Hullo Atuldom
‘Shabd’ (2005) was a psychological, art film produced by Pritish Nandy & his daughter Rangita Pritish Nandy with story, screenplay & direction by Leena Yadav. Leena’s husband Aseem Bajaj was the cinematographer of the film. The dialogue was by Sutapa Sikdar who’s husband was (late) Irfan Khan. Vishal (Dadlani) and Shekhar (Ravijani) were the music directors for songs written by Irshad Kamil & Vishal Dadlani. The film got good reviews but performed below expectations at the box office, despite being profitable. The story is adapted from the critically acclaimed Malayalam film ‘Rachana’ released in 1983.
The film is about Shaukat Vashisht (Sanjay Dutt), a Booker Prize-winning author, who suffers from a writer’s block, which disappoints his publishers. So, he decides to write a new book revolving around a character based on his wife, Antara (Aishwarya Rai) who is a lecturer. To this end, he began to observe her closely. He discovered that she has a secret admirer – a dashing young teacher named Yash Agnihotri (Zayed Khan) with a bright future ahead of him. Shaukat also realized that Antara had never mentioned Yash to him and had not told Yash that she was married.
Whatever Shaukat writes comes true. He begins to believe that he can alter the fates of Antara and Yash through his writing. According to his logic, Yash will kill himself once he finds out the truth about Antara. However, Antara soon finds out about this. She lies to him, telling him that Yash really did commit suicide, in order to disillusion him. Overwhelmed with guilt, Shaukat develops schizophrenia. The film ends on a disturbing note: Antara has Shaukat admitted to a mental health facility due to his condition.
Today, we are having a song from this film which show Shaukat (Sanjay Dutt, who turned a year older on 29th July) speaking of the characters he is writing. He thinks that Yash (Zayed Khan who had his birthday on 5th July) is wooing Anatara. I found this song interesting enough as it has three July born artists associated with it.
(1) Zayed Khan (5th July, 1980), son of yesteryear Hindi film actor Sanjay Khan and interior designer-food writer Zarine Khan (née Katrak). He has three sisters, one of who was the wife of Hrithik Roshan. Zayed Khan is nephew of style icon/actor Feroz Khan & Akhbar Khan and first cousin of actor Fardeen Khan (son of Feroz Khan). He was active in films from 2003-2018.
(2) Sanjay Dutt (29th July, 1959), son of Hindi film legends Nargis & Sunil Dutt. He is the nephew of character actor Anwar Hussain, Nargis’s half-brother. Sanjay Dutt has two sisters, Priya Dutt, a politician, and Namrata Dutt, who is married to actor Kumar Gaurav, the son of actor Rajendra Kumar.
Sanju Baba (as Sanjay Dutt is fondly addressed in the industry) made his acting debut as a child, playing a qawwali singer in his father’s film ‘Reshma Aur Shera’. His first film as an adult was ‘Rocky’ in 1981, unfortunately, his mother was not there to see him on screen.
(3) Sonu Nigam, another July-born (30th July, 1973) is the voice in this song for Zayed Khan.
Sonu Nigam was born to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam in the city of Faridabad, Haryana. He has two sisters. Sonu began singing at the age of four, when he joined his father Agam Kumar Nigam on stage to sing Mohammed Rafi’s song “Kya Hua Tera Wada“. Nigam began accompanying his father on his singing appearances at weddings and parties. He moved to Mumbai with his father to begin his Bollywood singing career at the age of 19. He was trained by Hindustani classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana.
Sonu Nigam made his debut in early 1990s, initially overshadowed by Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. His first song for a film was “O Aasmanwale Zameen Par Utar Ke Dekh” from ‘Aaja Meri Jaan’ (1993). He gained recognition with TV serial song “Hum To Chhaila Ban Gaye” from ‘Talash’ (1992) and later for songs “Accha Sila Diya” (Bewafa Sanam), “Sandese Aate Hai” (Border), and “Yeh Dil Deewana” (Pardes). His album Deewana (1999) became popular.
Sonu Nigam is a huge bhakt (devotee)/fan of legendary Mohd Rafi.
Sonu is considered one of the most versatile singers in India, with a wide vocal range. His performances include a wide range of genres, like classical music, devotional music, ghazals, qawwali, rock and pop music, among others. He sings predominantly in Hindi and Kannada language films. Plus, he has sung in a number of other languages, both Indian & International. He has been a host on a few reality shows on television & stage shows. He has appeared as a child actor in a few films in the 1980s as well as in cameos & full length roles in a film or two on growing up.
Sonu Nigam has been awarded one National Film Award, two Filmfare Awards and two Filmfare Awards South and four IIFA Awards for Best Playback Singer. He was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2022.
