Today’s song is a fun song from the film Khota Paisa (1958). It is sung by Rafi, Shamshad and chorus. The film was one of those in which Johnny Walker was the Hero opposite Shyama. Johnny Walker was on the peak of popularity during that period. The film was produced and directed by M.Sadiq, under his own banner Sadiq Productions, Bombay. Music was by Madan Mohan.

Today (14 july 2017) is the Death Anniversary of Madan Mohan. The song and the write up is dedicated to Madan Mohan, in his memory.

Partition of India in 1947 was an unfortunate event not only for India, but also for millions of people on both sides of the border. Many families were broken, many lives lost and billions worth of properties were destroyed. Possibly, every business in India suffered the ill effects directly or indirectly from the Partition. But the Indian Film Industry,I think suffered the most. Ironically, this also gave opportunities to thosands of people in the waiting to enter and try their luck in the film industry. Actors, directors, musicians, studio owners, producers and technicians in various fields of cinema making, filled up the vacancies caused by the exit of those who chose to migrate to the New country.

Migrations continued till about 1970 due to various reasons. Mohammed Sadiq was one of the more successful directors in the pre and post partition eras, who opted to migrate to Pakistan, when he found no takers for his talents anymore here. Unfortunately, within an year of his migration to Pakistan, he died in his chosen country.

Mohammed Sadiq was born and brought up in Lahore, on 10-3-1910. He joined film line in 1932 and came in contact with A R Kardar, when Kardar directed his first Talkie Heer Ranjha (1932). This film’s story and screenplay was written by Sadiq. The pair continued their collaboration in future films as well. Sadiq was a cinematographer, writer of stories-screenplays-dialogues, a producer and a director all rolled into one, in his later career. He wrote for many films like Thokar,Pooja, Holi etc.

He came to Bombay with Kardar. Kardar gave him his first chance of directing independently with his film Namaste-43. Sadiq went on to become a very successful director with films like Rattan (1944), Jagbeeti (1946), Pardes (1950), Khazana (1951), Sainyya (1951), Shabaab (1954), Chaudhavi ka chand (1960), Bahu Begum (1967), Nooerjehan(1967) etc. He produced and directed a few films with Johnny Walker as Hero, like Chhoo Mantar-56, Duniya Rang Rangii-57, Mai Baap-57 and Khota Paisa-58.

Sadiq specialised in films with Muslim backgrounds like Noorjehan, Taj mahal, Chaudhavi ka chand, Bahu Begum etc. For film Badnam-66, he was the producer and director also. In the years 58-59, Sadiq was facing financial crisis. That time Johnny Walker suggested his name as a director to Guru Dutt, for Chaudhavi ka chand. He agreed and the film was a block buster. With its success, Sadiq’s career was revived but for some time only.

In all he directed 27 films, mostly successful ones. When offers dried up, he migrated to Pakistan in 1970 and produced a film, ‘Baharon phool barsao’. However before the film was completed Sadiq died in his birthplace- Lahore on 3-10-1971 and the film was completed by Hasan Tariq.

Johnny Walker was on top of the world in the period from 1955 to 1965. In this period,he was in great demand. Stories and roles were written for him. Major actors were afraid of featuring in the same scene with Johnny Walker as he would eat them raw-i.e. ” kacchha kha jaata tha”. Such was his writ those days !

KHOTA PAISA-1958 is one of such movies, where luckily HE was the Hero himself and Shyama was Heroine. I remember having seen this movie.

Seth Heeralal(S.N.Bannerjee) called his son Moti(JW) a Khota Paisa as he thought him to be useless.Moti was fond of hunting. On one such mission along with trusted munim Narainam(Dhumal),he faces Roopa (Shyama) and faints. He is brought back to the house where the doctor diagnoses it as a “Love stroke” just like a Sun stroke.Narainam tells the Seth about Roopa.Being proud of his fabulous wealth,he goes to Shyama’s father(Rajan Haksar),who packs him off with bruised ego and a Big No !

