A very Happy 2025 to Atuldom

Normally, at the turn of the calendar, i.e. beginning of the New Year, people decide on the activities that they will undertake from Day 1 of the new year. These are generally categorised as New Year resolutions. These resolutions could be of giving up a bad-habit like smoking, flying off-the handle at slightest provocation, or looking after their health by taking up exercising or walks etc. People manage to be true to their resolutions for a few days, weeks or at the most a month. Very few manage to keep up the promise they have made to themselves for longer periods. As for myself, I have never made promises or resolutions so that I don’t feel let down (by myself).
But, there is always a thought at the back of my head that I should be more aggressive and send more posts to Atulji. I managed it to an extent in 2023 but the pace fell in 2024. I am not going to give reasons for my slackness, and most of my reasons are genuine (in my own thoughts).

Anyways, here is my first post for 2025 on a date that nearly slipped out my thoughts.

4th January is the remembrance day of Chinu Rajput a.k.a Chinu Shikari. Does that name ring a bell? Well, he is the dancer who does the “MONICA O MY DARLING” bit in the all-time favourite song from the 1971 Nasir Hussain film “Caravan”. “Jugnu”, “Azaad”, “Madhosh”, “Samadhi” were the other films of the 1970s that he was associated with. It seems his son Vinay Rajput is also a background dancer.

4th January is the remembrance day of yesteryear actress Kalpana who was born Archana Mohan and was known for her role alongside Shashi Kapoor & Kishore Kumar in ‘Pyar Kiye Jaa’; ‘Teen Deviyaan’ opposite Dev Anand & Shammi Kapoor in ‘Professor’. She had other notable films too against her name like ‘Naughty Boy’ opposite Kishore Kumar, ‘Teesra Kaun’ opposite Feroz Khan, ‘Saheli’ with Pradeep Kumar as hero etc. She had a short career & retired from films after her marriage.

Also, 4th January happens to be the birth anniversary of the Poet Gopaldas Saxena known to lovers of Hindi Film Music as Neeraj. He was born on 4th January 1925, he would have been 100. ‘Subah na aai sham na aai’, ‘Likhe jo khat tujhe’, ‘Kaal ka paahiya ghoome bhaiya’, ‘Ae bhai zara dekh ke chalo’, songs of ‘Sharmilee’, ‘Prem Pujaari’, ‘Gambler’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, ‘Laal Patthar’ were some of the his songs that I am familiar with and are always at the tip of my tongue. I am sure he has a larger library of songs in Hindi Films.

Nirupa Roy, who was known as the mother of the heroes of the 1980s & 1990s, was also born on 4th January in 1931. She was born as Kokila and motherly roles were not, the only thing, that she was famous for.. Our in-house encyclopedia has written a few blog-posts on ASAD and at other places in the cyber world about Nirupa Roy’s versatility and the roles she enacted in the initial part of her career. She has done the suffering-mother-role only in “Deewar”; as far as I can recall, but even in that film she was a strong-willed lady who couldn’t stand the fact that her son had erred and gone out of hand. She was independent as the blind mother in Manmohan Desai’s ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ who didn’t forgive her husband for being the driver of a smuggler. I was a fan of her sweet smile when she played Bhabhi to Randhir Kapoor in ‘Jawani Diwani’.

Oh! I could go on & on about the her roles and the actors to whom she played a mother. So, I shall get straight to the song which features her in one of her mother roles. Unfortunately it shows her weeping & suffering.
The song is from a film called “Ganga Meri Maa” that released in 1982. It was produced by Joginder Singh (seems he had also made ‘Mere Humdam Mere Dost’) & directed by Shyam Ralhan (whose other known work was ‘Shakka’ that came in 1981). Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Danny, Ranjeet, Nirupa Roy, Seema Deo, Madan Puri, Iftikhar, Satyen Kappu, Sujit Kumar, Preeti Sapru, Paintal, Master Raju, Anjana Mumtaz, & Amjad Khan with many more known faces formed the cast of this film. Gulshan Bawra wrote the lyrics for songs that were composed by Rahul Dev Burman and sung by Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi & Asha Bhosle who were the only singers used.

The story of the film in a few words is:

The film traces the journey of Ganga (Nirupa Roy), a tragedy-struck widow and how she reunites with her long-lost sons and to avenge the death of her husband.

The film seems to have been ‘long-in-the-making’. As I was looking up details for this film I found out that 4th January also happens to be Anjana Mumtaz is also celebrating her birthday today. She was born in 1941.
I am sure the readers/ followers of this blog must be wondering why I haven’t mentioned R D Burman’s death anniversary, which is also today. People who know me well will be wondering if I had forgotten. Not at all. How can I? It was such a sad day for lovers of his music when he bid goodbye to this world in 1994. In fact, I landed up on all the other anniversaries & remembrance days as I was looking for hitherto unrepresented songs of Panchamda from not-so-popular films.

I considered the Kalpana- Feroz Khan film “Teesra Kaun” (unheard by me) & found that it was YYIIPPEEEED already. “Saheli” didn’t qualify as it had music by Kalyanji Anandji. Similarly, I had to give up on various other films (for this post) before zeroing-in on “Ganga Meri Maa”.

Here is the song which gives us a different angle to Panchamda’s music with Nirupa Roy being the central protagonist. I would love to know if Danny is playing the role of some BABA; who is the lady playing Sujit Kumar’s wife.

Nice post Peevesie’s Mom jee, combining the anniversaries of so many artistes falling today. I have not watched this movie, but had listened to this songs couple of times earlier while browsing Pancham songs. Danny is playing Malang Baba in this movie as per information available. The lady playing as Sujit Kumar’s wife is actress Anajana Mumtaz only (I am surprised on your asking this question, but it seems like ‘sometimes it happens case’ 🙂 )

Thanks for covering this Pancham Song.

Regards,

Avinash

I asked as the face is not clearly visible. I was wondering if it was Anjana Mumtaz?
