Today’s song is the final song from the movie ‘Savere Waali Gaadi’ (1985).
This movie was presented by AP Lulla under the banner of Suyog Films. RK Soral was the producer of this movie and it was directed by Bharathi Raja. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 17.09.1985. The cast of this movie has Sunny Deol, Poonam Dhillon, Prem Chopra, Bindu, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Om Shivpuri, Satyen Kappoo, CS Dubey, Kiran Vairale, Jankidas, Rakesh Bedi, Natasha Sinha, Roopalee, Ramlal, HL Pardesi, Dulari, Mahavir Rana, Parveen Sood, Mohit Kumar, SB Sharma, and Chandan, with Dharmendra in Special Appearance.
SB Sharma was the dialogue director of this movie while Chitra Laxman was the chief assistant director. David Dhawan was the editor for this film and dialogues of this movie were written by Rahi Masoom Raza.
‘Savere Waali Gaadi’ has five songs (including one two part song) penned by Majrooh Saab. Music for this movie was composed by RD Burman. The playback singers for this movie are Kishore Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar. Four songs from this movie have already been posted on this blog and today’s song is the final song from this movie.
Here is a brief about this movie taken from the internet:
Ravidas (Sunny Deol) lives in a village in rural India. He is the son of Chhediram (Dr. Shreeram Lagoo) who is highly respected in the village. Ravidas falls in love with Jyoti (Poonam Dhillon). Their love becomes known in the village. Because of differences of caste, the villagers are opposing to Ravidas marrying Jyoti. Chediram commits suicide due to the shame his son has brought upon him. Ravidas is a gifted poet, but he cannot fulfill his dream of being recognized as a great poet, with his poems being published and shown to the world, because he lives in a village. So he decides to go to the city to fulfill his dreams and to eventually marry Jyoti. In the city he recovers the purse of a young lady from a thief. The young lady turns out to be the daughter of a big newspaper publisher. The newspaper publisher hears of Ravidas’ talent for poetry through his daughter. He publishes some poems of Ravidas in a column in his newspaper. Ravidas starts becoming famous and his dream is fulfilled. He communicates to Jyoti by writing on the side of the morning express train, hence the title of the film ‘Savere Waali Gaadi’. Jyoti reads these messages each morning hoping for the time when Ravidas will return and take her away with him.
What is mentioned above is one part of the story that I had given in earlier posts posted here. I am adding the following text about the story, which is the other side of the story and which is the tragic side to the story that had unfortunate events happening in the story.
The two lovers eventually succeed to come together and leave the village. But not before a retired military man, who opposes the injustice happening around in the village, sacrifices his life to save the two lovers from the villagers. I have taken the following text from ‘wiki page’ and added the name of the artistes in the bracket there.
In the other side of the story we have Kishanlal (Prem Chopra), Jyoti’s brother in law, who lusts after her. He tries to pressurize the village council into letting him marry Jyoti, claiming he and his wife, Sukhdai (Jyoti’s older sister, played by actress Bindu), are unable to have children.
Major Sher Singh (Dharmendra), a retired military man and a staunch opponent of injustice, speaks out against Kishanlal. To save her marriage, Sukhdai begs Jyoti to accept Kishanlal’s proposal, leaving Jyoti devastated. Distraught, Jyoti scrawls a message for Ravi on the train with chalk, begging him to return. But a sudden rainstorm washes the message away before it reaches the city.
One evening, a torrential rainstorm—the likes of which the village hasn’t seen in 50 years—causes a flood. The village priest, or Pandit, claims the storm can only be stopped by performing a special ritual to appease the goddess. The ritual requires an unmarried girl to walk naked through the village at midnight, while all men must remain indoors. The girl is to be chosen by a lottery.
Major Sher Singh is furious at the suggestion but is ignored by the panicked villagers. Privately, a man named Gupta (Satyen Kappu) expresses concern to the Pandit (CS Dubey) that his daughter’s reputation would be ruined if she were chosen. The Pandit, a cunning man, seizes this opportunity and conspires against Jyoti. He rigs the lottery, ensuring her name is on every single slip of paper. As expected, Jyoti’s name is drawn, and she refuses to participate.
Suddenly, the rain stops on its own. The villagers rejoice, believing the goddess has been appeased simply by their intention to perform the ritual. Kishanlal suggests they cancel the ceremony, but the Pandit insists that if they don’t complete the ritual, the storm will return. The village women force Jyoti to agree for the good of the community.
In the city, Ravi, having confided in Rama (Natasha Sinha) about his love for Jyoti, decides it’s time to return. As he arrives in the village late that night, he sees Jyoti on the street, preparing for the ritual. Enraged, he runs to her, covering her with his clothes and shouting at the villagers. The village Sarpanch, orders the villagers to kill Ravi.
Ravi and Jyoti take refuge in a temple, and then flee towards the train station. They are cornered by the mob, but Major Sher Singh bravely intervenes, fighting off the villagers to buy them time. Tragically, he is killed in the struggle, a final sacrifice for their love. Ravi and Jyoti manage to board the train just in time, escaping the village forever. As the train pulls away, they embrace each other, finally free to live a happy new life together.
Today I am presenting the fifth and the final song from the movie which Ravidas (Sunny Deol) sings while keeping vigil on the crops on the farm of the Thakur (Om Shivpuri) of the village. Thakur gives this job to Ravidas on the request of this father Chhediram (Dr Shreeram Lagoo). Chhediram is always worried about Ravidas as he did not like to be a ‘barber’, like his father. Ravidas dreams of becoming a poet and singing his poetry. Chhediram especially tells Thakur that since his son is a poet and he often spends sleepless nights engrossed in writing poems, so he can be a good ‘watchman’ for his crops ready for harvesting. Thakur agrees to depute Ravidas to watch and protect his crops for three four days till harvesting is done. Here is the situation of this today’s song when Ravidas is on his job and keeping vigil there. He is unaware that some people who are thieves come around there in the fields in disguise of farmers. They have come with a plan to beat the watchman, cut the crops and flee with the grains. However one of them identifies Ravidas and tells his colleagues that he is a poet. So they change their plan of hitting him and instead they request him to sing something and during his performing they give him ‘नशे वाला पान’ (betel leaf mixed with narcoticsJ) to eat. And as expected Ravidas gets intoxicated during the performance and finally lay unconscious as the ‘thieves’ execute their job to perfection.
