Today’s song is the last and final song from a Psychoanalytical cum Social film- Yauwan-1973.
The film was made by N.P.International, Bombay, by its owner, the Producer N.P.Singh. The film was directed by Ranjan Bose, who also wrote the story and its screenplay. Dialogues were by Madan Joshi. The music was by Sonik-Omi pair. The cast included Anil Dhavan, Yogita Bali, Sujit Kumar, Sunder, Mohan Choti, Janki Das, Purnima, Sajjan and many others including Kabir Bedi in a special role.
Such types of psychoanalytic social film stories are best suited for the ‘New Wave’ films and not for mainstream films. This is because the type of audience is totally different for these two world-apart types of films. Otherwise, it is like Idli Sambar with Butter Chicken and Shrikhand ! In addition, handling such stories needs a different skill. The songs too were very ordinary. The musical scene in 1973 was something different.
The busiest MDs in 1973 were S.D.Burman. R.D.Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant – Pyarelal. Sachin da gave films like Abhimaan, Jugnu,Fagun, Chhupa Rustom, Yeh Gulistan hamara etc. K-A films were Zanjeer, Victoria No 203, Banarasi Babu and Black mail. RDB was his best in Yaadon ki baarat, Namak haram, Anamika, Zeel ke uss paar, Aa gale lag jaa, Raja Rani etc. L-P brought out good, hit songs in films Bobby, Daag and Loafer. Their best film was Bobby. After a long time, Raj Kapoor had entrusted music of his films to someone other than S-J and L-P came winners in that trust !
Bobby also became the Launching pad for Debut spot for 3 artists. Singers Shailendra Singh and Narendra Chanchal and Lyricist Vithalbhai Patel. All of them shared the success of Bobby. Lyricist Maya Govind debuted with Jalte Badan.
Madan Mohan’s Hanste jakhm, Jaidev’s prem prbat, Kanu Roy’s Avishkar and Ravi’s Dhund also had good songs. Saudagar by the Blind MD Ravindra jain did very well with its songs. K.C.Dey, Sonik in Sonik-Omi duo and Ravindra jain were the 3 Blind MDs. K.C.Dey was also an excellent singer and he taught Manna Dey singing.
National film awards went to Lata and SDB. FilmFare chose SDB,Gulshan Bawra, Narendra Chanchal and Asha Bhosle. 5 songs from Samjhauta, Anamika, Victoria No.203, Bobby and Zanjeer were Binaca’s Top 5 songs. Musician Bhagatram (Husnlal’s partner) and Kamal Dasgupta expired in 1973.
Here is the story of the film Yauwan-1973….
Shashi (Yogita Bali) has returned home after her release from the mental hospital. She was suffering from depression on account of something that had happened in her life when she was a teenager. She gets a temporary relapse of depression and faints whenever she sees rose flowers and lightning in the sky or even the disco lighting in the club. Her mother (Purnima) tells others in the house that as per the doctor’s advice, Shashi should not be reminded of her past illness and she should be kept in good humour. Gyani (Mohan Choti) with his wits and repartees entertains Shashi and keeps her mind diverted from her past.
As a means of diversion, Gyani takes Shashi to meet her friends in the club. But except offering formal courtesy, she avoids socialising with them. Gyani introduces Shashi to Club’s Secretary, Roop (Sujit Kumar) who falls in love with her at the first sight. Gyani cautions him that Shashi is a different type of a girl whom he cannot bring her under his spell. He accepts Gyani’s challenge.
One day, Roop suggests to Shashi that she should give her singing performance in the club. She refuses by saying that she has lost touch with her singing. Somehow Roop convinces Shashi’s mother the importance of her participation in the club’s programme and she in turn convinces Shashi to give her the singing performance. After the completion of her singing performances, Shashi is in her green room when she suddenly feels that there is a storm outside. She falls unconscious. She is admitted in a nursing home under the care of Dr. Prem (Anil Dhawan), a psychiatrist. He wants to give her counselling before she is discharged. But Shashi refuses to cooperate by telling him that she is alright and leaves her room.
Prem feels that Shashi needs urgent counselling. So, he decides to pursue her in a different manner. He meets her in the club as if he has come on a casual visit. But each time he meets her he fails to initiate conversation with her on her problems which she is unable to explain. Roop on the other hand continues to pursue Shashi but she does not allow him to take any liberty with her. With constant meetings with Dr. Prem, Shashi has developed a liking for him.
Dr. Prem has a girlfriend, Reeta (Ashoo), who believes in the maxim ‘enjoy the life with friends but finally marry a right person’ and she has already decided that Dr Prem is a right choice for her. At Reeta’s birthday party at a hotel, Dr Prem goes to wish her, with a bouquet. But he finds her in a room with one of her boyfriends in an intimate way. Arguments erupt between them on her behaviour particularly when they are going to marry. Shashi has come to meet Dr Prem to reveal to him that she is in love with him. However, after hearing the conversations between Prem and Reeta, she believes that Dr. Prem has already decided on his life partner. She is in a sombre mood and decides to return home without meeting Dr Prem.
While Shashi is returning home, Roop meets her on the way and tells her that he has decided to marry her. Shashi says that she would require time to think it over. He tells her to meet later in the evening when she can tell about her decision. At home, Shashi reveals to her mother about Roop’s marriage proposal. Mother is happy that at least somebody is ready to marry her daughter.
