Today’s song is from a social film which is not remembered by anyone today…. Deep jalta Rahe-1959. This is the last and final song from this film to feature here.

The film was made by the famous Filmistan Studio. It was directed by a very successful director Datta aka Dada Dharmadhikari and the film had music by a very talented and famous Music Director Roshan The star cast was Abhi Bhattacharya, Randhir, Manju, Ranjana aka Ranjana Shukla, Sabita Chaterjee, Ram Avtar, Badri prasad, Mirajkar, Vithaldas Panchotia and many others.

Despite all these favourable factors, the film still failed. This was because of its poor, outdated story. Let us have a look at the film’s story first…..

Dhanraj (Badriprashad),the Zamindar of Dhanpur had 2 sons. Jeevan(Randhir) who was his real son and Ashok(Abhi Bhattacharya) was an adopted child. Ashok was very good natured, cultured and obedient, whereas Jeevan was very arrogant and a spoiled boy. Dhanraj loved Ashok, which irritated Jeevan and he hated Ashok. Ashok loved Mala(Manju) and they wanted to get married. Ashok passed with merit and Dhanraj sent him to London for higher studies. Now Jeevan was alone and so started behaving uncontrollably. Seeing this and after an altercation with Jeevan, Dhanraj dies. Jeevan starts troubling Manju for marrying him. Ashok did not know anything. He sends a letter that he needs 5000 rupees for eye treatment lest he will become blind. With this letter Jeevan blackmails Mala to marry him. To save Ashok’s eyes she marries Jeevan, who ill-treats her.

When Ashok returns, he is a pauper now and Mala is also married to Jeevan. He goes away to Bombay to earn money. He comes to know that Dhanraj haveli is getting auctioned. He comes and buys the Haveli. Mala dies in his presence and hands over her son Raju to him.

Now Jeevan starts blackmailing Ashok for money, threatening to take away Raju, whom Ashok loves very much.

The rest of the story details how Jeevan is involved in a murder case and is jailed for life. He repents before going to jail and requests Ashok to never tell Raju that his father was Jeevan.

Now, let’s take a look at the film scene of 1959 in Hindi cinema….While entertainers like Dil Deke Dekho, Anadi, Love marriage, Bazigar, Bank manager, Bhai behan, Chhoti behen, Black cat, C I D Girl, Chacha Zindabad, Chandrasena, Circus queen, Commander, Didi, Do Gunde, Do Ustaad, Dr. Z, Fashionable wife, Guest house, Jaal saaz, Kali topi laal rumaal, Kanhaiya, Paigham, Qaidi No.911, Satta Bazar, School master, Shararat, Heera Moti, Navrang, Do behnen, Mohar, Minister, Kangan, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Madame XYZ came to entertain people, some specialised films too were made. Historicals like Tipu Sultan and Samrat Prithwiraj Chauhan were made. As usual, mythology was there too.

V. Shantaram, after 5 years, once again tried his hand successfully at making a film based on Dancing. Navrang not only had excellent Dances, but C.Ramchandra created his magic- albeit sans Lata-this time with Asha Bhosale. Guru Dutt’s dream film “Kagaz ke Phool” was a failure, just like Raj Kapoor’s dream film “Mera Naam Joker” a few years hence. Both films were prestigious films for these ace film makers and they had staked their own for these movies. The failure of these movies at the box office shattered their makers to the core. But such is the fickleness of the Indian audience !

Bimal Roy had his special touch in Sujata and Hrishikesh Mukherjee equalled his mentor with Anadi. B R Chopra made Dhool ka Phool discussing premarital pregnancy and the upbringing of a Hindu baby by a kind Muslim family. ( This same theme was stretched to another level, by him, 2 years later with Dharmaputra-61).

