‘Lubna’ (1981) was produced by T. Mohamed Bappu and C.P. Beeran Koya and was directed by Kabeer Rauthar. The cast included Kanwaljeet Singh, Zaheera, Prema Narayan, Murad, M Rajan, Veena, Satyen Kappu, Shobhana, Raza Murad, Amar Kakkad, Lalita Kumari, Sunita, Nazir Kashmiri etc. The film was a Muslim social belonging to the genre of romance drama with a love triangle between Kanwaljeet Singh, Zaheera and Prema Narayan. M Rajan played an important role of Nawab Saab in the film.
M Rajan (Rajan Malhotra) was born in Lahore on 10/10/1929 in a wealthy family. After partition, He along with his elder brother, Roshan Lal Malhotra (R L Malhotra) migrated to India. R L Malhotra produced his first film, ‘Kaale Baadal’ (1951) with Shyam and Meena Shorie in the lead role in which M Rajan debuted as a supporting actor. In his next film, ‘Dhuaan’ (1953), R L Malhotra turned director taking his younger brother in lead role along with Usha Kiran. Thereafter, he was in the lead roles with Anita Guha in ‘Aankh Ka Nasha’ (1956), with Nalini Jaywant in ‘Fifty Fifty’ (1956) and with Meena Kumari in ‘Sahaara’ (1958). Unfortunately, all his films with lead roles flopped.
From 1960 onwards, M Rajan did supporting roles including that of the villain. He was the second lead actor with Dharmendra in ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1961). He was the supporting actor in many films, prominent being a villain in ‘Sehra’ (1963) and ‘Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai’ (1967), as Amitabh Bachchan’s father in ‘Zanjeer’ (1973), Amitabh Bachchan’s friend in ‘Adaalat’ (1976), the sidekick of Vinod Khanna in ‘Inkaar’ (1977) and many more. His career flourished in supporting roles of all types. It is said that he never asked for work as he was also in the business of film financing being from a wealthy family. During his acting career, M Rajan worked in 38 films, with ‘Balidaan’ (1985) being his last film. He was a very private person who kept a low profile even when he was active in Hindi film industry. After his last film, he remained away from the public life to such an extent that his personal life including his marital status remians unknown.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Nawab Saab (M Rajan) belongs to an aristocratic family staying in his palace with his wife (Veena) and a son, Dr. Ayub who works in a hospital as a physician. Zubeida (Prema Narayan) is his colleague in the hospital who is also a doctor and the daughter of his maternal uncle (Murad). Zubeida’s father belongs to an aristocratic family. Because of the social status of both the families, Nawab Saab is keen that his son, Dr. Ayub gets married to Zubeida (Prema Narayan) who is also highly educated. Because of the family relation as well as Zubeida being his colleague in the hospital, they always move together. Nawab Saab discusses the marriage proposal with Kazi (Satyen Kappu) who also seconds his decision on the basis of the family and educational status.
One day, among the many patients waiting for Dr Ayub, Lubna (Zaheera) along with her friend (Sunita) meet him for her medical check-up as she has not been keeping well for last few days. Dr. Ayub is mesmerised by Lubna’s beauty. Lubna is also attracted toward Dr Ayub. In the same evening, Dr Ayub was to accompany Zubeida for a film show in the theatre. Instead, he visits the house of his colleague, Dr. Gangaram (Amar Kakkad) sharing his encounter with Lubna. Dr Gangaram reminds him that Nawab Saab is planning to get him married to Zubeida and it is a good decision on the basis of family status and their profession. However, Dr Ayub says that it will be his personal decision as to whom he will marry in which case the class status are not important for him.
Both Dr. Ayub and Lubna have liked each other but they have not met or talked to each other. Laila (Sunita), Lubna’s close friend arranges meeting with Dr. Ayub to get to know each other during which Dr Ayub proposes to marry Lubna and meets Lubna’s father Kazi to formally take his consent which, at first, he flatly refuses. Dr Ayub reminds him that Lubna is adult and he can take legal recourse to marry her when she is agreeable to marry him. Lubna tells her father that she loves Dr. Ayub and if he does not give his consent, she will sacrifice her love. Kazi melts down and give his consent. Dr. Ayub and Lubna get married. Zubeida attends the wedding reception. Nawab Saab is extremely upset with the marriage and he and his family are absent at the reception. The newly married Dr Ayub and Lubna temporarily shift to his friend, Dr Gangadhar’s house.
