‘Mr. India’ (1987) was produced by Surinder Kapoor & Boney Kapoor under the banner of Narsimha Enterprises. The science- fiction-superhero film was directed by Shekhar Kapur with story & screenplay written by the duo Salim–Javed; in what was their last collaboration before their split.
Starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Amrish Puri, the film tells the story of Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor), a humble violinist and philanthropist who receives a cloaking device that provides invisibility. While renting out his house to pay his debts, he meets a journalist Seema Sahni (Sridevi) and falls in love with her.
Mogambo (Amrish Puri) is a criminal with a private army and a goal to conquer India. From his hidden island, he monitors all the crimes perpetrated by his henchmen to destabilise India. He has complete loyalty of his army who acknowledge him with the phrase “Hail Mogambo!”. Mogambo, is also seen as ill tempered and his entire staff is mostly relieved when he says “Mogambo khush hua” (Hindi for “Mogambo is happy”).
The interaction between Mogambo and his henchmen in the “Hail Mogambo!” – “Mogambo Khush hua!” scenes are more smile or laugh provoking than scary. Mogambo is scary only for his henchmen – especially Daga (Sharat Saxena) & Teja (Ajit Vachani whose birth anniversary was on 10th August).
Mogambo’s ultimate aim is to get the device, that would turn people invisible, which he thinks, will help him conquer India and the rest of the world very easily.
The film, further, has Mogambo trying to wrest the cloaking device from the invisible Mr. India. He is unaware that Arun Verma and Mr. India are the same person; what he does know is that Mr. India is particularly benevolent towards Arun Verma & the orphans who he is sheltering. Hence, Arun, Seema, Calendar (Satish Kaushik), the children at the shelter are abducted by Mogambo’s men; brought to his secret hideout on the remote island. Arun admits to being Mr. India when Mogambo threatens to kill two of the children; but because Arun has lost the device, accidentally dropping it somewhere during the capture, he cannot become invisible to prove himself.
Before I proceed with the story of the film, I should mention that Mogambo has some kind of ‘Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles’; ready to be used in a way that it can destroy entire cities.
In the climax, Arun confronts Mogambo, the two fight, and Arun gains an upper hand. But as he is about to stop the missiles, Mogambo warns that the missiles have been fuelled and if he stops them now they will fail to launch and blow the island up . Nevertheless, Arun deactivates the launch, and the missiles detonate on the launch pad. Arun, Seema, Calendar, and the children escape; Mogambo’s fortress is destroyed, and Mogambo dies. It is later shown, in an epilogue, that Mr. India is being felicitated and all the children, Arun and Seema are at the ceremony.
Bob Christo, Harish Patel, Yunus Parvez, Gurbachan Singh were the main actors in the supporting cast with Annu Kapoor, Ramesh Deo, Ashok Kumar, Siddharth Kak and Anjan Shrivastav in guest appearances. Aftab Shivdasani, Tapan Shah, Venus Pujari, Karan Nath, Ahmed Khan, Huzaan Khodaiji, were some of the child actors. (Some of these child stars have since, graduated to donning adult characters; Ahmed Khan has become a choreographer & film-director.)
I have seen this film many times, and still love to see it for the expressions of all the actors including the children & Mogambo’s eye rolling and deep-voiced “Mogambo Khush Hua”. The songs are another reason for which I love the film. There were seven songs in the film that were written by Javed Akhtar. Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music directors who used Kishore Kumar, Alisha Chinai, Kavita krishnamurthy, Shabbir Kumar & Anuradha Paudwal as playback singers. The last song appears three times in the film. 1st time when Arun Verma and the kids are introduced with the happy version of the song. 2nd time, in a sad mood, when Arun realises that he is unable to find resources to feed the children and the oldest girl in the group breaks into the song. Finally, the song comes (again in a sad mood) when the youngest girl (Tina-Huzaan Khodaiji) dies and she is being given a farewell. The two sad versions were posted on the blog as part of the comments in that post. Today, we come to the last song from ‘Mr India’ on the occasion of the birth anniversary the beautiful charming heroine of this film She was a delight to watch in whatever costume she was given to wear. She was a delight to watch enacting any type of role. She was a delight to watch when she followed the instructions of the choreographer.
I am at a loss on what to write about her that her fans are unaware of. Everyone knows that she began her acting career at the tender age of 4. She had acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada & Malayalam before playing Lakshmi’s sister in ‘Julie’ (1975). She appeared in 63 movies in Hindi; 62 in Telugu; 58 in Tamil; and 21 in Malyalam – in a career that has spanned from 1967 through to 2007.
Sridevi established strong onscreen pair with Kamal Hasan in Tamil films (27 Hindi and Tamil put together) and then with Jeetendra in 16 to 18 which helped her get foothold in Hindi films. Her pairing with Rajnikanth was in 19 films (including films in all languages). Anil Kapoor was her co-actor in 13-15 films including those where she was the romantic pair for another male actor. Don’t know why, but she was cast alongside Amitabh Bachchan in only three films; though Amitabh did have a cameo appearance in Sridevi’s comeback film “English Vinglish” in 2012.
Sridevi and Jaya Prada; who were projected as competitors by the magazines in the 1980s & 90s, acted together in about 13 films in total—appearing in 9 Hindi films and 4 Telugu films during the 1980s and early 1990s, often as a celebrated on-screen duo alongside actor Jeetendra. Interesting, isn’t it?
Post marriage and motherhood she was seen in a television series in a satellite channel, the serial was her own production. She was also a producer for a few films in that period. She was awarded the National award for the best actress for her role in ‘MOM’ in 2018 (posthumously). She was the recipient of the Padma Shri in 2013.
Let us see this brilliant actress – the dancing shahzaadiI in this song with Anil Kapoor from ‘Mr. India’ which was choreographed by Saroj Khan. The song was in the voices of Kavita Krishnamurthy and Kishore Kumar. It is filmed on the beaches of Mumbai -Madh Island. I love the way Sridevi reacts when the sand enters her eyes & the waves come chasing. Wasn’t she looking like the typical girl-next-door in the white jeans and yellow baggy T-Shirt; the combination was copied by all college-goers of that period.
This film released in May of 1987, when Kishore Kumar was at his peak. The way he plays with the sound ‘ra’ when he sings ‘Mister’, ‘Maahir’ etc. Difficult to decide, why I love the song – because of the singer, actress, lyrics or whole of it