Social issues were touched in Paigham( owner vs. workers), Heera Moti (farmer’s problems), Satta Bazar ( ills of gambling). Khwaja Ahmed Abbas showed his ‘never say die’ spirit by making “chaar dil char rahen”, which as expected flopped despite good cast. S Mukherjee, Usha Khanna and Shammi Kpoor weaved magic with Dil Deke Dekho, which became a trend setter for Nasir Hussain and directors of his ilk, in the coming years. Goonj Uthhi Shehnai had music by the old stalwart Vasant Desai who proved to be as good as new !

The mid 50’s onwards the period was when the people looked at the films as entertainment with lilting music. This film had neither of these. Perhaps the makers forgot that films with a tragic end, separation of lovers and a weak story by current standards was not accepted by the audience.

Gone were the days of Saigal and Dilip Kumar when the lead actor/actress died at the end, the lovers broke their hearts and the audience clapped and the films were successful. If you compare today’s film’s story and the variety of films made in 1959, you will realise why this film failed despite all the backing it had from the studio, director, the cast and the MD. The story and s/p was by the noted Marathi Dramatist and a writer of repute Mr. Kalelkar. Dialogues were by Sarshar Sailani, whose real name was Bhimsen. The Lyricists were Shailendra and Rahil Gorakhpuri.

There is interesting information about Rahil Gorakhpuri……During the mid 60’s i.e. from 1964 to 1968, there were 8 Hindi films, for which ” Javed Anwar” was the Lyricist. For a long time, no one knew who this Javed Anwar was and how he suddenly appeared and disappeared , like a Comet. Finally, it was proved that Javed was the pseudonym of Manohar Lal Khanna and Anwar was the other Lyricist Rahil Gorakhpuri. ( ref. www.hamkadam.in). Rahil Gorakhpuri had written lyrics independently in his own name since 1958. But Manoharlal Khanna had never revealed this fact.

This Rahil Gorakhpuri wrote lyrics for…. Sun to le haseena’-58, Deep jalta rahe-59, Ek armaan mera-59, Maine jeena seekh liya-58, Tipu Sultan-59, Mahlon ke khwaab-60, Hum bhi kuch kam nahin-58 etc etc.

As a pair, Javed Anwar wrote Lyrics in Shabnam-64, Awara Badal-64, Nishan-65, Dilruba-67, Fareb-68,Main hoon Alladin-66, Alibaba and 40 thieves-66 and Trip to the moon-67.

One of the members in the cast is Ram Avatar. Ram Avtar Pandey was born on 11-11-1911, at Rampur-UP. He started his filmi career in 1938 with character roles in film Baagban-1938. In the early 50s, he switched to comedy, when he gained weight and a pot belly. Ram Avtar was a fixture in many Nasir Hussain films. His roles in Badi Behan-49,Nagin-54,Hum sub chor hain-56,Tumsa nahin dekha-57,jab pyar kisi se hota hai-61, Phir vohi dil laya hoon-63, Teesri Manzil-67, Yaadon ki Baraat etc are memorable. I like his role in film Teesri Manzil-1967. His last film was Prem Geet-1981. His last released film, however, was Love and God-1986. He acted in 133 Hindi films. He died in 1998.

The Hero was Abhi Bhattacharya. Abhi Bhattacharya ( 20/11/1922-11/9/1993) had a handsome and impressive personality. Belonging to the Bimal Roy camp, he debuted in 1947 with film Naukadubi from Bombay Talkies- a Bengali dominated production house.

Some of his other notable films were Yatrik-52, Jagriti-54, Biraj Bahu-54, Anuradha-60, Aradhana-69, Seeta aur Geeta-72 etc etc. He worked with stalwarts like Bimal Roy, Satyen Bose, Nitin Bose,Guru Dutt, Ritwik Ghatak etc. In the later part of career he worked as Lord Vishnu and Lord Shrikrishna in many Mythological films.

He wrote one book too,”Destiny with Dadaji”. He acted in 166 films. His last film was ‘Professor ki padosan’-93. He died on 11-9-1993.

Here is the last and final song from this film. It is sung by Asha bhosle. With this song, all songs are covered and the film is YIPPEED ! Enjoy the song….
