“Lady Robinhood”(1959), not to be confused with “Lady Robinhood”(1946), was produced by Pannalal and directed by B J Patel for Rekha Chitr, Bombay. The movie had Mehru, Nilofer, Rajan Kapoor, Samar Rai, Miraajkar, Tuntun, Shakila Bano Bhopali, Nazir Kashmiri, Moolchand, Abdul Sattar, Balbir, Ram Raseela, Shri Bhagwan, Nandini, Shiela etc in it.

The movie is described as a “costume drama” which is a euphemism for a B grade movie. And so it follows that this movie must have A grade music.

Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past and they were all special songs in one way or the other.

I find that the remaining two songs from this movie are also special songs, including the song under discussion.

Some music lovers (including me) sometimes wonder how Lata Mangeshkar would have sounded in an O P Nayyar composition. We cannot have a direct way of finding out. O P Nayyar has not even used the voice of Suman Kalyanpur, whose voice resembled Lata’s voice.

O P Nayyar many not have used Lata or Suman Kalyanpur in his compositions, but his assistants, who later on became independent music directors and composd songs that sound O P Nayyar like, have used the voices of Lata and/or Suman Kalyanpur and have made them to sing as Asha Bhonsle/ Geeta Dutt would be made to sing by O P Nayyar.

“Lady Robinhood”(1959) had two Mahendra Kapoor-Suman Kalyanpur duets in it. One of these duets has already been discussed and that song in fact was sung quite like an archtypical Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet under O P Nayyar’s baton.

Here is the second Mahendra Kapoor-Suman Kalyanpur duet from “Lady Robinhood”(1959), where the singers are made to sing in Rafi-Asha Bhonsle style sung in this O P Nayyar like composition of Sardul Kwatra. Bekal Amritsari is the lyricist. This song is a duet, but here Sumna Kalyanpur does bulk of the singing while Mahendra Kapoor only hums a few lines.

Only the audio of this rare song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Rut hai jawaan tum ho kahaan (Lady Robinhood)(1959) Singers-Suman Kalyanpur, Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Bekal Amritsari, MD-Sardul Kwatra

Lyrics

Rut hai jawaan
aa ha ha ha
tum ho kahaan
ho ho ho ho
oy aaja mere dilbar
tu duniya se na dar
aaja re sitamgar
jawaani phir kahaan
rut hai jawaan

dil mein hai yaad teri
jiya beqaraar hai
meri beqaraariyon ko
tera intezaar hai
waqt khaamosh hai
duniya behosh hai
waqt khaamosh hai
duniya behosh hai
aise mein chale ho kahaan
Rut hai jawaan
aa ha ha ha
tum ho kahaan
ho ho ho ho
oy aaja mere dilbar
tu duniya se na dar
aaja re sitamgar
jawaani phir kahaan
rut hai jawaan

zindagi ke saaz par ulfat ke geet gaa
aa gayi bahaar tu bhi ban ke bahaar aa
mujhse tu door hai
zindagi be-noor hai
mujhse tu door hai
zindagi be-noor hai
bhool na jaana meri jaan
Rut hai jawaan
aa ha ha ha
tum ho kahaan
ho ho ho ho
oy aaja mere dilbar
tu duniya se na dar
aaja re sitamgar
jawaani phir kahaan
rut hai jawaan

zindagi ye pyaar hai to
berukhi ko chhod de
apna bana le mujh ko
jhoothhi rasmein tod de
baahon mein thhaam le
haathhon mein jaam le
baahon mein thhaam le
haathhon mein jaam le
phir na aayegaa ye samaa
rut hai jawaan
