Blog Day :6546Post No. :20371

Hullo Atuldom

Here is wishing the founder of this blog A very very Happy Birthday. May you always have good infrastructure to keep this massive blog running. (I say this every year). This post is my way of thanking him for creating this library which is a reference point for music lovers, specially Hindi music lovers as the blog is a place where one finds a collection of film & non-film songs.

Happy Birthday Atulji.

I have always marvelled at the way Atulji manages his time – between his pets, family, job and his passions (cricket & music). May he continue to be so efficient. He has kept the blog going, almost non-stop, since 2008- today is blog day 6546. I said ALMOST NON-STOP as there used to be blank days when Atulji used to be on travel or transit, but there has been ZERO BLANK days in the last three-four years. He began the blog as SONGADAY, but quickly went on to post more than four songs per day (there have been days where there have been 13 or 14 posts). All the best Atulji for keeping the blog going.

“Pawanputra Hanuman” (1957) was produced by Homi Wadia for his own banner Basant Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by “The Trick Scene Specialist” Babubhai Mistry (as written by our in-house encyclopaedia in one of his posts on the songs of this film) and the music was by the melody Master Chitragupta Shrivastav (again I am borrowing from encyclopaediaji’s post). The film had 10 songs that were written by Gopal Singh Nepali & Saraswati Kumar Deepak. Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt, Sudha Malhotra, Shamshad Begum, Mohd Rafi & Manna Dey were the playback singers used. The following six songs are present on the blog:-

The cast of the film was S.N.Tripathi as Hanuman, Mahipal as Shri Ram, Anita Guha as Maa Seeta, B.M.Vyas as Ravan, Ratnamala as Mandodari, Indira Bansal and a host of other regular actors.
Today we are having a song that has Seeta maa (Anita Guha) singing her love for her Ram when they are in the forest, during exile. Shri Ram (Mahipal) and Shri Lakshman are also seen but I am unable to identify the actor playing Lakshman.

A few lines about Anita Guha:

My first memories of seeing Anita Guha in a film was as Santoshi Mata in the 1975 super-hit ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. I distinctly remember that I had not seen it in a cinema hall but on the small screen (television) in a hospital ward. An interesting memory actually. My grandma (remember her when I see chitrahaar, play badminton, chess, carrom, knit or crochet, she has helped me with my studies too) was unwell and was admitted in a hospital in the summer vacation of 1983 (exactly 43 years).

I was assigned the job of being her attendant during the day time & my dad or chachu would relieve me in the evening after they returned from their workplace. There were some perks to being the attendant. One was the snack that the hospital served the patient (a sandwich or poha or upma) in the afternoon & my grandma used to share it with me. The other was a movie in the afternoon time.

I shall explain.😊

Cable television was a new trend in that year. My grandma was in a room with TV facility. So, I was not unhappy being her attendant as the hospital had a cable connection and showed a movie every afternoon from about 3.30, after the patients nap time etc. 4.30 to 7 pm was the visiting hours when a whole lot of uncles & aunts used to visit the patient. If I remember correctly, there were not much restriction about the number of visitors allowed.

So, one evening, my dad came to relieve me and what does he see? The patient was not to be seen. She was engulfed by a whole lot of visitors. Why? Because everyone stayed back to see the film that was being shown that day. My Grandfather was sitting in prime seat. And if I believe what my dad & chachu have said, even the duty nurse was part of the audience.

That film was “Jai Santoshi Maa”. This is my recall of the film & Anita Guha.

Later on, over the years, I saw her in many films as mother, aunt etc. My grandma pointed out to me that one of the ladies singing ‘hum panchhi matwale’ in ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ was the person who played Santoshi Mata.
As I sat to write this, I remembered that I have read somewhere, Anita Guha was the aunt of actress/ dancer Prema Narayan & she was married to character actor Manik Dutt. She was born in January of 1932 & came to Bombay in her teens. She made her debut with ‘Tongawali’ in 1955 and followed it up with films such as ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ (1957), ‘Sharada’ (1957), and ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’, for which she earned nomination in Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress category, the only nomination of her career. Before ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (JSM), she had played Sita in mythological films ‘Sampoorna Ramayana’ (1961), ‘Shree Ram Bharat Milap’ (1965). She had acted in other mythologicals too, like ‘Kavi Kalidas’ (1959), ‘Jai Dwarkadesh’ (1977) ‘Krishna Krishna’ (1986) etc, but the adulation that she got post ‘JSM’ was unparalleled; though she has said that she herself was not a devotee of the goddess.

June 20th happens to be her 19th anniversary.
