Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Welcome all to this post which again is coming after a ‘long gap’ in this series. Well, I hope to conclude this series too at the earliest possible 🙂 .
In this tenth episode of ‘Rajesh Khanna – the Phenomenon’ we look at Rajesh Khanna movies in the year 1983. This was the year of Rajesh Khanna. He was back on the top with a bang. I don’t know if I should say this that he was reinstated as the ‘King of Bollywood’ once again.
The successes of the movies ‘Avtaar’, ‘Sautan’, and to an extent of the movie ‘Agar Tum Naa Hote’ brought Kaka back into the limelight again. Another movie ‘Nishaan’ starring Kaka which was also released during this year 1983 also performed well at the box-office. Though he had delivered some versatile performances and kept doing different roles during the period 1975 to 1978 he was still far away from that level of success which he had tasted before.
He finally got a big boost in 1983 after his continued good performances, critically acclaimed performances and some commercially hit performances in the previous years i.e. from 1979 to 1982. Hit movies like ‘Amardeep’ (1979), ’Thodisi Bewafaai’ (1980); critically acclaimed movies like ‘Red Rose’ (1980), ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980); successful movies like ‘Bandish’ in 1980; and then multi-starrer hits like ‘Qudrat’ in 1981, and ‘Raajput’, ‘Ashaanti’, and ‘Dharam Kaanta’ in 1982 had finally paid off. With two back-to-back hits – ‘Avtaar’ and ‘Sautan’, where Kaka was the main lead and a semi-hit like ‘Agar Tum Naa Hote’, brought a new life to Kaka’s filmi career or his ‘second innings’ as it is generally said.
In the year 1983 the following five movies of Rajesh Khanna were released. Although the movie ‘Baabu’ was passed by Censor Board in 1983, I remember it was released in theaters in 1985. Knowledgeable readers can throw more light on this.

01 | Agar Tum Na Hote | Lekh Tandon | 27.10.1983 |
02 | Avtaar | Mohan Kumar | 27.01.1983 |

04 | Nishaan | Surendra Mohan | 06.01.1983 |
05 | Sautan | Sawan Kumar | 24.05.1983 |
Today I present a song from the movie ‘Avtaar’. And since this year 1983 was a special year for Kaka, I would like to present more posts covering songs from this year. Let us see how it works.
‘Avtaar’ made its debut on the blog on 27.08.2012 with this song “Ho Ooperwaale Tera Jawaab Nahin” and I would like to quote below what Atul ji had written about this movie of Rajesh Khanna.
“Avtaar” (1983) was a movie of Rajesh Khanna during the second innings of his acting career when he was no longer a superstar. The movies in which Rajesh Khanna acted during this phase won critical acclaim though even if Rajesh Khanna came nowhere close to regaining his lost crown.
‘Avtaar’ was produced and directed by Mohan Kumar for his home productions Emkay Enterprises. It had Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Sachin, AK Hangal, Sujit Kumar, Rajni Sharma, Madhu Malini, Yunus Parvez, Shashi Puri, Gulshan Grover, Pichoo Kapoor, Ranjan Grewal, Preeti Sapru and others. Madan Puri had a guest appearance in this movie.
Story of this movie was written by Mohan Kumar and Mushtaq Jalili. Screenplay of this movies was written by Mohan Kumar and dialogues were written by Mushtaq Jalili. Editing of this movie was done by Pratap Bhatt. It was passed by Censor Board on 27.01.1983. HFGK Vol-VI (1981-1985) mentions in the foot note of this movie page that this film was re-certified with English sub-titles by Censor Board on 06.05.1983.
The movie has five songs (including one two-part song) penned by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. So far two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. This is the third song from this movie to be posted on the blog.
Today’s song is sung by Suresh Wadkar, Alka Yagnik, and Mahendra Kapoor. This song is picturized on Shashi Puri-Preeti Sapru, Gulshan Grover-Rajni Sharma. Both couples are lip syncing the voices of Suresh Wadkar and Alka Yagnik. Mahendra Kapoor’s voice is used for background score where we can see Rajesh Khanna working hard in his own garage and preparing himself for a greater challenge.
In the movie this song happens when Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi have left their home as their sons have betrayed them. Sachin (Sewak) accompanies them and arranges a temporary shelter for them. Not only this, after listening the conversation between his master and bibi ji he understands what his master needs. He then donates his blood and from the money for the blood, he buys aujaar (tools) for his master so that he can start his own garage. Rajesh Khanna has an uphill task from here to turn the fortunes while his sons are enjoying with their friends. That is where this song takes place, and we have some meaningful lyrics to listen.
That was all around forty years back now.
And if we go back fifty years i.e. to the year 1973 we have the following movies of Rajesh Khanna released in that year.
