‘Abhishek’ (1987) was produced by Nari Hira under the banner of Hiba Films and was directed by Pavan Kaul. The cast comprised of Aditya Pancholi, Archana Puran Singh, Neeta Puri, Dan Dhanoa, Balbinder, Jeet Upendra, Sapna Sarang, Nitish Bharadwaj, Ashok Sharma, Farah Khan, Pravin Bhalla, Tarendra Chauhan, Balwant Bansal, Jeetendra Rana, Gautam Siddhartha etc. Anju Mahendru and Shiva Rindani appeared as guest artists. This was Nari Hira’s 7th film released in video format for TV and VCRs. The film was certified by Censor Board on May 11, 1987 as a video film.
Producer, Nari Hira (real name: Narendra Hiranandani) was a media baron who owned Meghna Publishing House and published ‘Stardust’ and ‘Society’ among others. Nari Hira (26/01/1938 – 23/08/2024) was born in Karachi. His family migrated to India after partition and settled in Mumbai. He started working for an advertising agency and moved to Bensons (Ogilvy & Mather) as a Management Trainee. After spending couple of years in USA and the UK to study the publishing business and some exposure to Hollywood, Nari Hira started his own Meghna Publishing House and later ventured into producing video films under the banner of Hiba Films. His video films, mostly in the 1980s provided opportunities for newcomers and yet-to-establish actors like Aditya Pancholi, Urmila Matondkar, Kanwaljeet Singh, Zarina Wahab, Anju Mahendru, Archna Pooran Singh, Neeta Puri etc. He also produced a couple of feature films under the banner of Meghna Films. I have watched his interview conducted sometime in 1987 which gives me an impression of a well-studied and an intelligent person in his vocation and clarity of his thoughts on the film industries in India and abroad.
The film was made in keeping with the trends of many Hindi feature films of 1980s in which a honest man who suffers from anti-social elements is not able to get justice from law-enforcing agencies. He turns himself as a vigilante to take head on with anti-social elements and in doing so, he becomes the ‘Robinhood’ of helpless strata of the society. In this film, a honest man who runs his family business faces the harassment from anti-social syndicates. He decides to turn a vigilante to provide justice to the affected persons by assuming a different character and operating in the night only. In doing so, he later comes to know that the kingpin of that syndicate is his brother-in-law who secretly runs a business of counterfeit currency under his own family business. The story tackles as to how he manages to expose his brother-in-law. However, the film has an unusual ending.
The story of the film with some detail is as under:
In the film, there are two main characters. The first, Arun Salvankar (Aditya Pancholi) is a honest and a caring person who has his family business set up by his late father. The second character is Ranbir Singh (Dan Dhanoa) who is the brother-in-law of Arun having married his elder sister, Lalita (Sapna Sarang). It was their love marriage which Arun’s father approved aa he liked simplicity in Ranbir Singh. It is practically Ranbir Singh who runs the family business even though Arun is the owner and yhe managing director. Arun has full faith in his brother-in-law who is well respected among his relatives and friend circles. But what is not known to Arun and his sister is that in reality, Ranbir is a kingpin of a counterfeit currency syndicate and a hardcore criminal.
In the city, Arun has become a vigilante as the law enforcing agencies has failed to effectively tackle crimes against the common citizens and it appears to him that they are indirectly influenced by someone from the anti-social gangs which limits their effectiveness. He assumes a new name, Abhishek and operates in the night. In one of the cases involving a murder, the accused, Nagpal (Shiva Rindani) is set free due to the lack of evidence for which judge passes stricture against the police for not doing proper investigation. In the night of his release, Abhishek kills Nagpal leaving his miniature flag at the dead body signifying that it is Abhishek’s job.
Abhishek meets individuals who are exploited by the anti-social elements without revealing his face and after getting details from the affected persons, Abhishek gives instant justice by punishing the wrong-doers including killing them. In these actions, Abhishek has already killed three important gang leaders of Ranbir Singh though Abhishek is not aware as to who were those killed by him. He gives extra-ordinary punishments to three youths who has raped Sachin’s (Nitish Bhardwaj) sister by tying them to a pillar on the road square in the night with a board hanging in their neck indicating that they are the rapist. In the morning, people gather at the place and assault them badly.
Inspector Chavan (Balbinder), who has been investigating the mysterious killings of three persons has once again come under pressure when the alleged rapists of Sachin’s sister are arrested from the road square from where police gets the clue that it was once again Abhishek’s work. While interrogating Sachin about his sister’s rapists, Inspector Chavan comes to know that he had met Abhishek in an abandoned church in the night whose face he could not see except his clasped hands. However, Chavan does not find anyone in the night in the church during his visit.
