Hullo Atuldom

A few days back we got the news of the passing away of veteran actress Sandhya, said to be 93 or 94. Some sources give her birth year as 1938 & place of birth as Kochi? Kochi? I saw this video which was posted as tribute to the departed soul. This video as also some news channels give her birth year as 1930 & place of birth as Gujarat. I recall that there is a post by our in-house encyclopaedia that will give us all the details that we need to know. Details like her birth name was Vijaya Deshmukh, actress Vatsala Deshmukh was her sister, & another actress of Marathi films, the (late) Ranjana Deshmukh was her niece.

As for the first songs that introduced me to this dancing actress were probably from the 1959 released ‘Navrang’; specially the Holi song. I think I also saw a little of ‘Do Ankhen Barah Haath’, ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’, ‘Teen Batti Char Rasta’ when they were telecast by Doordarshan. But I have definitely seen songs from films, with Sandhya, on various music programmes and have felt that her dance style was different from the dancing actresses of those times. I have read that she acted in very few films, all of were produced & directed by V. Shantaram who she married sometime in the 1950s. She is said to have retired from films in 1975 with ‘Chandanachi Choli Ang Ang Jali’ in Marathi. Her last Hindi film was ‘Pinjara’ in 1973 which was remake of the 1972 successful Marathi film ‘Pinjara’. She is also said to have vowed to lead an austere life.

Her character in ‘Pinjara’ was the exact opposite of what she was like in real life i.e. her reel life & real life were not same. She played the character of a Tamasha dancer in the Marathi version; a Nautanki artist in the Hindi remake. V. Shantaram made the Hindi version with nearly the same starcast & storyline. There were minor changes as in the character that Nilu Phule played in the Marathi film was played by Raja Gosavi in Hindi. This was the debut film of Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, both in Hindi & Marathi, he was recommended for the role by actress Vatsala Deshmukh & V. Shantaram cast him after seeing Dr. Lagoo’s performance in the play ‘Natsamraat’.

“Pinjara” had around 9 songs of which this is the only one on the blog. Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, and Manhar Udhas were the voices used for the songs written by Bharat Vyas & composed by Ram Kadam.

I remember that there was a group dance that our Marathi teacher had choreographed for an annual during my school days. We had danced for the Marathi song ‘Disla ga bai disla‘. I scrolled through the Hindi version of the film to find the Hindi version of the same for this post. The dances of the film were said to have been choreographed by Sandhya herself.

Our tributes to actress Sandhya ! May her soul rest in peace ! She will be always remembered for her movies.

Thanks for this post Peevesie’s mom jee. The songs of this movie ‘Pinjra’ in Marathi are very close to my heart and I like them all for its beautiful music by Ram Kadam which had the fragrance of the soil, culture and folk of Maharashtra. I had not listened to the Hindi versions much compared to the Marathi versions. The songs in Marathi are sung by Usha Mangeshkar and her voice suits well for this movie’s songs.

Thanks again,

Thank you for liking my choice

I had also heard only the Marathi versions’ songs, I heard the Hindi songs only as I wrote this post