Hearing this, Moti decides to take SANYAS and joins the ashram of Guru Ramnath(Jeevan).Once he is asked to collect food from 12 houses and one of the houses is that of Roopa, where she sees him and falls in his love.Their parents meet again,in a more friendly manner this time and their marriage is fixed….BUT only after Roopa’s elder sister Geeta’s marriage.
As geeta is in Calcautta they go to Calcutta only to learn that Geeta’s lover is falsely implicated in a murder case by his boss(N.A.Ansari).Roopa,Moti and Geeta together with the police trace the real murderer and get geeta’s friend released. The 2 jodis come back to Bombay and get married one after the other.

Among the composers of 50s and the 60s. Madan Mohan’s name is counted with respect due to his songs based on classical music and the Gazals which he composed. Lata Mangeshkar called him “The prince of Gazals”.

Madan Mohan and C.Ramchandra had same problem. Actually, their strong point was their weak point- Lata Mangeshkar. When Lata left C.Ramchandra, his career took an irreversible nose dive, ending ultimately. In case of Madan Mohan, take away Lata from his popular songs and what remains is very little to rejoice !

The way Madan Mohan’s songs were based on classical music, one would that he was a trained musician. Far from it, he was hardly trained by anyone worth mentioning. It was his natural talent bestowed upon him. Madan Mohan joined Army as a Second Lt. in 1943 and was out of it by 1945….not because of his love for music. According to Isak Mujawar, the Cine Historian, Madan Mohan was dismissed from Army for disobeying orders. The reason was, he failed to salute the Union Jack. He was saved from court martial and asked to leave simply.

Another less known fact about him is that he acted in 8 films. Before joining Army, he acted in V.Shantaram’s Shakuntala ( released in 1943) and Parbat pe apna dera ( released in 1944). Before becoming a Composer, he acted again in Intezaar ke baad-47, Sati Ahilya-49 and Narsimh Avtar-49. Even after becoming a Composer, he acted inn Ansoo-53,Ratnaghar-55 and Munimji-55. HFGK lists his name in all these films.

Madan Mohan was very fond of singing. Earlier to becoming a Composer he had sung a duet with Lata for Ghulam Hyder, but it was not included in the film ( Shaheed). He had cut some Ghazal records also. He sang in 6 films- Aankhen-50, Shabistan-51, Dhun-53, Fifty Fifty-56, Voh Kaun thi-64 and Dastak-70 ( info from Muvyz).

Madan Mohan gave music to 92 films as per his official site ( however, including unreleased films it is 101 films), till Chaal baaz-80. Later his some songs were included in film Veer Zara-2004. There are albums of his unused songs too. He had 2 sons and 1 daughter .

Madan Mohan gave music first time to a film, in which Johnny Walker was working in Gateway of India-57. In 1958 two such films came namely Chandan and Khota Paisa. By the way, Khota Paisa -58 was the only film he gave music too, in which Johnny Walker was the Hero. This film had 7 songs. Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be discussed on this Blog. This song is shot on Johnny Walker and as usual, Rafi uses his special typical voice for Johnny Walker.

आsss आssss आsssss
आss आss आssssssss
आssssssss आssssssssss
आs आsss आsss आsssssss

आss आss आssssssss
आssssssss आssssssssss

Good quwaali tuned by MM. Asha sounds very different, more like Mubarak Begum, if you ask me. (but who asks me any way?)

at 0.21 it is a young Vijaya Chowdhary(of Satta Bazaar fame)

Thanks,Prakash ji.
Who are the other actresses in the song ?

Thanks Arun ji
For writing to me

I found following names of actresses in the credit sequences of the movie:
Shyama,Veena,Amir Banoo,Indira Bansal,Cuckoo,Soofi(I an unable to differentiate this name is a male or female name, Help!),Jeewan kala

Shyama,Veena,Cuckoo are not there,in the song sequence,
Further, I know Jeewan Kala and Indira Bansal from the above names, both of them are not there in the song sequence.

I guess one of the ladies must be Amir banoo
(the lady with her hands on Mridanga, sitting right to Johnny Walker )That too I am taking guesses,I am not well versed with her face…..

Further Vijaya chowdhury`s name is not there in credit sequences, but she is there in the song sequence,as I mentioned above, I know her face very well

Sorry to disappoint you, I will let you know, as soon as I find out other names of actresses in the song sequence

Thanks again

Regards
Prakash

Thanks Prakash ji, for the response.
