Bappi Lahiri is a music director whose name is to this date associated with “Disco” music. He is also regarded as one who hastened the end of the golden era of HFM.

It may sound ironic that when one has to discusses Bappi Lahiri’s better compositions in HFM, one discusses his non disco songs, many of them from his pre disco phase. Even the great compositions of Bappi Lahiri during his “disco” phase were non disco songs. It was not “Disco Dancer” (1982) songs, but non disco songs from “Namak Halal”(1982), “Sharaabi”(1984) and “Aitbaar”(1985) that are fondly remembered to this day.

I just realized that, in the last few years, most of my posts here have been linked to a specific occasion. A birth anniversary, a death anniversary, a blog milestone or something similar.

In the past, I would write a post just for the heck of it – but my writing has gone down considerably. Not just in quality, but in quantity too. And I think there’s a correlation here – it’s a vicious circle. As with many skills, practice makes perfect. Forget perfection, but practice at least helps keep a skill alive.

The less I write, the less I find myself able to string words into sentences – and sentences into paragraphs. Words used to flow in the past, now they’re like Indian batsmen, barring Kohli, batting in English conditions. 🙂

So I thought I should write a post “ainven”. No anniversary or occasion – just writing for the heck of it.

Today’s song is from film Jailor-1938, made by Minerva Movietone and directed by Sohrab Modi.

Thousands and thousands of actors, directors and musicians worked in this film industry, since films started. Not all of them are known or remembered by people. 95 % of these people are not remembered today. Most names had no faces. They were in the films without any specific personal identity. 5% names are known to many, but it is the special few names which became permanently etched in the minds of people.

We have read many accounts of artists, famous as well as obscure and those in between, in the blog. One theme that repeatedly gets played while discussing all these artists is that very few of them managed to have successful and fruitful careers throughout their lives. In most cases, a vast majority of aspirants failed to achieve any worthwhile success. Some relatively lucky persons managed to achieve some modicum of success though that was not enough for them to be considered as successful.

Is Raj Kapoor singing a song for himself?

That was my reaction (to myself) when I heard for the first time, the song ae duniya ke rahne waalon bolo kahaan gaya chitchor from ‘Dil Ki Raani’ (1947) on the Blog. I could not believe that it was Raj Kapoor’s voice. This happened just a few days after I joined the Blog in July 2011. At that time, I felt that this could be a case of giving credit to the actor on the gramophone record label on whom the song was picturised instead of accrediting the real playback singer who could be someone else. At that time, I was not even aware of Har Mandir Singh ‘Hamraaz’ saab’s publications, Hindi Films Geet Kosh (HFGK).
