Today’s post is Prakashchandrajee’s farmaish. He requested me to write a post on the song “tum mere sapnon me aanaa chhodd do“ from the film Madhavi (1969). He had mentioned this song in a comment to the post written by Atuljee on “Actresses whose name begin with the letter D and have lip-synced to Asha Bhosle’s song.“ In this comment he had mentioned the actress Deepa who debuted in this film.
On imdb the role of Madhavi is attributed to the actress Unni Mary, to whom the name Deepa is also attributed. Her birth year is given as 12 March 1962. The film Madhavi was released in 1969, which would make the actress at the most 7 years old in the film. The actress Deepa in the film looks anything but seven. Thus, it must be false attribution. I couldn’t unearth anything more than this about this actress.
Madhavi (1969) is a rather unusual historical costume drama. The film is based on the Marathi play “Punya Prabhav” by R.G. Gadkari. The film stars Sanjay Khan, Padmini and Pran. Deepa is given the credit as “Introducing Deepa as Madhavi”. The producer is B. Radhakrishna. This film is directed by Tapi Chanakya.
The story is set in a historical/fictionalized royal world in which the Chola kingdom and the Chalukya kingdom are at war. The Chola forces eventually defeat the Chalukyas. Among the defeated are Maharaja Rajendra Bhupathi (Murad), ruler of Chalukya, and his warrior daughter Princess Madhavi (Deepa). They are brought to the Chola court as prisoners, in chains.
Madhavi, however, refuses to behave like a defeated captive. She retains her dignity and courage, which immediately impresses several people at the Chola court. One of those impressed by her is Senapati Jai Singh (Sanjay Khan). Jai Singh is an honourable and compassionate military commander. He speaks up on behalf of the defeated king and his daughter.
This makes an important difference: the Chola ruler (Nasir Hussain) decides not to humiliate the defeated enemy. Instead, Rajendra Bhupathi and Madhavi are released from their chains and treated as honoured guests. The two kingdoms move toward reconciliation and a peace treaty.
Once peace has been established, the question of Madhavi’s marriage arises. Her father asks the Chola ruler to help find a suitable husband for her. A tournament is therefore arranged, with the winner to receive Madhavi’s hand in marriage. Among the principal contenders are Jai Singh, Vikram Singh (Pran) and Pratap Singh (Roopesh Kumar). The contest is closely fought between Jai and Vikram. Eventually Jai Singh wins, and he and Madhavi are promised to one another. This is where the film’s central conflict really begins.
Vikram Singh is not merely disappointed romantically; he is consumed by jealousy toward Jai Singh. Vikram therefore devises a plan to have Madhavi kidnapped. He orders his bodyguard Kharag Singh (Mehmood) to abduct her and bring her to him. But the plan goes spectacularly wrong. Kharag Singh kidnaps Mangala (Padmini), the adopted daughter of the Chola ruler, instead of Madhavi.
When Vikram Singh discovers that the woman before him is actually Mangala, he realizes that he is in serious trouble. Rather than admit that he had plotted Madhavi’s abduction, Vikram claims that his actions arose from his love for Mangala. Remarkably, Mangala accepts him, since she herself has feelings for Vikram Singh, and the situation is ultimately transformed from a potential royal scandal into a marriage.
Thus, instead of one royal wedding, there are two. The two marriages are celebrated. The Chola Raja eventually decides to go on a religious pilgrimage, leaving Jai Singh with considerable responsibility at court. The succession is also arranged around Prince Suraj (Master Shahid), who is to become the future ruler.
But Vikram Singh’s ambitions have not disappeared. He may have married Mangala, but his jealousy of Jai and his desire for power remain. Meanwhile, both Madhavi and Mangala become pregnant and eventually give birth to sons.
With the Chola ruler away on pilgrimage, circumstances give Vikram Singh his opportunity. Jai Singh is sent away from the court on an expedition/hunt involving dangerous wild animals. During Jai’s absence, Vikram Singh poisons Prince Suraj and Madhavi is accused of it. She is arrested and thrown into a dark dungeon. When Jai returns and discovers what has happened to his wife, he refuses to accept the accusation. He attempts to defend Madhavi and confront the forces responsible. Jai Singh’s attempt to rescue Madhavi is thwarted. He is captured, and Vikram Singh has him blinded and seizes power and effectively becomes ruler.
Madhavi has lost virtually everything. Her husband is blind, she is imprisoned and her reputation has been destroyed. Now Vikram Singh tells her that she must marry him within 24 hours, otherwise he will kill her son.
Meanwhile, Mangala learns about her husband’s evil intentions and saves the life of Madhavi’s child. At the same time, it is revealed that Jai Singh was not actually blinded and is therefore able to fight Vikram Singh. It appears that Kharag Singh, who had been ordered to blind Jai Singh, did not carry out the order. Mangala, however, has to sacrifice her life in the process and is later hailed as a martyr. Jai Singh and Madhavi are finally reunited and go on to live happily together. The film thus ends with the defeat of Vikram Singh and a triumph of good over evil.
Today’s song is sort of an “open-eyed dream” song. The song is sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi and is filmed on Deepa and Sanjay Khan respectively.
The lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and the music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. With this song, the actress Deepa make her debut as a lipsyncer in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in this blog.

Unni Mary / Deepa is a Malayalam actress who worked in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies, too . Surprisingly, coincidentally, she debuted as a child actress in 1969. Was active till 1992. She was the second heroine in AMARDEEP, 1979 . The one who shares the screen with Rajesh Khanna in the song Na koi tere pehle thi Na koi baad mein hogi……
ZINDAGI JEENE KE LIYE, 1984, must be her only other Hindi movie.
Today’s Deepa must be a one film wonder.

Deepa aka Unni Mary play Rajesh khanna’s sister (Mithun Chakraborty ‘s fiancee in the film) in Amardeep film, and in the above-mentioned song of Amardeep vijaya lalita, Manju Bhargavi, bindu and other junior dancers appear with Rajesh khanna “koi na Tere pehle thi”