After few days, Dr Ayub receives a message from the orderly of Nawab Saab’s palace that his mother is ill. Dr Ayub rushes with Lubna to meet her mother and enquired about the health. During their meeting, she insists that they should live in the palace itself with her assurance that she will convince Nawab Saab. They stay peacefully in the palace but Lubna always gets insulted by Nawab Saab whenever he sees her. However, because Ayub’s mother treats Lubna as her own daughter, she feels that over a period of time, Nawab Saab will mellow down.
After few months, Kazi makes his first visit to Nawab Saab’s palace to see her daughter. But Nawab Saab insults him very badly and asks his orderly to throw him out of his house. Lubna has witness the insulting behaviour of Nawab Saab. She comes out of the palace to see off her father when Nawab Saab closes the main door of the palace. Lubna accompanies her father and stay back with her father. When Dr Ayub returns, his mother repeats the same thing which Nawab Saab has wrongly fed her that Kazi had visited the house who has insulted him. She further points out that Lubna should have waited for his return before she left the palace. Dr Ayub does not know it is real or some misunderstanding. He visits Kazi house to take Lubna back with him to the palace. Fresh with the wound of insults afflicted on him, Kazi refuses to send Lubna with Dr Ayub who gives him 3-day time to decide failing which he will take some unpleasant action.
After three days, a much soften Kazi decides to drop Lubna in the palace and she is happy with his decision. However, it is too late as a letter of triple talaq by Dr Ayub to Lubna is received. Lubna is heart-broken. In the palace, Nawab Saab telephones to Zubeida’s father with a proposal of marriage of Dr Ayub with Zubeida which he declines. Zubeida meets Nawab Saab and Ayub’s mother to emphasis that for the sake of Dr Ayub, they should consider remarriage of Lubna with him as he cannot live without her. Ayub’s mother threatens Nawab Saab that if anything happens to her son, she will kill herself. Finally, Nawab Saab relents giving up his aristocratic standard by visiting Kazi’s house to formally ask for Lubna’s hand for his son. Kazi is extremely happy. But there is a legal itch for the remarriage of Lubna with her former husband, Dr Ayub. To overcome that, Lubna’s Nikkah Halala is performed with Rashid (Raza Murad) with the understanding that he will grant triple talaq to her on the very next day so that she can remarry Dr Ayub.
Next day, it transpires that Rashid is a notorious ruffian, Kallu Miyan who refuses to give triple talaq by saying that no one in his family has given talaq. Lubna says that she has been treated as a trading commodity and now she does not wants to get ‘traded’ further. So, she will go with Kallu Miyan, even though he is a ruffian. But she has been treated by an aristocratic family even worst than a ruffian. So, it does not matter to her. With these words, she goes with Kallu Miyan to proceed to his house.
In the palace, Nawab Saab and his family and relatives are waiting for Lubna to reach for the Nikkah ceremony with Dr Ayub. But soon he comes to know that she had decided to go with Rashid/Kallu Miyan, Nawab Saab commits suicide for his insult in front of his families and friends. Dr Ayub turns alcoholic. He even tries to meet Lubna in her new house but she does not open her door for him. A drunk Dr Ayub drives his car to return home when he meets with a serious accident. He is admitted in the hospital fighting for his life. His last wish is to see Lubna and apologize to her for his wrongdoing. But Lubna refuses to visit the hospital. It is her husband, Kallu Miyan who insists and takes her to the hospital. Dr Ayub stares at her for few seconds and passes away. The film ends with Kallu Miyan consoling Lubna.
The film had six songs written by Nida Fazli (5) and Aish Kanwal (1) which were set to music by Manas Mukherjee. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘mubaarkbaad bismillah’ written by Aish Kanwal. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for both Sunita (my guess on the basis of identifying all the remaining main actresses in the film with their roles) and Lalita Kumari. It is a pre-wedding song composed in qawwali style.
The context of the song is that despite the opposition from Nawab Saab (M Rajan), his son Dr Ayub (Kamaljeet Singh) goes ahead with the Nikkah ceremony with Lubna (Zaheera) after he gets consent from her father, Kazi (Satyen Kappu). Before the Nikkah, Lubna’s close friend, Laila (Sunita) and her mother (Lalita Kumari on the harmonium) sings the pre-wedding song accompanied by girls from Lubna’s relatives and neighbours.
