“Oy Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” in the voice of Asha Bhosle is written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal for the film ‘Badlaa’ (1974).
‘Badlaa’ was produced by R.C. Kumar for Century Films, Bombay. It was directed by Vijay, who also wrote this movie. It had Shatrughan Sinha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Ajit, Johny Walker, supported by Padma Khanna, Alka, Shetty, Mohan Choti, Maruti, Bhagwan, Keshav Rana, Ram Mohan, Sabina, Mohan Sherry, Kamal Deep, Mac Mohan, V Gopal, Johny Bakshi, Desh, CS Dubey and Mehmood. Nirupa Roy, Arun Irani, Anwar Hussain, Paintal, Sujit Kumar, Shyama, Madan Puri, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Iftikhar, Sudhir, Raj Mehra, Randhir, Jayshree T, Meena T, Shefali and Kajal make guest appearances in this movie

“Oy Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” is one of those delightful Asha Bhosle songs that has remained largely overlooked despite its many merits. Although it never attained the popularity of the era’s biggest hits, it stands out as a finely crafted composition by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, with evocative lyrics by Anand Bakshi.
The song is steeped in the flavour of North Indian wedding folk music. Rather than relying on lavish orchestration, Laxmikant Pyarelal create an intimate and festive atmosphere through spirited dholak rhythms, graceful shehnai passages, and charming folk-inspired melodies. The tune is instantly engaging, carrying the warmth and familiarity of a traditional wedding song while remaining an original film composition.
Asha Bhosle’s performance is the song’s crowning glory. She effortlessly conveys a delightful blend of innocence, coyness, playful teasing, feigned reluctance, and quiet anticipation. Her expressive singing lends the song a natural charm, especially in the recurring refrain, “Oy Chori Chori Chupke Chupke,” where she shifts seamlessly between bashfulness and exuberance.
Anand Bakshi’s lyrics draw upon the timeless theme of a young bride who jokingly complains that her marriage has been arranged without her consent. Although this subject has appeared in numerous Hindi film songs, Bakshi’s conversational style, wit, and light-hearted touch keep the lyrics fresh and engaging rather than formulaic.

Viewed today, however, “Oy Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” is a rewarding rediscovery. It exemplifies Laxmikant Pyarelal’s remarkable ability to compose memorable folk-inspired melodies with apparent ease, while also highlighting a facet of Asha Bhosle’s artistry that is sometimes eclipsed by her celebrated cabaret numbers and sophisticated romantic songs. It remains a charming and thoroughly enjoyable example of the musical richness hidden within many lesser-known Hindi film soundtracks of the 1970s.
