Blog Day :

5845 Post No. : 18397

Today is 19 July 2024. It was on this date in 2008 that this blog took its first tentative step by publishing its first offering which was Mile na phool to kaanton se dosti kar li.

I was toying with the idea of this blog where I would give my comments of Hindi movie songs. I was somewhat inspired by Khushwant Singh, who would give comments on various matters in his weekly column “with malice towards one and all”. 🙂

I was posted in West Central Railway Headquarter at Jabalpur. This new zone was formed on 1 april 2003 and I was there in the zone right from its first day. In a way, I was one of the founders of the new zone, so to say. 🙂

In zonal HQ, weekend, viz saturday and sunday used to be holidays. 19 july 2008 was a saturday so that offered me ideal opportunity to get the blog going. The legwork for the blog was being done for a past several days. As soon as I came back to my Railway accomodation on the evening of 18 july 2008, I got busy on the blog work. The fact that I lived alone (my wife and daughter lived at another place 100 km away) helped me in giving undivided attention to my project.

Those days I hardly slept. I was a moderator / administrator of a cricket forum and I would be logged on to that site almost round the clock. The same habit helped me in creating this blog and then running it. The first post, Mile na phool to kaanton se dosti kar li was published at 1:54 AM, viz after midnight when most normal people were fast asleep. 🙂

The blog was supposed to be one song a day blog, so I settled down to this routine. The second article was published on sunday 20 july 2008. It was publised at a most leisurely time viz at 11:38 AM, just before noon.

The third post was once again posted at the unearthly time of 1:21 AM of 21 July 2008. My idea may have been that Monday was a working day for me, so let us publish the post for the day in the wee hours itself and be done with it.

I had published three posts and I had got meagre traffic, something like 40 plus visitors daily but not even one comment. I did some sales pitch about my blog in the cricket forum. This advertisement worked. Raja visited the blog on the evening of 21 july 2008. He left his first comment on the third post at 6:16 AM

Hey Atul….noticed this “other” blog only now.
I am amazed at how prolific you are…and each article is so interesting that it is like Brian Lara’s batting. Prolific and majestic.

Very nice..this idea of a song-a-day. With the video, some background about the situation, full lyrics – in Hindi and translated into English.

Really, really nice. Keep it going.

And since it is a daily feature, I will be checking it out daily. 😉

The songs you have picked also are top-class.

They he left comment on second post at 6:18 PM and on the first post at 6:20 PM.

So if one thinks that I immediately started getting traffic and comments, that was not the case at all. The first comment on my first post was made by Raja on 21 july 2008 at 6:20 PM, more than two days later, on monday evening ! This remained the only comment on this post for more than one year. Second comment on this post was made 13 months later on 21 august 2009. 🙂 So one needed lots and lots of patience and motivation to run the blog those days.

I would typically not repeat a movie. Seeing that there were thousands of movies to chose from and the blog just a few days old, it was easy for me to be non repetitive. In other words, with every song that I was covering in the blog, its movie was making its debut in the blog.

I posted 40 songs from 40 debutant movies in 40 days. Then I realised that publishing just one song a day was leaving a big backlog of “farmaishes” of songs that I was receiving from readers. So I started publishing more than one post in a day from the 41st day (28 august 2008). That day saw three posts being published.

Next day (30 august 2008) also saw three posts being published. This day also saw something for the first time. On this date, movies got repeated in the blog for the first time. In other words, second song from movies that had already made their debut in the blog were covered. “Zindagi Zindagi”(1972) became the first movie that had its second song covered in the blog. This song became the first song from a non debutant movie in the blog.

On 10 september 2008, “Rajnigandha” (1974)became the sixth movie in the blog to have its second sond published. No one took notice, but much later, we came to realise that “Rajnigandha”(1974) had only two songs in it so all the songs of this movie had got covered in the blog. Thus “Rajnigandha”(1974) became the first movie to be YIPPEED in the blog. By the way, the term YIPPEE was not yet coined in the blog. The term would be coined may years later.

YIPPEE milestone may have gone unnoticed, but the first century milestone on 17 september 2008 was not. I had picked this song as the 100th song post because this song had the word “sau” in it. 🙂

After that, centuries were scored in quick succession. When the blog turned one year old, it already had 16 of them. Nowadays it is barely believable, but the blog added 1640 songs in one year (between 19 july 2008 to 18 july 2009).