Journalist, Malvika (Archana Puran Singh), as part of her job as a journalist have been meeting many high-profile people during the parties hosted by them. She has met Ranbir during his wedding anniversary party and later in the birthday party of his daughter, Ramola (Neeta Puri). She is in love with Jagdish Mallah (Jeet Upendra) who works in Ranbir’s office. During this party, Malvika meets Arun and they both become friends. Arun invites Malvika to his house where they have a drinking party, though Arun does not drink. As the night approaches, Arun leaves his house for his duties as Abhishek after Malvika gets too intoxicated and falling asleep.
Next morning when Arun returns, Malvika is surprised that he was not in house the whole night. She starts suspecting Arun to be Abhishek. Arun accepts her suspicion. For Malvika, it is a ‘breaking news’ and she is in a hurry to go to her office. But Arun stops her and agrees that he is guilty of taking law into his own hands by operating as Abhishek. He further says to Malvika that he has no objection if she wants to publish the story in the press. But before that she needs to hear the background as to why he has become a vigilante.
The story goes in flashback. Arun’s father had committed suicide in shame after he came to know that his son-on-law, Ranbir has been carrying on undesirable activities under the name of his family business. After the death of his father, Arun became the managing director of his family business. Since Arun had no interest in running the family business because he was interested in joining the police force, the business was de fact run by Ranbir and he was successfully running his illegal activities under the guise of the family business. Due to his high connection, he ensured that he was insulated from the criminal activites. Arun felt that like him, there are many common citizens who are helpless and do not get timely justice. So, Arun felt that there was a need for him to become a vigilante providing instant justice.
Malvika is in a moral dilemma. She has identified an elusive Abhisek which police has failed to do so and they have offered reward of Rs. one lakh to anyone who catches him dead or alive. This ‘breaking news’ can make her famous, which can promote her career path as a journalist. The temptation to reveal Abhishek’s identity is great for her. However, after listening to his story, she has developed a soft corner for Arun/Abhishek. She feels that apart from a nice gentleman, Arun has a legitimate grievances against the law enforcing agencies. With this dilemma, Malvika decides not to break the news in a hurry until she knows something more about all those connected with Ranbir.
In the meanwhile, Jagdish Mallah accidentally comes to know about printing of counterfeit currency in which Ranbir’s men are involved. Ranbir also knows that his business of counterfeit currency has been exposed. His wife, Lalita, confronts with him as to the police, he has shifted the blame on her brother, Arun as the managing director for the counterfeit currency racket. Ranbir kills his wife and put his men to kill Jagdish Mallah. Jagdish somehow manages to escape and meets Arun who is with Malvika. Things become very clear to Malvika that it is Ranbir who is the kingpin of the syndicate but unfortunately, Arun, as a managing director of the family business, the blames of running the counterfeit currency syndicate has fallen on him. A police team with Inspector Chavan is on the way to the old, discarded church to arrest Arun/Abhishek.
In the night, Arun visits Ranbir’s office and kills his close aids and then dashes into Ranbir’s room. He reveals him that he has killed his wife who was pregnant with his child after a long time. Ranbir is shocked he has been waiting for such a news for years. As a retribution, Ranbir kills himself with a gun shot. Arun returns to his night shelter at the old, discarded church where he finds Malvika waiting for him. He apprises her of what had happened to Ranbir and tells her that he is going to surrender to the police. Malvika pleads not to surrender to the police as he would be badly treated, which she will not like. She is willing to join him in his escape from the police. Arun declines and moves to go out to surrender, leaving his gun in the church. Malvika picks up the gun and shoots Arun who is killed. Hearing the gun shot, Inspector Chavan rushes inside the church and finds Arun/Abhishek dead with a gun in the hand of a shocked Malvika. He congratulates her for winning the reward of Rs.one lakh for killing Abhishek and asks her as to why she killed him. Malvika says that in this world, no one can kill him so she has given a decent farewell to her own Abhishek. With this, Malvika walks away from the old church towards the sea.
The film had five songs written by Ram Sidharth (3) and Chander Oberoi (2) which were set to music by Kirti Anurag. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, a ghazal, ‘deewaar-o-dar pe naqsh banaane kaa junoon’. The song is written by Chander Oberoi and is rendered by Dilraj Kaur and Jagjeet Singh.
The context of the song is journalist Malvika (Archana Puran Singh) has unearthed the dual life of Arun (Aditya Pancholi) who operates as Abhishek in the night as a vigilante. She has decided to make it as a ‘breaking news’ for the press. However, after hearing the background as to why he had turned vigilant, Malvika develops a softening feelings toward Arun and eventually they start liking each other. She is with him in his ‘junoon’ (obsession) to punish the wrong doers. This is reflected in the ghazal picturised on them.
