‘Kal Hamaaraa Hai’ (1959) was produced by K Amarnath and was directed by S K Prabhakar. The film’s story and the impression of the film have been well covered in the recent two articles on the film in the Blog. So, I will not repeat the same. Suffice to say here that the film was inspired from then Government’s efforts to improve the economic condition of the people of India through Five-Year Plans. However, there is a need to weed out corruption, anti-social elements and the social injustice. In these efforts, citizens have also some duties to perform, that is, to follow the path of honesty and hard work with the positive attitude.
In this film, Jeevankala (born: June 29, 1944) got her first break as a solo dancer when the film’s producer, K Amarnath had watched her in a dance concert. In this film, she has performed two dances. There is an interesting trivia as to how she got her name ‘Jeevankala’. When her mother (a silent film actor) was pregnant with her, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar, who was her neighbour in Pune and also an amateur face reader, predicted that she would deliver a girl who would become an artist. However, before she could deliver, Master Dinanath passed away. On the day of the naming ceremony of the new born girl, the entire Mangeshkar family had joined. Lata Mangeshkar gave her the name ‘Jeevankala’ to reflect true to the prediction of her father.
Soon thereafter, the entire Mangeshkar family had shifted to Mumbai. Jeevankala did her early schooling in Pune and got trained in Kathak dance under the guidance of Babasaheb Gokhale and the Bharatanatyam dance under Professor Gaekwad for a period of 7 years. Later, she learnt all other formats of dances by herself. It was once again Lata Mangeshkar who was instrumental in bringing Jeevankala and her mother to Mumbai to stay with Mangeshkar family in Walkeshwar so that she could join Lata Mangeshkar’s musical shows in Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra. It was during one of such programmes K Amarnath had watched Jeevankala and offered her role as a solo dancer in the film, ‘Kal Hamaaraa Hai’ (1959). Before that, Jeevankala had worked as a child actor in some Marathi and Hindi films.
Started as a dancer, over a period of time, she got character actor’s roles and also romantic roles pairing with comedians. She also got the role of a vamp in ‘Mr. X in Bombay’ (1964) and ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968). She worked in lead roles in two Marathi films, ‘Putra Wahva Aisa’ (1961) and ‘Maratha Tituka Melwawa’ (1964).
In 1969, Jeevankala got married to Ram Kelkar, the story, screenplay and dialogue writer in Marathi films. It was a marriage arranged by Sulochana Latkar who was like a ‘God Mother’ to her after the death of her mother in 1965. After marriage, Jeevankala virtually quit the film industry. Coincidentally, after the marriage, her husband, Ram Kelkar became a successful story, screenplay and dialogue writers in Hindi films like ’Piyaa Kaa Ghar’ (1970), ‘Beimaan’ (1972), ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ (1974), ‘Sanyaasi’ (1975), Kaalicharan’ (1976), ‘Asha’ (1980), ‘Hero’ (1983), ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989), ‘Kal Nayak’ (1993) etc. Jeevankala stays in Mumbai with her two sons and a daughter, Manisha Kelkar who has acted in Marathi and Hindi films beside being an anchor for many TV shows.

I am presenting the 7th and the final song from the film, ‘aise naa dekho rasiyaa’ rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is written by Shailendra which is set to music by Gajanan Karnad. The song is picturised on Jeevankala and the patron is Jayant. Jeevankala starts her dance in Kathak style. Towards the end of the song when she is singing sargam and aalaap, she switches over to Bharatanatyam dance style. The choreographer for this dance song was Krishnan Kutty.
The background of the song under discussion is that Jayant’s wife, Leela Chitnis is celebrating her missing son’s 22nd birthday, and Jayant has missed the occasion as he was enjoying the mujra dance. On the other hand, Bharat Bhushan, their missing son who has grown up as an orphan is planning to kill Jayant as a revenge for forcing to take the blame on him of Jayant’s car accident in which an old man gets seriously injured. The plan to kill Jayant fails but this leads to Bharat Bhushan’s accidental meeting with Madhubala (in traditional woman’s role) who later reforms him to the path of honesty and hard work.

Re Jeevankala – another trivia that I was unaware of !! Thank you Sadanand Kamath!!
Went through all the other 6 write-ups on “Kal Hamara Hai” songs. Feeling very nostalgic!!
By the way, just wanted to add that the two dancers in the song “Jaao rasiyaa” are Jeevankala & Sheila Kashmiri
