‘Charandas’ (1977) was produced by Kunwar Mohinder Singh Bedi and was directed by B S Thapa. The cast included Om Prakash, Vikram, Lakshmi, Urmila Bhatt, Farida Jalal, Ashalata, Vandana Shashtri, Sheetal, Bipin Gupta, Nana Palsikar, Paintal, Sundar etc. Naresh Suri and Geeta Khanna made their debut in the film. Manorama, Maruti, Rajan Haksar and Yunus Parvez were guest artists. Amitabh Bachhan, Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt and made their friendly appearances.

I have recently watched the film for the first time mainly because Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Sunil Dutt among others had made their special appearances in it. While the first two appeared as qawwali singers, Sunil Dutt appeared as a prosecuting lawyer. The film’s story mainly moves around Om Prakash in the title role of Charandas who has started his modest life as a mechanic in his workshop. Through his hard work, he rises to own an industrial conglomerate. But the resultant wealth has costed him his happiness and the atmosphere of haven-like modest house made by his wife and the children. As soon as he has made much more wealth than what is required even for a luxurious life, he felt as if he lives alone in his palatial house as his family is spoiled by excess wealth and most of the time, they are busy with parties. With his unconventional strategy, Charandas brings his family to senses with a happy ending.

The story of the film in some details is as under:

Charandas (Om Prakash) lives with his family consisting of his wife, Kamla (Urmila Bhatt) and two school-going children. He owns a workshop which has a tagline, ‘From cycle to aero plane are repaired here’. He has an assistant, Ramlal (Sunder) to help him in the workshop. His family is religious and well-disciplined. He has a close family friend, Aslam (Bipin Gupta) and his wife (Vandana Shashtri) to whom he often visits.

Over a period of time, Charandas has been able to gradually convert his business into an industrial conglomerate comprising, engineering, chemical, electronics etc. Now, he has become a big industrialist and a wealthy person. With the free flow of money and with it the luxury of life, Kamla and her children get spoiled. They indulge in parties of rich and wealthy families. Kamla even fails to attend the birthday party of Aslam Bhai as she spends hours for her make-up and hair style. Charandas, on the other hand, has remained the same person in his attitude and behaviour when he was a mechanic. Earlier, the family used to take the dinner together where Kamla will serve them. Now, Charandas take dinner alone and his maid, Vilasia (Farida Jalal) serves him the dinner. There are constant frictions between Charandas and his wife and children.

One day, Charandas on his return from a business trip finds in house a birthday party of his dog being celebrated by his family in which dogs of their friends are being served dinner. Kamla also announces the engagement ceremony of her dog for which the costly gifts are exchanged. Fed-up with the behaviour of his wife and children for the extravagances and taunting him to be an old-fashioned man, Charandas leaves his house alone in his car. While he is driving the car in the night, a woman tries to end her life by coming in front of his car. Suddenly, Charandas stops the car and saves the woman who introduces herself as Lalli (Lakshmi).

The story goes in a flashback mode. Lalli was staying in a village in Himachal Pradesh where she secretly married Ashok (Vikram) against the family’s wishes. They both shift to Mumbai where Ashok joins the theatre as an actor. He has developed closeness to the heroine (Sheetal) of the play and often spends night in her house. One day, Lalli decides to visit the place and tries to bring back Ashok from heroine’s house when he introduces her as his maid to the heroine and thereafter he slaps her. Feeling dejected with no one of help her, she decides to commit suicide. After hearing her story, Charandas tells her that they both are distressed. So, why not make their life happy together. They decide on a strategy to teach their respective family a lesson by posing as a live-in couple with the connivance of Vilasia, his house maid.

Charandas brings Lalli to his house with a strict instructions to Vilasia that from now onwards, no parties will be held in the house and no one will disturb them in their rooms on the first floor. Charandas buys for Lalli the costly jewelries and sarees. In the meanwhile, the heroine has expelled Ashok from her house after seeing how he has behaved with his wife, Lalli.

A distressed Vikram who is sipping tea in a restaurant suddenly sees Lalli with Charandas entering the restaurant. After getting the details from a waiter, Ashok visits Charandas’s house and meets Kamla. Again, both are distressed by the behaviour of their respective spouses. They decides to join hands. As a strategy, Kamla invites Ashok to stay in her house so that after seeing Ashok in the house every day, Lalli may change her mind. But this ploy has not so far worked. On the contrary, Charandas has announced that he has decided to hand over the management of his companies to Lalli with authorisation to operate the bank accounts. This is the distressing news for Kamla and her children.

Kamla meets Aslam and brings him to her house to convince Charandas to give up Lalli and join the family. But instead, Charandas behaves as if he is drunk and tells him that he does not recognise him. Aslam is convinced that Charandas has lost his mind and he is completely under the spells of Lalli. He advises Kamla and Ashok to consult a lawyer who suggests them to bring some proof to show that Charandas and Lalli have close relationship. For this purpose, a photographer Pinto (Paintal) is hired to take pictures of them together in the pose to show that they are love birds.

In the meanwhile, Charandas and Lalli along with Vilasia have left for Kashmir. Kamla along with Ashok, Ramlal and Pinto also follow them in Kashmir. While Charandas and Lalli were enjoying their holidays in a park in Kokernag and elsewhere, Pinto takes some photographs. Kamal files suit in the court to declare Charandas as mentally ill person who under the influence of Lalli has given all his factories and wealth to her disregarding his wife and children.

The prosecuting lawyer (Sunil Dutt) presents all the witness which gives the impression that Charandas has lost his mind by giving his factories and other wealth to Lalli. It is only at the time of cross-examination of Charandas that the judge (Nana Paliskar) comes to know that Charandas has bequeath his factories to a trust comprising his workers because he loves his family more than his wealth. He also reveals to the judge that since he and Lalli were distressed, they entered into a strategy to create a drama of love birds. He always treated Lalli as his daughter and Vilasia is witness to this as she was always staying with Lalli.

Kamla realises her mistakes and withdraws the suit filed in the court against her husband. Charandas unites with his family and Ashok unites with Lalli.

The film had five songs written by Rajendra Krishan which were set to music by Rajesh Roshan. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the second song, ‘kuchh soch ke pyaar kiyaa hai’ which is rendered by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi singing for Lakshmi and Om Prakash, respectively.

The context of the song is that Charandas (Om Prakash) and Lalli (Lakshmi) are acting as a ‘live-in couple’ who are holidaying in Kashmir along with Visalia (Farida Jalal). Kamla (Urmila Bhatt) with her son and daughter, Ramlal (Sunder), Ashok (Vikram) and the photographer Pinto (Paintal) have followed them to take photographs of them in the poses of a love bird as proof. This is required in connection with filing a suit by Kamla against her husband Charandas for bequeathing his factories and all the wealth to Lalli. Charandas and Lalli are aware of their presence. So, they act like lovers who are singing in a park in Kashmir. Pinto is taking photographs of them which they do not mind.
