Hullo Atuldom

A long time ago, sometime in my childhood, there used to be an ad that used to start with “a small & happy family”. The family is shown to be sitting and enjoying quality, family time when suddenly there is a problem in the form of a flickering TUBE-LIGHT. Basically it was an ad for some brand of TUBE-LIGHTS that we used to see in cinema halls. From that ad, I learnt that small things effect smooth functioning of families.

Our films, which have stories based on families & interpersonal relationships, always have a nasty character that is responsible for effecting the smooth functioning of families. These films are always overflowing with emotions- sentiments- good & bad behaviours of the various characters. These films were given an uncomplimentary title:- “Six Handkerchief film” meaning these films were meant to move the audience & make them sniff into their handkerchiefs.

I was looking for films, not yet present on the blog, which had, both Om Prakash & Nutan in its cast. I know these two have been seen in many films of the 60s like “Tere Ghar Ke Saamne”, “Khaandan” etc. I think there have been very few films, post 1970, where Om Prakash & Nutan part of the cast. But, I found a film called “Hamara Sansar” (as written in the titles of the film) that released sometime in 1978.

On googling for details of the film “Hamara Sansar” I found that it was categorized as “Family Drama”. It had Shashikala, Aruna Irani, Jalal Agha, Mithun Chakraborty (this is how it was spelled in the titles of the film), Sarika in supporting cast with Nutan & Parikshit Sahni playing parents to two kids who are in primary school. Mithun (must have been at the start of his career, he was unrecognizable) was the younger brother to Parikshit Sahni; the children’s pet Chacha.

I began seeing the film, but couldn’t sit beyond the first 20 minutes so I am unable to tell what role Om Prakash’s character of Seth Harishchandra plays in the film; I think he plays Sarika’s father. Similarly, I don’t know what Aruna Irani or Meena T. play in the scheme of the film but I guess Shashikala is the cause of the upheavals in the family. The film had a host of child actors- Baby Padmini, Master Alankar, Master Ravi & Master Rajesh. Plus we have Mukri, Parveen Paul, Nazir Hussain, P.Jairaj, Sapru, Birbal, Mohan Choti, and many other well- known character actors of that period in the cast and a pet Dog -Varsha. The film had Ravindra Jain as lyricist & music director. He used Mahendra Kapoor, Hemlata, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Chandrani Mukherjee & K.J. Yesudas as the voices for the six songs. The film was produced by K.G.Bhatt under the banner of Usha Productions & was directed by T. Prakash Rao. On googling I found that T.Prakash Rao is a cousin of T. Rama Rao & father of T.L.V. Prasad who makes films in Telugu, Hindi and one each in Bengali & Marathi.

The plot of the film “Hamara Sansar” is very simple (as per what I read on the various sites on the internet):-

It was the story of two brothers (Pratap & Prem), very much in harmony with each other. The bhabhi (Nutan) also adores her devar. The younger brother, a graduate, lives in the village, with his mother (Pratap’s stepmother). A sister and her husband also moved in with them, who left her mother-in-law’s house because she was forced to work. But Prem is against it, and he sends them back with her husband. Prem’s mother is also traveling with them. But instead of going to the house of the daughter’s husband, they decide to go to the city to Pratap and stay with him, under whatever pretext. And then the life of the “small & happy family” goes topsy turvy, leading the audiences to reach out for their handkerchiefs. 🙂

21st February is the death anniversary of Nutan. She was born to the renowned actress of the early era of films -Shobana Samarth & poet Kumarsen Samarth as their oldest child. She was crowned Miss Mussorie in 1952. Prior to that she had already acted in “Hamari Beti” which was directed by her mother Shobhana Samarth. She was married to Rajnish Behl before the best phase of her career happened, smashing the myth that married woman don’t find success in Indian films (of course there are many actresses who have smashed that myth, Nutan’s niece- Kajol, being one of them). Nutan was a very versatile actress and could handle the heavy duty ‘Bandini’ (1963) & ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ (1963) a lighthearted role, in comparison to the one in ‘Bandini’ with ease. She had a sense of rhythm that was needed for the song and dance numbers that lace Indian films. Remember ‘C-A-T Cat Cat maane billi’ from ‘Dilli Ka Thug’ (1958); may not have been easy matching step for step with Kishore Kumar. Nutan was a 5-time Filmfare Best Actress Award winner for ‘Seema’, ‘Sujata’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Milan’ & ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’. She had also won a Best Supporting Actress award for ‘Meri Jung’.

Nutan passed away of cancer in 1991; she was only 54.

21st February is also the death anniversary of Om Prakash. He was a large-hearted person in real life Very friendly with all who associated with him. He was a versatile actor too. He had the ability to infuse humor and warmth into his characters, coupled with his distinctive voice, making him a favorite among audiences. He has also played scheming characters in Hindi films, earning him a place as one of the prominent character actors of his time. He began his career as a radio personality in 1937 when he was spotted by a prominent filmmaker of that era, who gave him a break in films. The 1950s saw him gain recognition for his acting skills and his career spanned nearly 4 decades. His last released film was ‘Bhai No.1’ which came in 2000, two years after his death. In between 1937 & 1998, Om Prakash also produced 2-3 films (about which our in-house encyclopedia Arunkumarji & Sadanandji have written in a few of their posts). He died of a massive heart attack in 1998 at the age of 78.

I would have loved to spot a song featuring Nutan & Om Prakash for this post, the closest I have come to that is this film where the two actors are in the cast. Maybe if I sit through the film I may find scenes which have the two seasoned actors showing off their histronics.

Today’s song has Nutan & Parikshit Sahni out on a picnic to celebrate the birthday of the father (Pratap a.k.a. Parikshit Sahni). The film opens with Nutan returning from a temple where she had gone to pray for her husband on his birthday. The news of the birthday leaks out to the colleagues of Pratap & the benevolent boss (Sapru) gives Pratap the day off & also the office car so that the employee can spend some happy times with his family. I must say “Bhagwan aisa boss sab ko de”. Also I must admit that, Parikshit Sahni used to look good. The song is in the voice of Hemlata & Mahendra Kapoor.
