“Gul Sanobar”(1953) was produced and directed by Aspi Irani for Super Pictures, Bombay. This movie based on an Arabian nights story had Shammi Kapoor, Shayma, Agha, Rajni, Zillobai,P Kailash, Jagdish Kanwal, Nazir Kashmiri, Agha Shapur, Anis, Nagpal, Bazid Khan,Habib, Alka, Ruhi etc in it.

The detailed story of this movie was given by Sadanand Kamath jee while discussing a previous song from the movie. Here is the story of the movie as given by him:

The film opens with a King (probably Nazir Kashmiri) of Magical kingdom, sitting on his throne in the midst of cobwebs making a pronouncement that he wants all the human beings to be slave to his kingdom. But he is aware that Prince Badar (Shammi Kapoor) is one human being who is going to attempt to smash his kingdom. In the other kingdom, Prince Badar (Shammi Kapoor) whose parents have put him under the surveillance of Namak Halal (Agha) out of the fear of King of Magical kingdom, has run away from the palace. His father orders Namak Halal to bring Prince Badar back to the palace.

Namak Halal meets Badar in the midway to request him to return home. But he refuses. Both of them reach the kingdom of Khorastan where he sees Princess Mehrangez (Shyama). Badar is mesmerised by her beauty Princess Mehrangez also likes him. They meet for the first time when Princess Mehrangez cautions him the danger he is exposed to because she is under surveillance of Asif, the King of Khorstan (Jagdish Kanwal).

Badar leaves and proceeds to meet the King Asif who has put a condition that whosoever answers to the question of the Princess which she will put him through a dance expression and gestures has to guess the question correctly after which he will proceed to find the answer correctly to marry her. Many aspirants have failed in this riddle and they are languishing in the jail. Since Badar has correctly guessed the riddle, ‘what did Gul do to Sanobar’? Princess puts a garland in the neck of Prince Badar but by doing this she tries to suffocate him. Prince Badar gets an impression that the Princess is trying to kill him. However, after his second meeting with her in her palace, he gets to know that she is under the magical spell of King Asif who is under the influence of the king of the magical kingdom.

Badar, in his efforts to solve the riddle, goes through thrilling adventures before he reaches the kingdom of Sanobar. On the way, he encounters a man who was on a hunting expedition and now is surrounded by a tribal force. Badar saves him from the tribals. To his surprise, the hunter happens to be the Prince of Sanobar (P Kailash) to whom he wanted to meet to get the answer to the riddle. Prince Sanobar refuses to divulge that answer because if he does that, he has to kill the person to whom he has divulged the secret. Badar also insists that he had also come to Sanobar to get the answer to the riddle and he cannot go back until he gets the answer. Prince Sanobar takes Badar to his palace where he finds Gul (Rajni), the most beautiful woman in chains, is being whipped by slaves.

Prince Sanobar gives the reason for the harsh punishment to Gul who is his beloved. Once he has followed her in the night as he suspected her that she is secretly meeting someone else. He caught her red-handed and wanted to kill her for unfaithfulness. But he thought that instead of killing her, it is better to give her the harsh punishment perpetually. Badar explains him that Gul is innocent and whatever she did was under the influence of the magic spell of the King of Magic Kingdom. He has himself observed that in case of Mehrangez when she was trying to kill him by suffocation. He pleads to Prince Sanobar to release Gul from chains. Satisfied with his explanation, Prince Sanobar releases Gul from the captivity. Gul weeps and smiles on her release and looks at Badar who is surprised to see that her weeping and smiling have transformed into pearls and flowers, respectively. He tells Prince Sanobar that these are the proof that Gul is innocent and pure. With this, Badar proceeds to Khorstan as he has found the answer to the riddle.

But in Khorstan, the King Asif, instead of rewarding him for getting the correct answer to the riddle, gets Badar arrested and brings him before Mehrangez who pronounces him death sentence under the magical spell of King Asif. However, Prince of Sanobar with his army attacks the kingdom of Khorstan and enter the palace. He gets Badar released who fights with King Asif. After a long sword fights and trick scenes of Babubhai Mistry, King Asif is killed and with this the magical spell on Mehrangez disappears. Prince of Sanobar brings princess Gul with him. It transpires that Princess Gul is the sister of Princess Mehrangez and they are pleased to see each other after a long time.

The film ends with Prince Badar along with Princess Mehrangez returning to his parents and his mother (Zilloobai) thanks god for listening to her daily prayer to bring back Prince Badar safely.

Lyrics

Maa ko kabhee na bhoo oo ool
maa ko kabhee na bhool

ek yahee hai sachcha naata
aur pyaar hain jhoothhe ae
ek yahee hai sachcha naata
aur pyaar hain jhoothhe

maa ko kabhee na bhoo oo ool
