#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
Today’s song is from an obscure movie ‘Caravan’1944. This ‘stunt movie’ was directed by Aspi for ‘Ranjeet Movietone, Bombay’. It had Arun, Kamala Chatterjee, Rani, Premlata, Keshri and others.
Geet Kosh lists as many as fifteen songs for this movie including one two version song. There were four lyricists in this movie viz. Swami Ramanand, Munshi Aziz, Pandit Indra and Sharma. Music was composed by Bulo C Rani. The playback singers for this movie are Ameerbai Karnataki, Bhola, Arun, and Zohrabai Ambalewali.
Here is the story of this movie as given by our beloved in-house encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee in the past:-
CARAVAN-1944 was yet another roll out from the stable of Ranjit’s assembly-line production of 1944.
It had 15 songs, sung by the big names of the times, Amirbai, Zohrabai, Arunkumar, Bhola etc. This was the only plus point of this movie.
There is a Gypsie caravan, led by an old Nayak-Sheroo. He decides to hand over the reigns of the caravan in the hands of his son-Shankar, who is slightly literate and very good looking. Naturally all the eligible girls around, surround him to get his attention. He has to win the Chief’s post by doing something brave and full of valour.
The caravan finds a ‘Gori Mem’-Marie (played by an Anglo indian- Sylvie St. Clair), half dead in the way. They revive her and the responsibility of finding her relatives falls on Shankar, since he is somewhat literate, among all. The lovebird-Shanno (Premlata) of the caravan gets jealous of Marie, who gets cosy with Shankar.
The confusion is removed after few reels and in the end Marie goes away and the Hero/Heroine lives happily ever after.

So far, eight songs from this movie have been covered, including the multiple (two) version song that is mentioned with ‘two different mukhdaas’ in Geet Kosh. However, only the first version of this song has been covered so far. I guess that the other version is not available as of now on internet.
Today I present the ninth song from this movie which is in the voice of Zohrabai Ambalewali and Bhola Shreshtha.
Pt Indra is the lyricist of this song.
