In this article, I am taking up the film, ‘Sailaab’ (1990) for the only reason that the chartbuster song from the film which is my all-time favourite dance song of Madhuri Dixit is yet to appear on the Blog. The film would have faded from the memory of the current generation but for this cult dance song. The video of this song which was uploaded only about five years back has already attained 11 million views.
The film was produced by Surender Jain and was directed by Deepak Balraj Vij. The cast included Aditya Pancholi, Madhuri Dixit, Shafi Inamdar, Jamuna, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Om Shivpuri, Suresh Oberoi, Anand Balraj, Shammi, T P Jain, C S Dubey, Leena Kamat, Ranjan, Manju Mishra, Guddu, Vinod Rawat etc. Suresh Oberoi, Anand Balraj (younger brother of director, Deepak Balraj Vij) and Ranjan made their debut with this film. The film belongs to the genre of psychological suspense thriller.
‘Sailaab’ (1990) was a remake of Tamil film, ‘Kan Simittum Nera’ (1988) in which Kathik and Ambika played the lead roles. The story of the film in detail is as under:
A man (Aditya Pancholi) takes a taxi in the night and reaches outside a building in which a girl (Madhuri Dxit) is seen entering the building who stays with an old sick lady, Yashoda (Shammi). He seems to be on a reconnaissance to keep a watch over the girl who has just returned from her hospital duties as a doctor.
After a couple of days, the girl who is Dr. Sushma Malhotra, Psychiatrist along with her hospital colleagues is scheduled to perform a dance to raise the funds for the cancer patients. The same man is also present in a discreet manner during her dance performance. After the end of her dance performance, Dr Sushma goes home. The man follows her. He climbs through the drainage pipe to her house and kills a fully covered Yashoda and escapes. On the way, some goons assuming to be carrying huge cash in his brief case chase him and snatch his brief case during which the man meets with an accident from a speeding car. He lies unconscious and the police admits him in the hospital.
Police Inspector, Ranjit Kapoor (Suresh Oberoi) visits Dr. Sushma’s house for investigation when he comes to know that Yashoda has been staying with her after her discharge from the hospital as she had no one to take care off. Inspector Ranjit also see no motive to kill Yashoda who was an orphan and nothing has been found stolen from the house.
After a week after the death of Yashoda, Dr Sushma joins her hospital duties. Dr Din (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) gives her a new assignment of a patient who has been admitted in the hospital for a week without much progress. The patient happens to be the same person who after killing Yashoda, has met with a car accident and has lost his memory. He does not remember his name.
Over a period of time, the patient to whom Dr Sushma has given a new name, Krishna recovers though his past memories does not return. He has developed affinity towards Dr Sushma, whose instructions he faithfully obeys. Dr Sushma also develops liking for Krishna as an obedient patient. After few days, the hospital authorities shifts Krishna in a rehabilitation centre after he has fully recovered from his injuries as no one has come forward to take his discharge from the hospital. Sushma offers to shelter him in her house until he regains his past memories. Dr Din agrees after consulting Inspector Ranjit.
One day, Inspector Ranjit visits a goon Shaka’s den to enquired about a stolen jewellery during which he finds a brief case with an old photograph of Sushma inside it. Shaka reveals him that he had snatched the brief case from a man after a fight who was running away. There was no cash but only this photograph in the brief case. Inspector Ranjit gets a doubt on Shaka assuming that he may have killed Yashoda and decamped with this brief case. He calls Dr Sushma to the police station for the identification of the brief case. Krishna insists that he would also accompany her to the police station. Dr Sushma says that the brief case does not belong to her.
At the same time in the police station, Shaka is being brought to put him in police lock-up for stealing the jewellery. He identifies Krishna as the man from whose hand he had snatched the brief case. At first, Inspector Ranjit thinks that it is a ploy by Shaka to wood wink him. But when he says that Krishna may be pretending to be suffering from amnesia, Inspector thinks that this could be possible.
After the checking of the case file of the accident and the Yashoda’s murder, both of which has happened in the same midnight, Inspector Ranjit and Hyder Ali think that there could be a link between the murder and the accident. If it comes out to be true, Dr Sushma’s life is in danger. This leads to the clash of jurisdiction between Dr Sushma and Inspector Ranjit over Krishna. Dr Sushma believes that Krishna is her patient and it is her responsibility to take care of him while Inspector Ranjit thinks that with the new development as revealed by Shaka, Krishna will be under his surveillance. Since both have started liking each other, Dr. Sushma and Krishna secretly get married in a temple and depart for their honeymoon in a hill station.
