‘Jungal Mein Mangal’ (1972) was produced and directed by Rajendra Bhatia. The cast included Pran, Kiran Kumar, Reena Roy, Sonia Sahni, Chandrashekhar, Gulshan Bawra, Jagdish Raj, Upendra Trivedi, Arvind Trivedi, Paintal, V. Gopal, Chaman Puri, Bharat Kapoor, Birbal, Krishan Dhawan, Jayshree T., Padma Khanna, Meena T., Meena Rai, Narendra Nath, Balraj Sahni, Pardesi, Hari Yogesh, Shashi Kiran, Ashok Thanki, Bhanumati, Rajni Gupta, Chandabai, Uma Khosla etc. The film was a remake of the Malayalam film, ‘Rest House’ (1969). The outdoor shooting of the film was majorly done in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala.
The film is a romantic comedy which turns into a crime thriller towards the end. Two groups of students – one all male students led by a woman-hating retired Colonel and other all-female students led by a strict, man-hating lady biology professor converge in a same wild life sanctuary and stay in the Government Rest House. There are conflicts as well as romance between two groups leading to some comedy. However, after the mysterious death of one student each from the group, both groups unite to solve the mystery of their colleagues’ death. The film is a good ‘time pass’ entertainer in which Pran has a double role as the retired colonel as well as an effeminate student.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
A group of nine female students led by a man-hater, Lakshmi, the professor of Botany and Sister Sophia (Meena Rai) arrives at the Govt. rest house of a wild life sanctuary for a field study. The female students include Leela (Reena Roy), Saroj (Jayshree T) and Lata (Meena T). Totaram (Paintal), the caretaker of the rest house welcomes the female group. Lakshmi makes it sure that there is no male guests at the rest house. However, the caretaker says that it is not in his control if male guests arrive.
After settling down in the rest house, the female group comes across a male group led by woman-hater, retired Colonel, M K Das (Pran) who is conducting the marching drill of his male students in the rest house premises. His students include Rajesh (Kiran Kumar), Baldev (Narendranath), Raghu (Pran in double role) and Lalu (Gulshan Bawra) among others. This is the first interactions between the two groups albeit from a distance. Both male and female students are happy to see each other to break the monotony in the forest.
The rest house has a common area of bathrooms which becomes an unintended encounter between the students of both the groups. At one time, both Colonel Das and Professor Lakshmi find themselves together in the same bathroom resulting in some hilarious situations. Professor Lakshmi decides to leave the rest house with her students as she does not like to live along with male students. Ratanlal (Krishan Dhawan), a government officer, arranges their stay in a bungalow of the Chhote Thakur (Upendra Trivedi) who recognises Sister Sophia whose father, Thomas (Balraj Sahni) was working with Senior Thakur to excavate the ancient temple and treasure before his death. A boatman (Chandrashekhar) reveals to Professor Lakshmi that the bungalow is haunted by the ghost of the Senior Thakur the elder brother of Chhote Thakur who got killed in the bungalow.
It transpires that it was Chhote Thakur who had killed his elder brother for his plan to handover the excavated temple with secret treasure to the villagers. After he was killed, Thomas has been confined to the prison by Chhote Sarkar as he knows the location of the secret treasure. He refuses to divulge the location as he feels that the temple with treasure belongs to the villagers. The new manager (Arvind Trivedi) of Chhote Thakur puts a bait to Thomas to reveal the location by way of arranging the meeting with his daughter Sophia who is under the impression that her father has committed suicide.
With so much of the background about the haunted bungalow, Professor Lakshmi decides to continue to stay in the government rest house. The boys and girls are happy. Rajesh and Leela, Baldev and Jayshree T and Raghu with Lata among others form the love pairs while Colonel Das and Professor Lakshmi are still at logger head with each other until they accidentally unite while Lakshmi encounters a snake in the forest and Colonel Das saves her.
The story take a turn when a tribal woman is mysteriously gets killed when she was carrying a water pot. A stolen idol is found inside the broken water pot. So, some smuggling racket is going on and the villagers are in danger of losing their claim on the temple and secret treasure. Inspector (Bharat Kapoor) is investigating the death of a tribal girls who worked as a maid with Chhote Thakur. He meets Chhote Thakur. It also appears to students that Ratanlal is completely under the control of Chhote Thakur and the smuggling racket is operated within the vicinity of the bungalow with the implicit knowledge of Ratanlal.
To terrorise the police as well as the forest guests, a character of ‘ghost’ is introduced so that people, by and large, remain away from the place of the smuggling activities which is the temple and secret treasure. This is apparently happening with the involvement of Chhote Thakur and his gang. When Sophia goes to a graveyard, she inadvertently goes to an area guarded by the criminals of smuggling activities. The ‘ghost’ kills her to create fear among others not to venture into their prohibhited area. When Lalu is on his way to report to the police station about the murder of Sister Sophia, he is also killed by the ‘ghost’.
These two back-to-back murders of the students unites the male and female student groups to set aside their rivalry and actively work together to unmask the real human culprits behind the ‘ghost’. The students led by Rajesh and Raghu do not believe in the theory of ‘ghost’. Instead, they believe that it is the handwork of Chhote Thakur in connivance with Ratanlal to cover up their smuggling activities of artifacts from the temple. Rajesh and Raghu involve the local villagers to whom the temple with its secret treasure belongs. This leads to a massive villagers’ agitation against Chhote Thakur and his gang.
In the climax, Rajesh, Baldev, Raghu with the help of the boatman who turns out to be a CID officer in disguise unmask the ‘ghost’ who turns out to be a henchman of Chhote Thakur for carrying out the smuggling activities. Chhota Thakur and his manager has kidnapped Lakshmi and have escaped on the speed boat to look for the secret treasure. Students with the CBI officer chase them in another boat and overpower them. Lakshmi is released from the kidnappers and Chhote Thakur and his manager are handed over to the police. The temple with its treasure of artifacts are restored to the villagers. Colonel Das and Professor Lakshmi unites as they no longer hates the opposite gender. So is also the girl and boy students of both the groups.
The film had seven songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri-Neeraj which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I present and 7th and the last song, ‘meri nazron ne kaise kaise kaam kar diye’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Padma Khanna as a mujra dance song.
The context of the song is that Ratanlal (Krishan Dhawan), the Government officer entrusted with restoring the excavated temple with its costly artifacts to the villagers turns out to be under the control of Chhota Thakur (Upendra Trivedi) and his manager (Arvind Trivedi) who are smugglers of the temple’s costly artifacts. As a reward for the good services rendered by Ratanlal, Chhote Thakur has invited him to join mujra dance of Padma Khanna arranged by him.