Shashi meets Roop in the evening and tells him that before he agrees to marry her, he should read the note which she has written about her past events which led to her depression. Roop reads the note and sees an opportunity to sexually exploit her instead of marrying her, by blackmailing her with her secrets. He attempts to molest her when Shashi draws a revolver from her purse and fires at him. Roop falls on the ground. In panic, Shashi runs away and reaches home. She tells the police who have come for investigation that she has killed Roop. She has a relapse of severe depression. Her mother calls Dr Prem. Shashi is admitted to a hospital. Police have come to arrest her. But due to her mental health, she is not arrested but she is kept under police watch in the hospital.
One day, Shashi runs away from the hospital to commit suicide. However, with Dr Prem reaching in time, Shashi is saved. While returning with him, she sees a bunch of rose flower plants. She starts behaving irrationally. After controlling her, Dr Prem insists on her to reveal her past which he feels is the root cause of her depression. He tells her that whatever may be her past secrets, if she shares with him, it will greatly help her to recover from the periodic relapse of depression. He also reveals to her that he is in love with her and he has decided to marry her irrespective of her past secrets. She starts narrating her past secrets.
She was brought up in a liberal atmosphere. So, as a teenager, she often visited night clubs and spent time with her boyfriends. Her gardener, (Kabir Bedi) used to offer her fresh rose flowers from their garden every day. Slowly, she started getting infatuated with him, which led to affairs with him. She inwardly felt guilty of submitting herself to him. One day, Gardner was showing his inclination to meet in her room when there was a storm with thunder and lightning. But she did not respond positively. Soon, a huge tree fell on him killing the Gardner instantly. Because of these incidents, she developed a guilty consciousness which resulted in her going into depression.
Having revealed her secret past, Shashi feels comfortable. But soon she receives a telephone call asking her to come with money failing which the caller would reveal her secrets. But she has already revealed her past secret and now she is not worried. But Dr Prem tells her to follow the caller to know who the person is. When they reach the given address, the caller is none other than Roop. Actually, when Shashi had fired the shot at him, the bullet did not hit him but he acted as dead to avoid her further shot at him. After a long fight between Dr Prem and Roop, a police team arrives and arrests Roop. Shashi begins her new inning with Dr Prem without the burden of her past secrets.( Thanks to Sadanand Kamath ji).
Let us now talk about the Music Director team- Sonik-Omi. Manoharlal Sonik of this team was a blind person. In Hindi films, so far there were only 3 Blind music directors and all were singers too ! The first was K.C.Dey from old times, then there was Ravindra Jain and lastly Manoharlal Sonik with his nephew Omi as Sonik-Omi.
Master Sonik aka Manohar lal Sonik was born on 26-11-1926 in Sialkot, Punjab.By his third year, he lost his vision completely. Undaunted, he learnt music-first from the Music school of Lahore and then from Lucknow. For sometime, he was assistant to pt. Amarnath Batish. After Partition he joined Delhi A.I.R.
Manoharlal Sonic had come to Bombay to become a singer and not MD. He claimed in an interview that he sang for Naushad,Husnlal Bhagatram and Shyamsundar and Harbans(son of Pt.Amarnath Batish). In the film Bazar there was a song- Nazar se mil hi jaayegi- sung by M L Sonik,as per his claim. This song, however, was removed from the film, according to HFGK.
Later, he sang 8 songs in 7 Hindi films, namely Chaar Din-49, Stage-51,Kashmir-51, Khaibar-54, Mast Qalandar-55, Inquilab and then after 20 years he sang in film Umar qaid-75 also. He gave music to film Ishwar Bhakti-51 along with Giridhar, then film Mamta-52, with Hansraj Behl and to film Mehfil-57 with Nashaad.
His nephew Omprakash Sonik came from Delhi to Bombay in August 1954. He joined his uncle. They stayed in a place which was 7 miles away from Thane. They spent the next 4 years in utter poverty and struggle, travelling mostly without a ticket to Bombay in search of work, having only 2 pairs of clothes to use.
In 1959,Madan Mohan took Manoharlal Soni as his assistant and arranger.Omi joined Roshan as assistant. He assisted Roshan in films like Taj Mahal,Barsat ki Raat,Arati etc upto Dil hi to hai.
Meanwhile, due to his excellent work SD Burman,Roshan and Bipin-Babul also used the services of Manoharlal.
Omi and Manoharlal then worked for Madan Mohan and Roshan together as a team.
Meanwhile, his nephew Omprakash Sonik, who was once a singer in Delhi A.I.R., proposed working as a team of composers. They got their first film ” Dil ne phir yaad kiya”-66. The songs became popular. They continued to give music to 105 films and composed 536 songs, till Anadi Dada-93.
After they became reasonably successful, Omi once said in one interview that most of the songs of Madan Mohan were composed by them.
Sanjeev kohli – Madan Mohan’s son, gave another interview challenging them to prove it and asked them why they did not give even a single memorable song when they operated independently… Omi withdrew his comment and apologised.
Master Sonik died on 9-7-1993 and Omi died on 7-7-2016.
Here is the last and final song from this film, sung by Asha Bhosle. This makes the film YIPPEED !