In connection with the death of a photo processing laboratory man, Inspector Ranjit visits the photo laboratory where he gets to see a photograph of Sushma and a man resembling Krishna. This leads him to Monty (Anand Balraj) who is a notorious criminal and a blackmailer. Through Monty’s wife, Inspector Ranjit comes to know that Monty was responsible for breaking the marriage of Rajeev’s sister by using a tricked photo showing Rajeev with Sushma together, to blackmail and break off the marriage of his sister. Naturally, groom’s family breaks off the marriage. Believing her brother backstabbed the family by having an illicit relationship with Sushma, the sister commits suicide.
From the fake photograph, it become clears to Inspector Ranjit that Rajeev is the same person, now known as Krishna, who met with a car accident and lost his memory. Still, it is not clear as to why he would kill Yashoda. Apparently, for the audience, he has killed Yashoda assuming her to be Sushma. Inspector’s visit to Rajeev’s father reveals that grieved by the suicide of his sister, Rajeev decided to take revenge against Sushma and left his house to kill her.
Inspector Ranjit immediately telephone to Dr Sushma in her hotel room in the hill station that the person whom she has given shelter is not Krishna but Rajeev. She reveals him that she has already married Krishna and they are on honeymoon. Inspector Ranjit immediately proceeds to the hill station to keep the surveillance on Krishna/Rajeev. With the police investigation, Monty also now knows that it is better to eliminate Rajeev to prevent him from becoming the witness against him. So, he along with his henchmen proceed to the hill station fully armed.
During the honeymoon, Krishna, while taking a photo of Dr Sushma on a Polaroid camera accidentally falls from the table top rolling down, He sees the photograph of Dr Sushma coming out of the polaroid camera. Dr Sushma reaches near the spot and calls his name. He retorts her not to call him Krishna as his name is Rajeev. Because of his accidental fall, Krishna has got his past memory back. He immediately grabs her by neck and tries to strangulate her. But she gets released only because he was injured. A series of hide and seek between them take them to a discarded factory shed.
By this time Inspector Ranjit, Monty and his henchmen have reached the spot. There is cross firing between Inspector Ranjit and Monty. Inspector Ranjit manages to reach to Rajeev and reveals to him that Monty was responsible for the suicide of his sister. Rajeev recalls the events and kills Monty by snatching his gun. Rajeev surrenders to Inspector Ranjit while Dr Sushma for the first time calls Krishna as Rajeev. However, he says that he will always be Krishna to her. Dr. Sushma promises hiim that she will wait for him after his release from the prison.
The film had four songs written by Javed Akhtar which is set to music by Bappi Lahiri. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘hamko aaj kal hai intezaar’ which is a chartbuster song of the film. It is majorly a chorus song with main playback singer, Anupama Deshpande singing only the refrain lines for Madhuri Dixit. Rest of the 8-minute song is rendered by the male and the female chorus. It is a dance song choreographed by Saroj Khan which is majorly inspired from the folk dances of Koli (fisherman) and Lavani dances of Maharashtra.
The context of the song is that Dr Sushma (Madhuri Dixit) works in a hospital which has arranged a charity dance performance by Dr. Sushma and her hospital colleagues for Cancer Aid Society. Aditya Pancholi (whose character’s name is unknown at this point) who has been stalking Dr Sushma for a couple of days, is discreetly watching her dance performance. After the dance performance, he follows Dr. Sushma until she returns home.
One cannot imagine as to how many brain storming sessions must have taken place between the director, Deepak Balraj, the choreographer, Saroj Khan, the music director, Bappi Lahiri, Lyricist, Javed Akhtar and Madhuri Dixit. In addition, Bappi Lahiri must have had multiple rehearsals with Anupama Deshpande and the chorus singers to bring the dance song to the perfection. The brain storming sessions as well as rehearsals were worth the time spent for attaining the tremendous success of the 8-minute dance song. Madhuri Dixit’s dance performance is graceful, electrifying, magical and mesmerising. Moreover, she gives an impression of performing the dance with ease and enjoying her dance. Just note that Madhuri Dixit lip syncs the refrain of the songs eight times and on each occasion she gives different dance steps, hands movements and expressions perfectly in alignment with the camera angle.
