Muslim socials, one of the genres of Hindi films, came into prominence during 1940s when ‘Qaidi’ (1940), produced by Film Corporation of India, Calcutta became a box office hit. Thereafter, in the 1940s, films like ‘Maasoom’ (1941), ‘Yaad’ 1942), ‘Naukar’ (1943) ‘Najma’ (1943), ‘Ismat’ (1944), ‘Zeenat’ (1945), ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945), ‘Nek Parween’ (1946), ‘Shama’ (1946), ‘Dard, (1947), ‘Elan’ (1947), ‘Kaneez’ (1949) etc were released and most of them which became box office successes.

MEHANDI (1947) also belonged to the genre of Muslim social film which was produced under the banner of Fazli Brothers. It was directed by Sibtain Fazli. The star cast included Karan Diwan, Nargis, Begum Para, Ghory, Murad, Jillo Bai, Pratima Devi, Anwari, Jani Babu etc. The gist of the story, based on a review of the film in the March 1948 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine is as under:

Kulsum (Nargis) and Nadira (Begum Para) are friends. Kulsum is poor while Nadira is rich and fashionable. Kulsum gets married to a poor school teacher (Karan Diwan) who loses his job. With the money raised by selling Kulsum’s ornaments, her husband goes to Europe. He returns and becomes the Principal of a school where he meets Nadira. He is now interested in marrying Nadira without telling her that he was already married to Kulsum.

On the day of the marriage, both friends – Kulsum and Nadira meet. Soon the story gets unfolded in which her husband is exposed. After a long lecture by Kulsum, her husband realises his wrong step and thus saved from the bigamy though with consent, he could have four wives.

The film failed at the box office. It is clear that there was no novelty in the story of the film as the audience had already been exposed to such love triangles in films like ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945), and ‘Dard’(1947). I am surprised that the reviewer of the film has criticised the musical score of Ghulam Haider. I find that 5 out of 7 songs are melodious for my ears.

The film had 8 songs written by Saghar Nizami (7) and Majrooh Sultanpuri (1) which were set to music by Ghulam Haider. 4 songs have been covered in the Blog. I am presenting the 5th song ‘hai dil hi dil mein dil ki tamanna’ which is penned by Saghar Nizami.

HFGK is silent about the singer of the song. An uploader has uploaded this incomplete song on YT who has mentioned the name of the singer as Munawwar Sultana. However, the source of the mp3 clip of the song with me has mentioned the name of Zeenat Begum as the singer. I have checked the voice in the song with that of Munawwar Sultana in ab dil mein hai barbaad tamanna ke siwaa kyaa and the voice of Zeenat Begum in allah khata kya hai gareebon ki bataa de. I am convinced that the voice in the song under discussion is that of Zeenat Begum.

This song should be called as ‘dil’ song as this word has been used 52 times in the song.

Another feature of this song is that the prelude and interlude orchestration of this song reminds me of the orchestration style of O P Nayyar. Did O P Nayyar assist Ghulam Haider in orchestration in this film ? Incidentally, it was reported that Ghulam Haider had made use of O P Nayyar for scoring the background music in ‘Kaneez’(1949).

Great Songs of Mehandi

Sagar Nizami
Hairat Se Tak Rahaa Jahaan E Vafaa Mujhe sung by Master Madan
Khel (1950)
Laaj (1946)
Soorat (1947)
Banoo (1949)
Any more

Both Nargis and Begum Para has turned their faces away from Karan Diwan. (from 1:51 to 2:46) Serves him right as he is a two-timer, as unfolded in the small synopsis you have given.
