Hullo Atuldom

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born on 1st July 1938 to a father who wanted the son to be a wrestler. The obedient son did go to the Akhada and trained with his father along with learning music and practising at a friend’s home.

Pt. Hariji has said once, and I quote, “he was not very good at wrestling but the training had helped him build up strength and stamina which has helped him play the bansuri (flute) to this day.”

Initially he was learning vocal music but switched to playing the flute and Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi was his guru. After a few years, Annapurna Devi was his guide and that is when he turned to playing the flute left-handed. Panditji is the recipient of numerous awards including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He has collaborated with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma since the 60s with albums like “Call of the Valley”. The Shiv-Hari combo gave music to a few Hindi films too, most of them from YashRaj Films.

Today we are wishing Panditji on turning 84 a few days back with a composition that is from Yash Chopra directed, Firoz A Nadiadwala produced and May 1993 released “Parampara”.

Much of the movie was shot in the famous boarding school of Ajmer -Mayo College. It starred Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher as the seniors. Raveena Tandon, Neelam Kothari, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan (this was his debut in Hindi films) formed the young brigade. Ashwini Bhave and Ramya Krishnan were cast as Vinod Khanna’s wives – one chosen by him and the other by his father Sunil Dutt. Saif and Aamir were VK’s children who are educated in a boarding school where they sing today’s song. Anand Bakshi wrote the songs.

This is a song which has Amit Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar singing for the collegiates who are enjoying after “lights out” (I have seen this movie a long time back, hope I am correct?)

3rd July a very important date in the life of a singer who has carried the legacy of his family, in HFM. His uncle began as an actor who used to sing his own songs; most of which are popular to this date. I am speaking of the Ganguly family and the uncle I spoke of was Ashok Kumar. 3rd July happens to be the birthdate of Amit Kumar who was born into the Ganguly Family as son of Kishore Kumar (a singer-actor in his own league) and Ruma (who was also an actor-singer).

There are singers and people connected with the arts in Ruma’s lineage too -Ruma’s mother was also a singer. It is hardly surprising that Amit Kumar took to singing early in life. There are interviews available in public Domain where Amit Kumar has spoken about how he used to sing at Durga Pooja pandals and how his mother complained to his ‘Baba’ etc. Amit Kumar has also spoken about how his father “Baba” took him to Bombay (Mumbai back then) and how he began his journey. One thing about Amit Kumar is that he never tried to ape his father. His voice was distinct and we have a few duets of Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar where the distinction is obvious (two of these are on the blog.)

We have had 58 Amit Kumar songs (only) on the blog. The categories listed on the right hand side of the blog show that he has had duets with all possible male and female playback singers. We also have songs (on the blog) where he has appeared on-screen. Today- 3rd July – we wish Amit Kumar on turning 70.

What!!!! did I say 70!!!! Unbelievable. He is still so youthful when we see him on the various reality shows as judge. He is his father’s biggest fan. And we are his fans. A very Very Happy Birthday Amitda.

Belated Wishes to Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia on turning an year older.

With this Shiv-Hari song from “Parampara” which makes its debut on the blog.

palkon ki chaanv mein
chubh gaya pyaar ka
hey chubh gaya pyaar ka kaanta mere paanv mein
chubh gaya pyaar ka kaanta mere paanv mein
ho aadhi raat ko zulfon ki chhaanv mein
aadhi raat ko zulfon ki chaanv mein
ho pad gayi pyaar ki

pad gayi pyaar ki bedi mere paanv mein

aadhi raat mein rut paagal ho gayi

ho aashiq jaag uthhe

saari duniya so gayi

ho aadhi raat mein jaadu chalne lage

ye dil jalne lage
batti bujh gayi

ho batti bujh gayi ye dil jalne lage

aadhi raat ka ye mausam khoob hai
ye mausam khoob hai

mere saamne

ho mere saamne mera mehboob hai
mere saaamne mera mahboob hai
aadhi raat hai baaki
