Today’s song is the last and final song from the crime, action and a social film – Naya Daur-1978.

Made by United Movie Arts, Bombay it was produced by Sudesh Gupta. It was written by Rakesh Kumar and Arjun Dev Rashk. The film was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and the music was by R.D.Burman. Lyricist was Anand Bakshi. There was a long list of actors along with guest artists and special appearance actors. Rishi Kapoor, Bhavna Bhatt, Danny, Madan Puri, Ranjit, Om Prakash, Purnima, Farida Jalal, Paintal and others. Special appearances were by Shri Ram Lagoo, Sapru and Shivraj. The guest artist was Shashi Kiran.

Another film of same name released in 1957-Naya Daur, was the opposite of this new Naya Daur in acting, songs and the cast. In earlier days, the suitability of the actor for the film’s role was one of the main criterion of selection, but later on whether the actor has any hit films behind him was the main consideration of selection. Thus looking at the story, in my opinion, Rishi Kapoor was the wrong choice for this crime film. Rishi had only Romantic films behind him, including his Debut film- Bobby. His appearance, hair style and acting style was not fit for today’s film. No doubt this was the Naya Daur of film making !

1978 was a significant year for the cinema industry for various reasons. The I & B Minister Mr. Advani changed the rules of the Censor Board. he declared that now onwards, the Censor will object only to films not following the Constitutional principles of personal freedom. This meant that the Government, Ministers and the other Govt. employees could be justifiably criticised in a film without Censor Bojection. This was a great freedom bestowed on the filmmakers.

1978 was also called the year of “A” Certificates to films. As many as 18 films out of the 115 films released in the year got the ‘A” certificate. Southern movies like Alinganam, Her Nights, Sexy Dreams, Mann ka Aangan, Rati Nivedanam etc were in the lead.

This year Amitabh Bachchan continued to be the audience attraction and the most viewed actor. His films like Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Ganga ki Saugandh, Trishul and Don excelled at the Box office. Main tulsi tere aangan ki was an unexpected Hit film. Out of the dozens of films directed by Dev Anand, this year Des pardes was successful. Incidentally, this was the last film with Dev Anand as a Hero that was successful.

The success of Chopra’s Pati,Patni aur Woh was a shock to all, so was Rekha’s Ghar. Satyam Shivam Sundaram was not as per expectations. Parallel Cinema like Gaman, Junoon and Arvind Desai ki ajjeb kahani did reasonably well. Cinema Cinema was a novelty. It showed pieces from 200 films, from 1913 to 1978.

National film awards were doubled in cash awards to Rs. 40,000. The number of awards also increased to 64. A Postage stamp was issued on Charlie Chaplin.Pankaj Mullick and Dhiren Ganguly expired in 1978.

On this background let us now take a look at today’s film story…..

The 1978 Hindi film Naya Daur is an action-crime drama directed by Mahesh Bhatt. It stars Rishi Kapoor, Bhavana Bhatt, Danny Denzongpa, and Om Prakash. The movie is entirely distinct from the famous 1957 Dilip Kumar movie of the same name and follows a dark, urban disillusionment storyline.

The story revolves around Mahesh Chopra (played by Rishi Kapoor), a brilliant arts college student with a cherubic smile and big dreams. He lives a comfortable, middle-class life with his mother Shanti and his father, a dedicated government employee, in government quarters in Bombay. During college, Mahesh falls in love with Kiran Mehta (Bhavana Bhatt), the daughter of a wealthy businessman who highly disapproves of their relationship.

After successfully graduating, Mahesh intends to pursue a postgraduate degree. However, the family’s stability shatters when his father retires. They are forced to vacate their government quarters immediately and end up moving into the city slums.

Mahesh enters the harsh job market only to realize that his hard-earned degree is treated as nothing more than a scrap of paper. As unemployment stretches on and his family struggles in poverty, he becomes entirely disillusioned by the traditional values of honesty and hard work that his elders clung to. Desperate and angry, he turns to a life of crime as a quick shortcut to success, riches, and power.

While Mahesh eventually manages to amass a fortune and secure financial success through his criminal endeavors, it comes at a heavy cost. He finds himself trapped in a life with filled coffers but an empty soul, realizing too late that money cannot buy true happiness or peace of mind.

