‘Basera’ (1981) was produced by Ramesh Behl under his banner, Rose Movies and was directed by Ramesh Talwar. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee, Rekha, Poonam Dhillon, Raj Kiran, Iftekhar, A K Hangal, Sudha Chopra etc. The film was based on a Marathi novel written by Leela Phansalkar. In fact, Ramesh Talwar has directed IPTA play, Tanhaai’ (1971) based on this novel. It was decided to convert his IPTA play into the film, ‘Basera’ (1981).

The film is about two sisters who are wedded to the same man by a twist of fate. In an interview published in ‘Filmfare’, April 22, 2016, Ramesh Talwar had revealed that for the roles of two sisters, he had already finalised Rakhee. He told Rakhee that if she accepted the role of the younger sister, he would take Nutan for the role of elder sister. However, Rakhee preferred the elder sister’s role and suggested Rekha’s name for the younger sister’s role. After the separation of Rakhee and Gulzar, this was the first film with Rakhee in which Gulzar got associated as the screenplay, dialogues and song writer. Interestingly, Rekha, apart from her role as the second wife of Shashi Kapoor is also in the role of Raj Kiran’s mother, who in reality, is elder to her by 5 years.

Many scenes in the film are presented in flashback. However, I have presented the story of the film with some details in a sequential order as under:

The film revolves around the three protagonists, Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee and Rekha who stay in Pune. Rakhee is married to Shashi Kapoor and they have a boy. Rakhee’s younger sister, Rekha gets married but her husband dies in an accident. Hearing this news, Rakhee falls down from the staircase of her house with serious head injuries. She becomes lunatic and admitted in a mental hospital. Rekha, now a widow, takes care of Rakhee’s young son by staying in Shashi Kapoor’s house as his father (A K Hangal) is old.

Rakhee is in the hospital for years. The father persuades Rekha and Shashi Kapoor to get married. After their marriage, a son is born to them. Rekha treats Rakhee’s son (Raj Kiran) as her own son and Poonam Dhillon is his fiancée who is studying for her final year in MBBS in a medical college. The family is in a happy position except that both Shashi Kapoor and Rekha miss Rakhee who is still in a hospital without being aware of what has happened in her family during her absence.

After about 14 years, Rakhee comes out of her unconsciousness. After few days, she becomes normal except that her memory is erased for the last 14 years of happenings in her life. The doctor (Iftekhar) treating her, plans for sending back home. Before that he discusses with Rekha to create a feel in the house as if nothing has happened during the last 14 years until her mental condition fully stabilises. She may react violently if she gets to know that her husband has married to Rekha. Both Shashi Kapoor and Rekha are happy that Rakhee has come home as a normal person. All the family members try their best to present themselves as if nothing has changed in the household. Rekha goes back in her white dress as a widow and sends her small son to stay with Poonam Dhillon. In this process, everyone in the household suffers gladly for the betterment of Rakhee.

One day Rekha’s son escapes from Poonam’s Dhillon’s house as he has missed his parents for many days. He meets Rakhee. During the conversation, he tells her innocently the real scenarios of the house. Rekha and Shashi Kapoor get exposed. They are forced to reveal the entire truth. Rakhee gets shocked and become unconscious. Doctor (Iftekhar) is called who gives her injection After regaining consciousness, she sits quietly for some time after she becomes violent forcing the family to lock in her room and calls for the ambulance to readmit her in the mental hospital.

In the meanwhile, Poonam Dhillon against the advice of family members, goes and meets Rakhee in her room despite her threatening to kill her. But Poonam tells her to go ahead. Rakhee hesitates when Poonam tells her that she looks normal and she is feigning as a mentally ill person. Seeing that Poonam is not retreating, Rakhee breaks down and tells her that for the happiness of the entire family, it is better for her to be away from the family and the mental hospital is the best place for her in the background of her mental illness. She takes an oath from Poonam that she will not reveal her true condition. The ambulance comes and takes Rakhee to the mental hospital.

In the mental hospital, Rakhee confesses to the doctor as to why she has feigned the violent behaviour and seeks his cooperation. But doctor says that he cannot continue her in the hospital as she is not mentally ill. She begs for a job in the hospital so that she continues to be in the hospital. After some thinking, doctor agrees. The entire family visit the hospital to meet Rakhee but doctor denies them permission to meet her on the ground that meeting her at this juncture may reignite her violent behaviour. The film ends with Rakhee watching from her room her family members reluctantly leaving the hospital with Poonam looking back at her.

I have watched the film for the first time only recently and regretted that I did not get to watch the film on the big screen when it was released. This is one of the rare Hindi films in which all the characters are kind-hearted. There is no negativity even among the small characters. Despite the film being a family melodrama where the emotions flow majorly in the scenes, it is not a tearjerker film. In fact, there are some lighter moments among the family members. The audience’s interest in the film has been maintained due to crisp screenplay and the tight editing without an iota of unnecessary details or sub-plots.

All the main actors – Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee, Rekha, Poonam Dhillon, Raj Kiran, A K Hangal and Iftekhar have given excellent performances. After watching the outstaning performance of Shashi Kapoor in the film, I feel that his potential as an actor in the genre of the family drama has been underutilised by the makers of Hindi films. Rakhee has a tailor-made role in the film which she has proved her excellence in many such type of roles. But it is Rekha who steals the limelight by giving the multiple shades in her performance starting with a naughty younger sister of Rakhee and the sister-in-law of Shashi Kapoor, followed by her role as a subdued young widow, a lovely housewife and the guardian of Rakhee’s child after her marriage with Shashi Kapoor and a sacrificing wife presenting herself as a widow after Rakhee comes back home from mental hospital.

The film had six songs written by Gulzar which were set to music by R D Burman. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 4th song, ‘aaungee ek din aa jaaun’ rendered by Asha Bhosle which is picturised on Rekha.

The context of the song is that Rekha, in her widow’s attire after Rakhee returns from the mental hospital, is going through the photo album of the wedding of Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee when the latter joins her. In one of the photographs, they watch a photograph in which Rekha is seen teasing Shashi Kapoor in his wedding night. They recall the sequence of the scenes by way of a song as a flash back.

I am surprised that u have seen this film b4

this was one of the films in Rekha’s post-Khoobsurat line of films that i saw in a cinema hall. I still see it whenever it comes on television

specially the scene where Rekha sends Shashi Kapoor to buy vegetables, he encounters Poonam on the way & turns the prank on Rekha & Raj Kiran- that was a cute scene

then the nok-jhok between father & son when they go to Delhi to meet Poonam’s parents & Shashi Kapoor finds a photo of Poonam in between every pant-shirt of Raj Kiran in the suitcase & suggests that Raj Kiran should carry an album for his clothes

Like u have written in this post, this song happens in the flashback after which we are shown Rekha’s shaadi, bidaai etc. And I love to see Shashi Kapoor in the role of the loving, mature jija & husband & damaad to A K Hangal

Good non-tearjerker- family movie as you have also said in the post Sadanandji

thank you for the song

Peevesie’s Mom,

After reading your comments, I am inclined to beleive that you have the scene by scene memories of this film. Either you have watched this film multiple times or you have been so impressed by the scenes you mentioned that they have been stored in your mind.

Thanks for going through the post.
