“Sautan” (1983) was produced and directed by Sawan Kumar Tak. Tghe movie was a “social” movie starring Rajesh Khanna, Padmini Kolhapure, Tina Munim, Pran, Prem Chopra, Shreeram Lagoo, Shashikala, Paresh Rawal, Vijay Arora, Satyendra Kapooo, Roopesh Kumar, Yunus Parvez, T P Jain etc in it.

This movie is remembered the most for its song, Shaayad meri shaadi ka khayaal dil mein aaya hai . Purists, such as Raja, heartily dislike this song, but non purist folks, who form the majority of population loved this song. There are lots and lots of people who regard this song as a timeless classic. 🙂

The song was about the mummy of the girl inviting the gentleman for chai, obviously to have a “chai pe charcha”. 🙂 The gentleman, aware what the mummy is up to, is reluctant, but gets himself persuaded to partake of that chai with the mummy.

What happens later ? The song under discussion happens in the aftermath of that event. The gentleman gets married to the lady and soon thereafter we find him singing this song where saasu and sasura are likened to teerath and wife is likened to Chaaron dhaam. 🙂 Every married man with readily agree. 🙂

Here is this song from “Sautan”(1983) which is sung by Kishore Kumar. Sawan Kumar Tak is the lyricist. Music is composed by Usha Khanna.

The song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Teena Munim.

Song-Saasu teerath sasura teerath teerath saala saali hain (Sautan)(1983) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Sawan Kumar Tak, MD-Usha Khanna

Lyrics

arre saasu teerath
arre sasura teerath
saasu teerath
sasura teerath
teerath saala saali hain
arre duniya ke sab teerath jhoothe
chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
are chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
saasu teerath
sasura teerath
teerath saala saali hain
arre duniya ke sab teerath jhoothe
chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
arre chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai

beevi jab roothhe to o
yaad aati hai saali
beevi jab roothhe to o
yaad aati hai saali
saali jeeja ko pyaari hai
wo gori ho ya kaali
lekin apni qismat mein to
saala hai na saali hai
arre chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
arre saasu teerath
haha
sasura teerath
teerath saala saali hain
arre duniya ke sab teerath jhoothe
chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
arre chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai

beevi to achchi wo o
hoti jo nakhre waali
beevi to achchi vo o
hoti jo nakhre waali
phoolon se pyaari lagti hai
jab jab deti hai gaali
twaadi to saanu pata nahin
twaadi to saanu pata nahin
par saadi te makhna waali hai
arre chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
are saasu teerath
arre sasura teerath
teerath saala saali hain
hey duniya ke sab teerath jhoothe
chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
are chaaron dhaam gharwaali hai
bolo gharwaali ki
jai
bolo makhna waali ki
jai
aur bolo saath mein apni bhi
nahin nahin nahin nahin
gharwaali ki hi hi
jai

Ah… who can forget ‘Chai pe bulaya hai’. It was a ‘story within a song’. Usually songs are merely about love and all that, but here an upcoming event is musically discussed. The girl seems aware that the man is eager to marry her and merely teasing her by appearing unwilling.

I love those lines ‘theek tum char baje ghar chale aana, mera haath maang lena, zara na sharmana’.

Well, this song is a different one but I guess the filmmaker wanted to emphasize, with humor, that the man is making many compromises, paving the way to ‘souten’.

Hahaha….
I didn’t know there was a follow-up song to THAT song. 🙂
THAT song was one of the reasons I lost faith in music of the time. THAT song was no.1 on Binaca Geet Mala. 🙂 THAT, and songs like “angrezi mein kehte hain” – which was the previous year’s No.1 song. 🙂
Clearly my taste was not in line with public taste. 🙂

Now let me muster the courage to listen to this song posted today. 🙂

please keep some handkerchiefs ready. the movie is one of those which i saw when Doordarshan felt like showing, warna paise dekar hum Sawan Kumar Tak ke movie nahi dekhte.
he followed this movie with a “SOUTEN KI BETI” which had Jaya Prada, Jeetendra and Rekha. of course predecessors to SOUTEN “Saajan Ki Saheli” & “O Bewafa” all with good (popular) songs but nearly same core idea- Betrayal
all the best to you

Didn’t know SKT was so obsessed with Souten. This movie was quite a hit when it was released. I gave it a wide wide berth. Even now I have no wish to see it.

Ok, have seen the video. Theek hai, with the usual scene of heroine getting manao-ed by the end of the song. 🙂
Haven’t watched the movie. Am just thinking, maybe I should, considering I’ve been on a Rajesh Khanna spree recently.
Maybe if I see THAT song in context, I might also change my opinion. Maybe I also join the bandwagon of those who think it is a timeless classic. 🙂

I hope you do not paas out, please keep some emergency help numbers handy.