While we were adding songs to the blog, we were gaining some knowledge about various technologies as well without which it was not possible to run the blog. For instance, some knowledge of html was essential for creating posts. If we wanted to upload rare videos that were as yet unavailable, we needed to have video editing softwares and some knowledge of video editing. If we wanted to search something online, we needed some basic knowledge of how to use search engines to get what we wanted. With growing number of songs, they needed to be catalogued in easy to search way. It meant some knowledge of spreadsheet (excel) and database (access). We needed to acquire knowhow to download/ record videos that were supposed to be undownloadable/ unrecordable. 🙂

Unknowingly, I find that we have sometimes exceeded the capabilities of softwares. For example, I was using office 2003 when the blog started. Excel 2003 served my purpose well till a time came when my excel 2003 could not meet my demands. I required more colums in excel sheet than excel 2003 offered. Excel 2003 offered only a maximum of 256 columns and 65536 rows. The blog had overgrown the capabilities of excel 2003. So I had to switch over to excel 2007 format that offered 16384 colums and 1048576 rows. Nowadays I use excel 2019 which is part of office365. Moreover, I use several audio and video related softwares that I take for granted but my work would be severely hampered if I lose access of these useful softwares.

The most valuable resources that I have acquired is of course human resource in the form of likeminded music lovers whose contributions over the years has turned this blog into a wonderful example of online collaboration where the final outcome is much larger than the sum total of individual contributions. The information that the blog now contains in invaluable for HFM lovers.

Here is a summary of what the blog has amassed over the last 16 years:

Number of… Figure
Songs represented 18996
Movies represented 4968
Movies YIPPEED 1436
Number of days blog is active 5845
Number of dot (no post)days 223
Number of days when posts appeared 5622
Total % of days when posts appeared 96.2%
Guest posters 32
Lyrics contributors 20
Number of lyrics contributors in other scripts 11

The above is just some of the statstics that the blog has notched up. Then there are many other achievements for the blog. We have unearthed songs whose existence was not known. In this blog we have at least 17 HFM songs(may be there are more) that are not mentioned in HFGK. We have unearthed “new” songs sung by Lata, Rafi, Mukesh etc. Till 10 years ago, it was believed that the oldest recorded HFM song was from 1932. On 20 July 2014 , ten years ago, we published our 10000th post that discussed a Hindi movie song of 1931 ! Thus HFM history was made by us.

The blog has notched several other achievements during the 16 years of its journey. We as music lovers and online collaborators of this musical mission can be proud of our achievements. I am sure our journey is far from over. We will hopefully continue to see many more milestones for the blog.

The song under discussion in this writeup is from “Amar Deep”(1979).

“Amar Deep”(1979) was directed by K Vijayan and R Krishnamurthy for Sujatha Internationa, Madras. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Mehra, Shabana Azmi, Ashok kumar(special appearance), Devan Varma,A.K.Hangal,Roopesh Kumar, Savitri Ganeshan, K.Balaje(Guest appearance), Mithun Chakraborty(Guest appearance), Bindu, Introducing Deepa(South) etc in it.

HFGK lists four sungs in this movie. But there were five songs in the movie. Four of these songs have been covered in the blog.

Here are the details of the songs that have been covered in the blog:-

SNo in Blog Song Title Singer/s Lyrics Posted On Remarks
7530 Koi na tere pehle thhi Kishore Kumar Anand Bakshi 20 February 2013 Lyrics by Avinash Scrapwala. Picturised on Rajesh Khanna
14535 Duniya mein sada rahne ko aata nahin koi Rafi Anand Bakshi 31 July 2018 Post by Raja and lyrics by Avinash Scrapwala. Movie ending song. Song not mentioned in HFGK
14815 Tum nahin maanoge Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal Anand Bakshi 30 December 2018 Post by Avinash Scrapwala. Picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi
17476 Halki si kasak masak hoti hai dil mein Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Anand Bakshi 20 February 2023 Lyrics by Prakashchandra. Picturised on Shabana Azmi and Vinod Mehra

Here is the fifth and final song from “Amar Deep”(1979) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a dance song on Bindu who is seen performing this cabarat dance for the benefit of Vinod Mehra. The lyrics of the song makes this a चुगली song, where she is trying to turn Vinod Mehra aginst Rajesh Khanna through disinformation . 🙂

This song was difficult to locate, but the blogging related skills that I have acquired over the years has enabled me to locate this difficult to find song. Here is this fifth and final song from “Amar Deep”(1979).

With this rare song, all the songs of “Amar Deep”(1979) have been copvered in the blog and the movie thus gets YIPPEED in the blog.

EditorLet us enjoy this song, and let us put our head down and take fresh guard for a long and fruitful musical journey that lies ahead of us.
