Moving ahead with the series on Asha Bhosle singing for actresses whose first names begin with the letter “A”, we come to Archana Joglekar.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, three actresses from the Marathi film industry crossed over to Hindi cinema with varying degrees of success. They were Archana Joglekar, Ashwini Bhave, and Varsha Usgaonkar. Although the Hindi film industry was based in Bombay (now Mumbai), only a few leading Marathi actresses were able to establish themselves in Hindi films. Usha Kiran and Jayshree Gadkar were notable exceptions. Most other Marathi actresses found work primarily in supporting roles.
I first started noticing Archana Joglekar (without knowing her name at the time) in the early 1980s as a model and in Marathi programmes on Bombay Doordarshan. By the mid-1980s, she had also begun appearing in Marathi films. Soon thereafter, she made her Hindi film debut with Mardon Mein Mard (1987). She subsequently played a leading role in an Odia film and, later in her career, also acted in a Tamil film. During the 1990s, she gradually reduced her film appearances but expanded her repertoire by working in television serials. It was also during this period that she married Dr. Nirmal Muley and moved to the United States.

When Atul started his alphabetical series of actresses who have lip-synced to Asha Bhosle’s voice, I suggested the names of some actresses who were missing from the list. I also sent the respective songs. Amala’s name was on my list, along with the song “Step by Step” from Dost (1989). When I asked Atul if he would mind my writing a post on the song, he replied that he would welcome it. This is how this contribution of mine came about after a long hiatus from this resourceful blog.
I became aware of Amala through her first Hindi film, Pushpak (1987). The film made quite a splash in the Hindi film industry, as it was a silent movie released in the middle of a decade that was full of very loud films. I did not have the chance to watch it in a cinema hall at the time. Amala looked quite different from the usual Hindi heroines of that era. In her interviews, she came across as a very sympathetic person who was actively involved in efforts against cruelty to animals. This brings us to the plot of the movie in question.

Today’s song is from a dubbed film Aayi phir se Bahaar-1960.
Originally made by Asha Productions, Madras, the film’s rights were bought by National productions, Madras. It was directed by A.Bhim Singh and the Music Director was Vedpal Verma. The film was originally a Tamil Hit film ” Raja Rani”-1956. The cast of the film was Padmini, Shivaji Ganeshan, Raja Sulochana, Rajendran, Mathuran, Krishnan and many other Tamil artists. The Hindi version was produced by D.K.Tehrani, Ambalal Patel and Kanti Joshi. The 8 songs of the film were written by Indivar (4), Sajan Bihari (2) and Vedpal verma (2). All the songs were composed on the original Tamil film song tunes, so the MD Vedpal verma had only to arrange music players etc.

Today’s song is from a so-called ‘Social’ film, but actually a Murder and Mystery film – Laalten-1956.
The film was made by Harish Productions, Bombay and it was directed by Tara Harish, owner of the banner. Music Director was Hemant Kumar and his assistant was Ravi. There were 3 Lyricists, namely Indeevar, Shevan Rizvi and Qaif Irfani. The cast of the film included Geeta Bali, Motilal, Kanhaiya Lal, Mukri, Shammi, Harish, Mohan Choti, Uma Dutt and a host of B and C grade actors. The guest artiste was Bhudo Advani.

The film was produced by Ratilal Vora and it was directed by Marathi Cinema’s well known personality Dinkar D. Patil. The music was by Vasant Prabhu. The cast of the film was Sulochana Chaterjee, Shakuntala Devi (mother of actress Ameeta- Tumsa Nahin Dekha fame), Surendra, Shammi, Baby Naaz, Manhar Desai, Kuldeep Kaur, Gope and others.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-8
This duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the 1990 movie ‘Dushman’. This title “Dushman” was also released in the years 1939, 1957, 1971 and 1998. All these four movies are already represented in the blog. “Dushman”(1990) came 19 years after “Dushman “(1971). Among all “Dushman” ( 🙂 ) I guess that the movie released in 1971 starring Rajesh Khanna in the title role (Dushman chaachaa 🙂 ) must be the most popular and successful of all these movies.
“Dushman”(1990) was directed by Shakti Samanta for ‘Shakti Films, Bombay’ i.e. his home productions. The cast of this movie has Mithoon Chakravarty, Mandakini, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Alok Nath, Deepa Sahi, Tanuja, Biplab Chatterjee, Vijay Arora, Ranjeet, Tarun Ghosh, Manek Dutt, Bob Christo, Ravi Nandi, Shakti Thakur, Anirudh Agarwal and others. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 12.03.1990.

There were 3 films made with the same title, in 1940, 1952 and 1958. This film was made by Filmistan. It was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. This was ,incidentally, his last film as a Hindi film director.
During the early era of talkie films, till the 1960s, there was a horde of Gujarati directors and producers. Bhatts, Trivedi, Thakur, Shahs, Desais, Pancholi, Doshi, Daves were some names frequently found directing various genres. Usually they specialised in certain classes and types of films. The Bhatts (Shankar and Vijay) liked to do Mythological films, Ramnik Shah handled stunt, action, fantasy films, Jayant Desai was social film oriented etc.
