Today’s song is the last and final song from the social film Heeralal Pannalal-1978.
The film, made by Rishi Art productions, Bombay, was directed by Ashok Roy and the Music was by R.D.Burman (Asstt: Sapan Chakravarty). The cast of the film included Shashi kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Randheer Kapoor, Nitu Singh, Asrani, Premnath, Ajit, Amjad khan, Ramesh Deo, Leela Mishra, Ratnamala and a loooong list of artists.
1978 was a significant year for the cinema industry for various reasons. The I & B Minister Mr. Advani changed the rules of the Censor Board. he declared that now onwards, the Censor will object only to films not following the Constitutional principles of personal freedom. This meant that the Government, Ministers and the other Govt. employees could be justifiably criticised in a film without Censor Bojection. This was a great freedom bestowed on the filmmakers.
1978 was also called the year of ” A ” Certificates to films. As many as 18 films out of the 115 films released in the year got the ‘A” certificate. Southern movies like Alinganam, Her Nights, Sexy Dreams, Mann ka Aangan, Rati Nivedanam etc were in the lead.
This year Amitabh Bachchan continued to be the audience attraction and the most viewed actor. His films like Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Ganga ki Saugandh, Trishul and Don excelled at the Box office. Main tulsi tere aangan ki was an unexpected Hit film. Out of the dozens of films directed by Dev Anand, this year Des pardes was successful. Incidentally, this was the last film with Dev Anand as a Hero that was successful.
The success of Chopra’s Pati,Patni aur Woh was a shock to all, so was Rekha’s Ghar. Satyam Shivam Sundaram was not as per expectations. Parallel Cinema like Gaman, Junoon and Arvind Desai ki ajjeb kahani did reasonably well. Cinema Cinema was a novelty. It showed pieces from 200 films, from 1913 to 1978.
National film awards were doubled in cash awards to Rs. 40,000. The number of awards also increased to 64. A Postage stamp was issued on Charlie Chaplin.Pankaj Mullick and Dhiren Ganguly expired in 1978.
Film Heeralal Pannalal-1978 was the usual story of Lost and Found, but the writer Rajiv Kaul had woven so many complications, misunderstandings and coincidences that after a while the average viewer stopped guessing and understanding the story and saw the rest of the film helplessly. Madame Memsaab has written a humorous and funny review of this film, which is quite lengthy and succeeds in confusing the reader- just like its audience in the theatre. However, for you, here is a short synopsis of this film…..
The film starts with two innocent and kind-hearted guys named Heeralal (Shashi Kapoor) and Pannalal (Randheer Kapoor). They are famous among criminals as they have helped police in capturing them several times. Heeralal is in search of his parents’ killer, but is unaware of his identity. Pannalal is in search of his father. Heeralal meets with a girl named Ruby (Zeenat Aman) and falls in love with her. Pannalal falls in love with Ruby’s friend, Neelam (Neetu Singh).
Kalicharan (Ajit), who is a renowned criminal, has decided to teach a lesson to Heeralal and Pannalal for interfering in their business. But instead Kalicharan is forced to run from the police. Police Commissioner, Premlal (Premnath) is very happy with the guys and wants to protect them from Kalicharan and his friend, Panther. They find that Kalicharan was the one who killed Heeralal’s parents, but surprisingly, Kalicharan is none other than Pannalal’s father.
Heeralal and Pannalal rescue the people who were caught in a fire. In the end, Heeralal-Ruby and Pannalal-Neelam unite.
Writers on old film history usually focus on Heroes, Heroines. MDs, and Directors. Rarely a Comedian is given a detailed exposure.Today, we will look into the life and career of one of my favourite comedians – Asrani.
Govardhan Asrani (born 1 January 1941) popularly known simply as Asrani, is an Indian actor and director whose Bollywood career has spanned five decades. He has acted in over 350 Hindi films. Asrani has played the lead hero, character roles, comedic roles and supporting roles. He is best known for his role in Sholay as a jailer.