The director Mahesh Bhatt was known for some outstanding films like Saraansh-1984, Naam-1986, Aashiqui-1990 etc. But all such films were from his later part of career. Today’s film Naya Daur-1978 was his only the 3 rd film as a Director- when he was hardly 30 year old. He directed 78 films from 1974 to 2025.

Mahesh Bhatt, born 20 September 1948 is a retired Indian film director, producer and screenwriter known for his works in Hindi cinema. Known for his unconventional narratives and exploration of bold themes, he was one of the most prominent filmmakers in 80s and 90s Hindi cinema. He has received a number of accolades, including five National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards. A notable film from his earlier period is Saaransh (1984), screened at the 14th Moscow International Film Festival. It became India’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for that year. The 1986 film Naam was his first piece of commercial cinema. In 1987, he turned producer with the film Kabzaa under the banner, Vishesh Films, with his younger brother Mukesh Bhatt. In 2013, he was inducted into the Bollywood Walk of Fame, at Bandra Bandstand, where his hand print was preserved.

The son of director Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Bano, he went on to become one of the most recognized directors of the Indian film industry in the next decade, giving both art-house works such as Daddy (1989) and Swayam (1991), as well as commercial romantic hits, such as Aashiqui (1990) and Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), in which he cast Pooja Bhatt with actor Aamir Khan. He next directed Sadak (1991) which was a hit and it remains his highest grossing either directed or produced by Vishesh Films.

Bhatt was born to Nanabhai Bhatt and his consort Shirin Mohammad Ali. Bhatt’s father was a Gujarati Hindu Nagar Brahmin and his mother was a Gujarati Muslim.

Among his siblings is the Indian film producer Mukesh Bhatt. Bhatt did his schooling from Don Bosco High School, Matunga. While still in school, Bhatt started summer jobs to earn money, while also making product advertisements. He was introduced to film director Raj Khosla through acquaintances. Bhatt thus started as an assistant director to Khosla.

At the age of 26, Bhatt made his debut as a director with the film Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain starring Kabir Bedi and Prema Narayan in 1974. His 1979 Lahu Ke Do Rang, starring Shabana Azmi and Vinod Khanna in lead roles, won two Filmfare Awards in 1980: Helen received her first Filmfare as Best Supporting Actress and Madhukar Shinde won it for Best Art Direction. The film did “above average” at the box office. He was noticed and received great critical acclaim with art film Arth (1982), when he turned to his personal life for inspiration but doubt persists as to whether it is an original film.

Later, he made many more films taking insights from his personal life wherein he highlighted personal narratives ranging from out-of-wedlock birth to extramarital affair, and created critically acclaimed works such as Janam (1985) and Saaransh (1984), an exploration of an old couple’s anxieties in a universe governed by arbitrary violence. Chander Uday Singh of India Today wrote, “Although Bhatt has used artists with little cinematic experience (barring Hattangady and Phule) he draws superb performances from them. Kher stops short of being brilliant only because he occasionally lapses into a vigour out of keeping with the ageing and broken Pradhan. Hattangady, fresh from the success of Gandhi, remains convincing in the difficult role of Parvati.”

In a retrospective review on films 30th anniversary in 2014, Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com wrote, “Bhatt’s finest film, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on May 25, isn’t a comfortable cinema. Devoid of cheer and falsehoods, Saaransh is armed with a leading man like Anupam Kher who single-handedly enriches its story into an experience so personal, poignant and profound, only the callous can stay unmoved.”

Bhatt is co-owner of the film production house, Vishesh Films, with his brother, Mukesh Bhatt. However, owing to differences between the brothers, Mukesh Bhatt took over Vishesh films and in May 2021, it was publicly announced that Mahesh Bhatt was no longer associated with the firm. He is a member of the advisory board of U.S. nonprofit TeachAids.

He has hosted some episodes of two science magazine programmes – Turning Point and Imaging Science on Doordarshan in the 1990s. As of December 2018 Bhatt was a member of the Board of Patrons of the Mother Teresa Awards.

Here is the last and final song from the film Naya Daur-1978, sung by Kishore Kumar and Danny. It makes the film YIPPEED !
