Today’s song is from a Tragedy social film- Darpan-1970.
The film was made by Balan Movies Combine, Bombay. It had music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the songs written by Anand Bakshi. The film was directed by A. Subba Rao.
Adurthi Subba Rao (16-12-1922 t0 1-10-1975) was a very successful director, primarily in Telugu cinema. He directed 27 Telugu, 11 Hindi and 5 Tamil films. He has won 7 National awards and 3 Nandi awards of the Andhra Pradesh Government, for Telugu films.
Subba Rao made his Debut as an Assistant Director for Uday Shankar’s Hindi film ” Kalpana”-1948. He directed 10 more Hindi films, namely Milan-67, Man ka Meet-69, Doli-69, Darpan-70, Mastana-70, Rakhwala-71, Jeet-72, Jwar Bhata-73, Insaf-73 and Sunehra Sansar-75.
In his life his First and Last films were Hindi films ! His most popular film in Hindi was Milan-1967, which was a remake of his Telugu Hit film Mooga Manasulu-1963.
Like most South Indian directors doing work in Hindi cinema, he too did remakes of his Hit Telugu films into Hindi and Tamil. Today’s film Darpan-1970 was also a remake of – not a Telugu film – but a remake of a Hit Malayalam film- Agniputhri-1967. It was an award winning Malayalam film directed by M.Krishnan Nair. The story and screenplay of the film Darpan-1970 was written by the same S.L.Puram Sadanandam, who had written for the original Malayalam film Agniputhri-1967.
The cast of the film Darpan-1970 was Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Sonia Sahni, Jagdeep, Sulochana Latkar, Lalita Pawar, Achla Sachdev, Seema Deo, Shammi, Ramesh Deo, Mukri, Sunder and many others.
The story of the film Darpan-1970 was ….
Waheeda Rehman is the wronged woman, who has finally taken refuge in an ‘Anaath Ashram’ after losing her mother and her respect in society for being an unwed mother. She is treated as fair game by men in society who consider her to be a characterless woman.
In the ‘Ashram’ Waheeda Rehman is content, but Sunil Dutt turns up in her life and falls in love with her. She is not willing to taint his life with her past, but Sunil Dutt is persistent and finally persuaded by the well wishers at the Anath Ashram and seeing Sunil Dutt’s devotion, she marries him. Here her troubles start and the past comes back to haunt her. Sunil Dutt’s elder brother Rehman is a doctor, the same who was treating Waheeda Rehman’s mother and who is also the father of her child. Rehman was already married to Seema Deo and was childless, so he adopted the girl. But no one knows that she is his real daughter.
Now Waheeda has to stay in the same house with her husband and his brother’s family, who is the father of her child. She is unable to disclose this to Sunil Dutt. Then Sunil Dutt’s close friend who has been abroad, comes back after many years to see him. This friend is Ramesh Deo, who is also one of those who tried to take advantage of Waheeda Rehman when she was working in his office.
Finally, the truth is out and Sunil Dutt is devastated. He still believes in Waheeda Rehman and wants to leave home forever. In the end, one of them has to die and Waheeda Rehman takes her own life to solve the quagmire.
As discussed recently, the year 1970 had a load of entertaining and musical films and all major actors like Raj, Dilip, Dev, Rajesh khanna etc had their films released in this year. In such a situation, a tragedy film, in which the heroine dies was not a choice for the discerning audience. The film did not do well at the Box office, though it was not a total flop film. Even none of the songs was popular.
One of the major roles of this film was done by actor Rehman. He was one of the rare actors who kept aloof from Cine parties and celebrations. He had only 3 friends in the industry- Guru Dutt, Johnny Walker and Abrar Alvi. After their death, he led an isolated life till his end. That is why there is not much written about him. Let’s take a quick look at his life in a short note….
Sai’d Rehman Khan was born on 23 June 1921 at Lahore, British India, now Pakistan, in a Pashtun-origin family. He graduated from Robertson College, Jabalpur, staying in Beohar Niwas Palace. Among his nephews are prominent Pakistani film and TV actor Faisal Rehman and Fasih Ur Rehman, Indian classical dancer, and sons of his younger brother Massud-ur-Rehman, the famous cinematographer in Pakistan.
After college (1942), he joined the Royal Indian Air Force and trained at Poona as a pilot. The Air Force didn’t appeal to him and soon left for a career in films at Bombay. He is best known for his suave sophisticated roles, which suited his personality. His movie career started with a job as third assistant director to Vishram Bedekar at the studios in Pune. Vishram needed an Afghan who could tie a Pashtun turban on one of his characters. Rehman could do that, being a Pashtun, and that brought him to the screen for some lead roles. One of his major hits as hero was Pyar Ki Jeet with Suraiya, and the song-“Ek Dil Ke Tukde Hazar Hue, Koi Yahan Gira, Koi Wahan Gira ” was a major hit. Badi Behen was another big hit with Suraiya. He was also interested in marrying Suraiya, along with many other suitors, though she was adamant in wanting to marry Dev Anand.
Initially he played lead roles, but as time passed, he accepted supporting roles and made his mark in some hit films like Pyaasa, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (in which he played a debauched zamindar, Chhote Sarkar), and Waqt which were some of his memorable roles, the first two with Guru Dutt, famous actor, producer, director. Rehman also did key roles in Baharon Ki Manzil, Gomti Ke Kinare, Dushman and Holi Aayi Re. Rehman received four Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for Phir Subah Hogi (1958), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).
Rehman had a deep, impressive and powerful voice and it is a great irony that he died of throat cancer, It can easily be said that his colourful role as Chenoy Seth in B.R.Chopra’s 1965 film Waqt was one of his best loved performances. Despite his evil designs for Raaj Kumar in the film, audiences admired his style and prosperous look. He proved the perfect match for” Jaani” Raaj Kumar. The scenes between the two, especially at the swimming pool, are among the highlights of the first multi-starrer of our film industry. Word for word, expression for expression, Rehman stood his own opposite Raaj Kumar who was known for his unique voice, style and dialogue delivery. In fact, Rehman seemed more in control than “Jaani”. How smoothly and politely an evil man can accomplish his goals is what Chenoy Seth shows us in Waqt. Indeed, a memorable performance!
Rehman’s first film was Hum Ek Hain-1946 and in 1982 his last 3 films were released-Dil aakhir dil hain, Rajput and Vakilm Babu. In all Rehman acted in 113 films and lip synched just 17 songs on the screen, in his career.
Not much is known about Rehman’s personal life except that he lived behind Regal Cinema in Colaba area of Bombay and was extremely devoted to his wife. Director Lekh Tandon informs that the tough Rehman married his girlfriend who looked after him when he fell upon lean times during the 1950s. But as she kept him and his confidence afloat, Rehman was perpetually grateful to her for her supreme sacrifice and the devoted couple lived a reclusive life with Guru Dutt, Johnny Walker and Abrar Alvi amongst their few friends from the industry. Perhaps this seclusion from the moviedom’s social circuit explains the near absence of any stories about him or his family. Nevertheless, like Lekh Tandon opines, “he was a rare breed of actor who brought his own sheen and sophistication to a character”, discerning audiences know he was an actor who was worth his weight in gold. Like a rare melody that is little remembered but never forgotten by our heart, Rehman twinkles in our memory.
In 1977, he suffered three heart attacks due to excessive alcohol consumption. He was also a chain smoker and he was diagnosed with throat cancer. A man whose majestic voice was his signature, lost his voice and he was unable to speak during his last days in his life. Rehman died on 5-11-1984.