Asrani was born in a middle class Sindhi family. His father migrated to Jaipur after the Partition of India and opened a shop selling carpets. He has four sisters and three brothers: two older and one younger. Asrani was highly uninterested in business and very weak in mathematics. He completed his matriculation from St. Xaviers School and did his graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. He simultaneously worked as a voice artist on All India Radio, Jaipur, to pay for his education. His ultimate aim was to become an actor.
He began to learn acting from Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar from 1960 to 1962. In 1962, he traveled to Bombay and began to seek opportunities to act. In 1963, Hrishikesh Mukherjee advised him to learn acting professionally. In 1964 Asrani joined the Film Institute in Poona (now Film and Television Institute of India, Pune) and finished his course in 1966. He impressed many others and made his acting break in 1967 with a Gujarati movie opposite budding actress Waheeda (not Waheeda Rahman, the Hindi actress). He acted in four other movies, mainly as actor or supporting actor in Gujrati from 1967 to 1969. His debut film in Hindi was Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiyaan where he appeared as Biswajeet’s friend. He acted in Khoon Pasina, marking a serious role other than comedy. It was from 1971 that he started getting more offers as the main comedian in films or as the close friend of the lead actor. He did 96 movies from 1972-79.Directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Atma Ram, Gulzar repeatedly cast him in the period 1971-1974 and his work got noticed through these films as they were hits. These roles he did from 1971-1974 set the tone for a number of supporting and comic roles in his career and in 70’s his demand was at its peak as he appeared in 101 films from 1970-1979 and had effective roles in them.He was hugely talked about in the 1970s and is one of Rajesh Khanna’s close friends.He worked with Rajesh Khanna in 25 films which includes 21 hit films.
In the 1980s, he acted in over 107 films. Unlike his roles in 1970-84 which were pivotal to the plot, most of his roles from 1985-1993 were very minor mainly because the concept of a comedian was getting phased out and heroes preferred to do their own comedy and action films were ruling the roost in the period 1985-1994. Simultaneously he kept working in Gujrathi films in 70’s, 80’s as lead hero and achieved success as the lead protagonist in Amdavad No Rikshawalo, Saat Qaidi, Sansar Chakra, Pankhi No Malo, Jugal Jodi, Maa Baap, Chel Chabilo Gujarati. From the 90’s he played as comedian or supporting actor in Gujrathi films like Mota Ghar Ni Vahu, Piyu Gayo Pardesh, Baap Dhamaal Dikra. During this period in 1982, he set up a small Gujrati production company with fellow artistes Dinesh Hingoo, Harish Patel and Salim Parvez (son of famous supporting actor Yunus Parvez). The company dissolved in 1996 with a large profit. Asrani also invested mainly in cloth and acted as investor for other actors, until 1991 when he lost a lot of money. From 1988 to 1993, he was a director for the Film Institute in Pune. In the 90’s he did only 73 Hindi movies due to lack of good scope for him to perform. Muqabla (1993) saw him in a serious role after a long time. D.Rama Naidu gave him a pivotal role to Asrani in Taqdeerwala in 1995 and once again comedy movies were being made from thereon . Asrani started getting good roles in films directed by David Dhawan and Priyadarshan from 1993 till 2012. The 2000s saw Asrani in a number of blockbuster films like Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, Hulchul and Deewane Huye Paagal. He appeared in a serious role in Kyun Ki. He was an integral part of comedies by Sajid Nadiadwala, Priyadarshan after 2000. His screen space in films of Rohit Shetty and others has got reduced gradually after 2009.
He was married to actress Manju (Bansal) Asrani, with whom he fell in love working together in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Tapasya. In Aaj Ki Taza Khabar, Asrani played as Champak Boomia / Amit Desai and Manju played the role of Kesari Desai and for this role Asrani won Filmfare Award for Best Comedian. Later the couple acted in Hum Nahin Sudhrenge, a home production directed by Asrani in 1980. His son Naveen Asrani is a dentist in Ahmedabad. Asrani died on 20-10-2025.
