Chandrashekhar Vaidya (known to film audiences as Chandrashekhar) was born on July 7, 1922 in Hyderabad (which is now in Telangana) India.
He also produced, directed, and acted as the lead hero in his hit musical film ‘Cha Cha Cha’ (1964), which was the first film of Helen in a lead role. ‘Cha Cha Cha’ is one of the films featured in Avijit Ghosh’s book ’40 Retakes: Bollywood Classics You May Have Missed’. In 1966, Chandrashekhar directed and produced his second film ‘Street Singer’.
After 1968, Chandrashekar was not getting offers to act in a leading role, and he subsequently moved into character roles. He was regular character actor in directorial ventures of Shakti Samanta films with Rajesh Khanna as the lead hero, with films like ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Ajnabee’, ‘Mehbooba’, ‘Alag Alag’ etc. He played the character role of Arya Sumant; Dasharatha’s prime minister in Ramanand Sagar’s TV series ‘Ramayana’ at the age of 65. His last screen appearance was in the Sanjay Dutt starrer ‘Khauff’ in 2000.
Chandrashekhar served as president of CINTAA from 1985 to 1996. He served in various capacities in the many associations of film artists. His son Ashok has been a producer in Television and films for many years. One of his grand sons is an ad film maker & another (his daughter’s son) -Shakti Arora – is an actor seen mostly in television serials.
Chandrashekhar died on June 16, 2021; at the age of 98, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
“Aurat Teri Yehi Kahani” (1954) is a film directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi and produced by Ranjit. This had Chandrashekhar in a substantial role along with Nirupa Roy, Sulochana Latkar, Bharat Bhushan. The film had music by Bulo C. Rani with D.N. Madhok, Saraswati Kumar Deepak, Butaram Sharma & Pandit Phani as lyricists. Asha Bhosle, Rajkumari Dubey, and Talat Mehmood were the playback singers used.
7th July is also the birthdate of the lyricist Saraswati Kumar Deepak, who has penned three of the seven songs in this film. This song< by the lyricist is already there on the blog.
In 2019, Sudhirji had written about this lyricist in this post which I am reproducing here:
“Saraswati Kumar Deepak was born on 7th July 1918, at Navsthala Hasanpur in district Bulandshehar in Uttar Pradesh. His original name was Ram Gopal Sharma. Not much information is available about his early years. His education was in Hindi and Sanskrit. He did his BA from Meerut College. As a young man, he had begun writing poetry and prose.
In early forties he came to Bombay, and in 1942 he joined the production house of Fazli Brothers. His first assignment was as the writer of advertisements and promotional material in Hindi, for the films produced by Fazli Brothers. His first song appeared in the film ‘Zabaan’ of 1943 – “Dheere Se Kadam Badhaata Chal, Bigdi Taqdeer Banaata Chal”, which was composed by C Ramchandra and sung by Ishwarlal and Kaushalya. His next song – “Soti Hun Ab Chanda Mujhe Jagaa Dena”, appeared 1944, in the film ‘Badi Baat’. The song was rendered by Amirbai under the direction of Feroze Nizami. This song became very popular in its time, and the name of its writer started getting known somewhat in the industry. getting known somewhat in the industry.”

Saraswati Kumar Deepak was not just a song writer of close to 350 songs for about 100 films. Besides that he had translated songs and dialogues for about 25 regional language films. He was also a screenplay writer. and a renowned author of literature for children. Books like ‘Haathi Ghoda Paalki’ and ‘Jai Janani, Jai Bharati’ became quite popular and famous. And above all, as a journalist, he continuously contributed stories and articles for newspapers and magazines.
He passed away in 1986, just a day after completing his 68th year.
