 1978 Basu Chatterjee directed “Do Ladke Dono Kadke”. I have seen this movie a long time ago. I vaguely remember that Amol played a small time burglar with Asrani in this movie. They plan to burgle a house which has been marked by some kidnappers to kidnap the child of the house. What results is a lot of chaos as the child ends up with the burglars and both parties keep claiming ransom etc. This movie had Hemant Kumar’s music direction and Yogesh as lyricist.

Lyrics

hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm
kise khabar kahaan dagar jeewan ki le jaaye
kab koi sapna bikhre yahaan par
kab koi sach ho jaaye ae
kise khabar kahaan dagar jeewan ki le jaaye
kab koi sapna bikhre yahaan par
kab koi sach ho jaaye ae
kise khabar kahaan dagar jeewan ki le jaaye

hmm hmm
hmm hmm
yoon hi mere beet gaye
din yahaan din
yoon hi mere beet gaye
din yahaan din
magar ye aasha kahe pal chhin
ek din tere din badlenge
gham ke dhalenge saaye ae
kise khabar kahaan dagar
jeewan ki le jaaye

chaahoon mujhe koi miley
meet man meet
chaahoon mujhe koi miley
meet man meet
mere saath jo gaaye mere geet
jis ke sahaare saanson ka yeh
safar mera kat jaaye ae
kise khabar kahaan dagar
jeewan ki le jaaye
kab koi sapna bikhre yahaan par
kab koi sach ho jaaye ae
kise khabar kahaan dagar
jeewan ki le jaaye
kab koi sapna bikhre yahaan par
kab koi sach ho jaaye
kise khabar kahaan dagar

its possible that it is Hemant Bhonsle and not Hemant Kumar even i was doubtful. so i saw the titles of the movie after i read your comment.

The name of the director appears at 4:32 minutes into the movie. it is indeed Hemant Kumar doing his wonders here

seeing the movie after ages today i also found that Jayanta Mukherjee was the producer so that explains why Hemanta (Kumar) Mukherjee is the music director and Moushmi Chaterjee the heroine; i suppose

Producer of this movie , Jayanta Mukherjee is Moushumi Chatterjee`s husband and acted with her under the screen name of Ritesh in Kuchhe Dhaage(1973)(directed by Raj Khosla)
Jayanta Mukherjee/Ritesh/Ritesh Mukherjee also produced Mazaaq(starring Moushumi and vinod mehra)
